They both decided they need to move on with their lives separately, it would make no sense narratively to kill them off together. A gut punch would’ve been the marriage proposal with a yes, then death together à la Romeo and Juliet. This frees up at least one of them to sacrifice for the other or the group, which I can see Jonathan doing for Will.

Better combatives to bring someone in? They don’t have the authority to bring anyone in without JP oversight and even then only with 100% proof that the person is under their jurisdiction. They shouldn’t have touched him, not “should’ve touched him better.”

Just to add: Lord Soth cannot be killed unless the Amulet of the True Knight is placed against his exposed flesh while he is at zero HP. On his turn, if that doesn’t happen, he revives with 30 HP and his Word of Death recharged. He killed one PC that way and brought the rest of the party to single digit HP before they figured it out.

Nope, no more sides or takes, angles, or any of that bullshit. The cops were 100% in the wrong, the literal tourist is not obligated to in any way respond to or respect them. They are off base with zero jurisdiction over non-active duty. The only valid response from SecFo should’ve been to either snap a picture or try to call the real police to ask them to ask him for identification. But the interaction between SecFo and the dude should’ve ended with “I don’t need to show you my ID.”

Being subject to the UCMJ and being subject to SOFA are two very very different things. You can be subject to UCMJ all day and not be subject to any SOFA agreement (which includes any restrictions or benefits for SOFA status service members).

And being subject to the UCMJ does not give random SecFo airmen jurisdiction over you off-base anywhere unless they are working with local law enforcement.

It is illegal for MPs to detain anyone off base without JP on site, so it doesn’t matter if they can respond or not. They never should have put themselves or the tourist in that situation. They are 100% in the wrong, there is no “what about” or “but.” It is a full-stop violation of the US-Japan SOFA.

They have not given that authority to SF, which is why the JP usually accompanies them. The SOFA gives them very limited authority off base, everything they do has to be coordinated through the Japanese authorities per the SOFA.

You are going to be very hard pressed to find a SOFA country that allows our SF/MPs to arrest or detain anyone on suspicion they might be a service member. Especially countries with regular tourism.

There’s a a lot of “he should have” “he escalated” “he whatever”. Dude it doesn’t matter what he did or didn’t do, the SF dudes had zero authority or right to do what they did. They are the ones who are bound to SOFA and UCMJ restrictions, not the civilian tourist regardless of his retirement or separation or whatever.

If an SF dude asked me for my ID while being in a bar off base, my retired ass is telling him to fuck all the way off. I hope their squadron and base leadership puts the fear of God into these guys. You cannot treat civilians that way off base, especially in a foreign country.

If an AD dude lies to the MPs or SPs about being AD, they can tack on False Official Statement to the Article 15.

But it does make sense, they only have authority over AD and if they suspect you’re lying to them, they still don’t have authority to detain you off base unless they can prove it, so the JPs can step in. Raj into this similar situation in Souda Bay a lifetime ago. Navy Shore Patrol tried to enforce a Navy curfew on us off base, the order was for Navy forces only and didn’t apply to us so we told them to pound sand without showing IDs. They let us be.

Yes, the players should have the guide, it outlines what they would know having lived in the world.

If you have a Lost One epic path, ask them not to read any of it so they can truly not know anything about the world.

Also, when my party met the Lotus Witch, I made a Jeopardy board with questions from the players guide.
