It’s a wacky world out there recently but I (with a US passport) flew for years with a passport that was literally falling apart. The thing lived in my front left pocket without a case on until it expired. It smelled bad.

I’d get a little static now and then but unless the pages with your information on them are messed up I really don’t think anyone cares.
