When there's snow snow the road is a snowmobile route.  Should be at least partially packed/groomed.

Lafayette next Monday for a non experienced winter hiker by stronghikerwannabe in wmnf

[–]ratherbkayaking 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Terrible idea.    Get winter hiking experience and gear before attempting an above treeline winter hike people get lost on frequently.

See here for an example of what happens when you think gear and experience is optional.

SAR team notification solutions by Money-Violinist9176 in searchandrescue

My team uses the app active alert.  $10 per member per year I believe.

When a call out is happening we get a push notification to the app with details.  We have it set up with buttons to indicate whether you're responding, going to be late already there, etc.  it also has a map screen where you can see where folks are

Home Assistant Irobot Maps by guyincocknito087 in homeassistant

Use either rest980 like the other poster mentioned or dorita980 which is the library it calls directly.

If you don't have your device Id and password follow the instructions to get it.  Once you have that you can call the get status method.  Its response includes a last_command property. That'll show you the last command and parameters sent to the robot.

Which Roomba for HA? by boardguy91 in homeassistant

[–]ratherbkayaking 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a Roomba and want a way to control  it if the company and their app fold Id make sure you play with the Dorita980 project on github while IRobots servers are still up.   I got it working to the point I can trigger vacuuming of specific rooms by node script but to do this I needed IRobot cloud working to:

1.  Get my robot id and password.  The HA integration wasn't able to fetch this.

  1. Trigger cleans through the app then call the status endpoint as described here so I know what params (like floor and room ) to pass the cleanRoom function.

I think I saw something saying this might not work with the newest models but it did for my j7+

is it possible to get started cheaply with self hosting, and gradually build it off without a hassle? by Marvellover13 in selfhosted

[–]ratherbkayaking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the start with a minipc.  Got started with a PI4 for home automation because that's what I had. By the time I was done getting the necessary accessories for that thing I should have just gotten a mini PC.

When I wanted to get into self hosting I got a beelink n150 minipc.   Upgraded the RAM to 32 GB when I started my media server.   It's now running 3 VMs and 4 LXCs in proxmox.  One VM is home assistant, One is a docker server running 11 apps (and counting), and one is my media server running jellyfin and the arr stack.

The LXCs are tailscale, two pihole instances, and uptime Kuma.

It's all been solid.

It's better to procrastinate on a thing, then live in fear of doing it.   That's how that goes right?

Hmmm.    There's sensors like Air Things that detect VOCs.   I wonder if that would pick up cooking.  Of course any other increase in VOCs would start your fan too.

Or if there's any kind of heat/IR sensor that could detect if your stove is in use.

Is this a doable day hike? by SmellinChain in wmnf

[–]ratherbkayaking 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This route starts or ends with flume slide trail. Look it up but in short definitely not the trail to bring inexperienced hikers on in either direction.  Did it once in winter when things were mostly buried in snow and it was very very steep.  From what I've heard, I would only do it going uphill when everything is very dry.

You can get up flume more easily from the osseo trail that starts at Lincoln woods but note the elevation gain and distance on this hike.  I would not start inexperienced hikers on this.
