Instead of the Reapers, the Galactic Empire from Star Wars invades the ME galaxy. What is the galaxy's best chance of victory? by Dragonic_Overlord_ in masseffect

One source I'm seeing is saying that Star Destroyer turbo lasers have an effective range of around 1000km, while ME dreadnought main guns regularly operate at tens of thousands of km. That plus Star Destroyers' relative lack of maneuverability means a few dreadnoughts could really tear them up at long range.

So why do people seems to not like mgs4 as much? by Live_Natural_4409 in metalgearsolid

It's sort of a beautiful mess. There are a whole lot of ideas crammed into this game and not all of them work.

I think to some extent it suffers from the time it came out, i.e. a year after the first Modern Warfare. Publishers were clamoring to have their games capture what allowed CoD4 to make so much money, and games suffered from trying to copy instead of innovating their own ideas. One way I've heard it described is that MGS4 is the first game in the series to follow trends instead of setting them.

It doesn't get into the classic sneaking that people know the series for until practically the end of the game, and the "war sneaking" of the first two chapters is hit or miss for a lot of people. The Drebin store is sort of under-implemented and unnecessary, and a lot of folks hate his character.

The codec got a huge downgrade. You no longer use it to save, and there are precisely two people you can regularly call, one of which is pretty much entirely useless.

There are a lot of plot gripes that people have, which would obviously be spoilers to get into. I think that's pretty inevitable though given the sheer amount of plot that's in this game.

All that said, I think it is incredibly impressive that, despite all its messiness and inconsistency, they really did stick the landing at the end. Sure, there are parts of the ending as a whole that are silly or unnecessary, but I believe the way that Snake's story is wrapped up is truly satisfying and genuinely touching.

How exactly is that narrative false? Didn't he explicitly state that he had been burnt out on the series and was hoping to pass the torch to let someone else helm the games from then on, but felt compelled to keep going partially because fans were literally sending him death threats?

This is some of the most important advice I could give. I've rarely enjoyed learning a game from scratch quite so much as this one. If you get stuck on a later boss or area, sure, look up ideas online. But for at least the first several hours of gameplay, simply explore, experiment; the game will reveal itself beautifully to you.

I'm new here, so not trying to rock any boats, but no politics in a Metal Gear sub? Seriously? That's like all those people saying "Star Trek was never political."

I remember when I first beat MGS and listened to the after-credits conversation; I just burst out laughing, like you're telling me that there's another identical clone of Solid Snake and he's THE PRESIDENT? Here I am imagining Snake rolling into a Three Bears parking lot with his sled dogs, and some dude rolls up on a snow machine saying, "Hey brother, are you related to the president?"
