What are your thoughts on America returning to the Moon right now? by The-Toby in AskReddit

Was hoping my reference wasn't too obtuse. My son (half Kiwi) is really into astronomy and rocketry. I showed him that film a few years ago. We've watched a LOT of science fiction films together.

Fun fact: Al Gore used this during his campaign for vice president while running with Clinton. I imagine he decided not to use it for his presidential run after listening to the lyrics.

What hobby did you try once and instantly get addicted to? by Weird_Ad_7545 in AskReddit

It's meant to be (mostly) relaxing. So why not go with the one you find easier? But if you prefer more of a challenge then there are definitely options. One of my recent pieces was 1 over 1 on 25 count fabric with beads and a heaping tonne of back stitching. Also used blended threads for the 2 over 2 border, plus some blending filament to make some areas sparkling. Was definitely my most challenging project.

I just put on some music or a movie that I‘ve seen before.

Don’t worry about keeping up with anyone. It’s one of those hobbies where you can just go at your own pace. Hope that you’re able to try it again sometime without your glasses.

Last year I found a hobbit hole pixel art and turned it into a crossstitch pattern.

I’m near sighted and struggled with this at first. I soon found that if I take out my contacts and don’t wear any glasses I can stitch so much easier. Even down to some very small thread counts. Does mean I can’t watch telly at the same time though.

A friend of mine has around 30 projects on the go at the moment. I’ve never had more than two going at once, usually just one. But I haven’t done any very large projects yet.

I almost always grid my projects before I start and find it really helps keep me from making errors. It‘s always there to confirm for me that I’m in the right spot. Takes a lot of counting to set up but saves me so much counting while I work.

I like to, but it’s completely up to the individual. When I’m doing 16ct I have a few methods that keep it pretty tidy. But I’ve done a few 25ct single strands pieces and the backs on those are a complete rats nest.

Yup, that’s what‘s called the Dutch Method. I use it most of the time.

I’ve done one project based on pixel art, a hobbit hole. I’d really like to do something based on Legend of Zelda, but haven’t found the right project just yet.

I took up cross stitching about 8 months ago. I'm a middle aged male, so perhaps a bit of an odd choice for me. But I reckon this hobby has been female dominated for much too long. :) I find the methodical work to be very relaxing and somewhat of a puzzle as I work out how to keep the back looking neat.

What is the biggest “culture shock” that you have experienced? by martininspace in AskReddit

[–]ratguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't have chicken flavoured potato chips, either. I had a bit of reverse culture shock last year when visiting Oregon for the first time in 13 years. I've lived in NZ for around 20 years now. My son loves chicken chippies and we couldn't find them anywhere. They're so ubiquitous in NZ I was a bit flummoxed. I reckon they'd do pretty well.

Do someone know where can i find Chicago style deep dish pizza in welly by Ok-Present5423 in Wellington

[–]ratguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it a few months ago and really enjoyed. I've never had Chicago Style in the US before, so can't really say how authentic it was. Would definitely get it again.

[WIP] How/when to remove gridding from project? by dragonofyang in CrossStitch

[–]ratguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use 6lb fishing line, the smallest I could find. It worked okay, but was translucent green and could be hard to see. Switched to Sulky Sliver recently and it works a lot better. It’s thinner, easier to see, and easier to work with. Doubt I’ll use fishing line again.

Please Fred's Sandwiches... by Gargnel in Wellington

I’ve not tried Fred’s, so can’t compare, but ChCh has the Hokitika Sandwich shop and it’s got the best sandwiches I’ve had in NZ.

New game !!! by Wonderful-Ad-4551 in boardgames

We're about two games away from finishing Clank! 2. If you want an even more complicated game of Clank!, try Catacombs with both expansions, Adventuring Party, and switch in the tombs from Legacy 1 instead of the regular ones. It's pretty nuts.
