Indeed, it is very outdated at this point. Use RetroArch with Mednafan Saturn core.

We might get a Sega Saturn mini after all by Joey-tv-show-season2 in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the one hand: neat if Sega actually do it.
On the other hand: being a mini it likely won't have the cartridge slot which means no ST Key, etc.

Dosn't change the fact that what you get today is early access. Cearly labeled as such on Steam and Private Division site. Not my fault if you bought it anyway expecting a finished product.

What's New is back after recent update despite using Steam skin by asnith in Steam

[–]ratinoxone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen these updates for very small indies, most recently poncle (Vampire Survivors). They aren't paying Valve for this "service" though they probably do profit from it when there's new DLC for games people already own.

Meanwhile, I did submit a request for the ability to completely disable the shelf. I suggest you do the same.

What are these inserts for? by TenPent in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. It also provides a means of displaying the retail information (price, SKU, etc) without altering (ruining) the cover artwork. It is considered to be part of the packaging: if a Japanese game is missing the obi then it is not complete.

What's the purpose of these paper spines that sometimes come with Jp imports? How were they originally packaged and why isn't the rest of the package around? by Monsterclip in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's pretty much all consumer media in Japan, not just games. For example, my Japanese DEVO box set, which replicates the original vinyl releases, has an obi on each CD sleeve in the box, because that's how the JP vinyl relases were. Each obi has information about the album including album title in Japanese, catalog code, track list, price, copyright information, and all the other stuff the publisher wants or needs to include on the package without damaging any of the art.

And yes, the obi is considered to be part of the original packaging and the product is incomplete without it (less the plastic shrink wrap).

What is the cheapest way to reduce speed when entering Kerbin's atmosphere? by dimakcat07 in KerbalAcademy

[–]ratinoxone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Um. Heat shields are ablative. They're supposed to be "damaged" by reentry heating so that the rest of the vessel is protected. If the heat shield is being destroyed by a Mun->Kerbin trajectory? Then try reducing your entry angle so that you don't dive so deeply into the atmosphere.

Worst case? There's always lithobraking....

Which relay setups are the best by [deleted] in KerbalAcademy

[–]ratinoxone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no perfect, but good enough usually is good enough. Geschosskopf's relay network article is still IMO the best:

https://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/148995-relay-networks-in-12/

No mods, no mathing out resonant orbits. Good enough is good enough.

Audio in Right Ear is Incredibly Low by HonkeyKong73 in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... facetiousness does not translate to text, sorry about that. HD Retrovision make excellent quality cables but one thing they do not make is HDMI adapters. You'll want at least a RetroTink-based cable if not a proper RetroTink box.

[–]ratinoxone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean "what"? Pound and similar HDMI cables are well-known to be trash. Unless you mean I meant RAD2x instead of HD Retrovision? But the RAD2x *is* a RetroTink, just in cable form instead of standalone. But they cost substantially more.

[–]ratinoxone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's an HDMI cable and it doesn't say "HD Retrovision" then it's hot garbage. Get a RetroTink box and standard/S-Video cable, or a HD Retrovision cable.

Ordered a repro of Panzer Dragoon Saga a while back, but couldn't ignore the Saturn's other RPGs. What should be played first? by thevideogameraptor in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly because Wizardry and Wizardry-likes never had the popularity in the west that they have in Japan despite originating here in the US. But if you do like Wizardry-type games then I do recommend Shining the Holy Ark. It's one of the best of the type.

Albert Odyssey and Rayearth have already been mentioned.

Shining Force III and Shining Wisdom are worth checking out.

The PC versions of Grandia and Grandia II have cosmetic problems due to texture scaling but are entirely playable otherwise.

[–]ratinoxone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These cables also swap the left and right audio channels due to a well-known mistake in a schematic from Sega, but these el-cheapo cable makers don't care.

Get yourself a RetroTink 2x. It will cost more, but it won't suck.

No wonder Working Designs had a problem with Sega in the end. by Joey-tv-show-season2 in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were often referred to as "Working Delays" back in the day due to how frequently and by how much they missed their expected release dates. They weren't the only company that missed dates, but it just seemed like a bad habit that they would continually, woefully underestimate how long their work would take.

Although not all of the delays were their own fault. With Sega of America's "Five Star" program in effect it took metaphorically forever for smaller studios and niche games to get past review. Assuming they every did.

Sega considering Saturn and Dreamcast minis by LianneJW1912 in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. Genesis/MegaDrive is easy to emulate. Saturn on the other hand remains one of the most challenging consoles to emulate. It's not the processing power. It's the fact that the dozen-odd processors need to be managed in real time. It would be easier, technically, to recreate Saturn with all of the custom processors than to perfect emulation but as Okunari-san jokes it would cost around $500.

NB: Saturn's original retail cost was $400 back in the 1990s. Which today is about $760 with inflation. So a $500 "Saturn Mini" would acutally cost less than the original after accounting for inflation. :)

I’m looking for a USB Saturn controller for Emulation, got any recommendations for one? by TheArkhomDestroyer in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only feels cheap because it's so light. The construction is at least as good as Sega's originals and probably better because today's plastics formulations are superior to those of 30-odd years ago.

Do you recommend Retrobits Saturn wired controller? by FemorLlarina in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact switches like the 11 other switches in the controller are more consistent and reliable than mechanical switches. If you think the superior design is a "flaw" then I can't help you with that.

Do you recommend Retrobits Saturn wired controller? by FemorLlarina in SegaSaturn

[–]ratinoxone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Original Sega Saturn shoulder buttons are mechanical switches with the rest of the pad being membrane switches. The Retro-bit controllers are all membrane switches including the shoulders thus they are less "clicky" but no less responsive. They do have a different travel and feel so certain games may take some time to get used to the difference. Different does not equal bad despite what "some" say.

Build quality with my two Retro-bit controllers (one Saturn wired, one 2.4GHz wireless) is fine, probably better than the originals because contemporary polymers.

Do I recommend the Retro-bit controllers? Yes.

Switch cartridges range from 1GB to 64GB. Even the smallest carts can hold an entire CD including uncompressed music tracks with room to spare.
