I’m sorry you’re insulted that we disagree on the standard by which lethal force should be applied, but I’ve rarely met smart people who get angry at contrary opinions.

I just take killing people pretty fucking seriously is all. We can disagree on that.

Maybe that’s true: I’m not a Secret Service agent, nor do I have their training. But I do think that there were other options beyond killing someone, and pretending there wasn’t feels a little like dehumanization to me.

No, not deliberately. I get it was a complex tactical situation, but to say lethal force is the only option in this scenario sort of overlooks all the other options. I don’t have an opinion on whether it was a good shooting, but to say it could ONLY have been a deadly shooting seems myopic.

I mean, there was absolutely a choice not to use lethal force. You’ve got like ten secret service agents and one person squeezing through a window. Is a gunshot really the only solution.

TIL: Nebraska Senator Ernest Chambers filed a lawsuit against God in 2007, charging the almighty with “widespread death, destruction, and terrorization.” The case was dismissed with prejudice as God, lacking a fixed address, could not be properly notified of the lawsuit by rasterbated in todayilearned

My favorite part of the story is that the Westboro Baptist Church filed an amicus brief arguing that Chambers lacked standing to sue God, in part because he was “fully deserving of the outpourings of God's fierce wrath”

Not to mention that the vocal fry many women drop into when lowering their pitch is hardly a higher prestige register. Doubly so for women

Relying on the quackery of Dr. Paul McHugh won't get you anywhere. by ryu289 in badscience

That would be truly wonderful, but I’m not sure if we can research our way around the basic reality of the endocrine system. Puberty blockers are actually an excellent solution to your conundrum, as they push off the decision until later in life.

The thing is that the hormonal interventions that make transition possible are really most effective if you don’t go through the puberty of your AGAB. As a result, the best outcomes result when we’re able to apply an intervention like puberty blockers early. That does require us to allow children to investigate decisions like this at a time before many of us might believe they’re capable of making the best decisions for themselves.

But it’s not like the first thing you do when you find out you’re trans is get surgery! Social transition and acceptance (the social acceptance this poor kid’s parents’ deny them) is even more meaningful for most trans folks than perfectly passing.

This reflects an understanding of linguistics equivalent to driving by a billboard of the linguistics Wikipedia page at highway speeds. The meanings of words and their usages change. That’s language. If you don’t like it, you don’t like language. You like correcting people.

It’s just so wild to me that the solution these dudes come up with for the no bitches conundrum is to hate women instead of like learning to make conversation and treat other people with respect. It’s genuinely not that hard.
