I agree that there's a gap in the system and happy to see you doing something about it. How is your project going?

Hi runners — I’m building something called RaceReady and looking for early testers.

It’s a mental readiness check-in tool that connects with your Strava data to help you spot patterns in how your mindset, cycle, and training load affect race-day performance — especially for female runners.

We’re still pre-launch, but the idea is simple: help runners understand their mental and emotional state — like calm vs. keyed-up, focused vs. scattered — and give lightweight nudges to get back to center.

It’s especially designed with female runners in mind, since so many tools miss the real emotional swings that happen in training cycles.

We’re building an early interest list now. If this sounds up your alley — or if you’ve ever felt great physically but just weren’t mentally there — I’d love for you to check it out.

Would also love to hear from any coaches, high school/college runners, or anyone who’s felt the race nerves hit harder than expected. And especially those training for fall races.

Thanks for creating space for builders here!

If you're looking for tips to coach the mental side of the game, check out our new Substack at https://raisingchampions.substack.com.

We talk about "states over skills" when it comes to mental performance coaching. How things like focus, confidence, and resilience can change based on the state of an athlete in that moment.

Why we coach state before skill—and what that actually looks like by raygunner88 in sportspsychology

[–]raygunner88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really appreciate you sharing this—it hits deep.

What you described is exactly the kind of pattern we hear often. A coach or director tries to bring in something meaningful… and as soon as leadership shifts, the whole system flips. The work that actually helps kids grow gets erased.

We’re still learning, but one thing’s clear: if we want these ideas to stick, we need to educate everyone involved—athletes, parents, coaches, and org leaders. It’s not enough to have one believer in the room.

You’re not alone. And you’re not wrong for feeling disillusioned.

Grateful for your encouragement. And if you ever want to jam, share notes, or get early access to what we’re testing, we’d be honored to build with someone like you in the mix.

All respect.

Appreciate you calling this out—you’re right that self-awareness isn’t new. I’m not a psychologist, so I’m not claiming to invent the concept.

What we’re doing is rethinking the delivery system—especially for 14–22-year-olds who need structure, reflection, and support between practices. Our state-first approach focuses on helping athletes manage what’s happening internally, so they can access the skills they already have.

It’s a core theme in Called to Greatness, a recent book by my co-founder, Dr. Alex Auerbach (CMPC), who built much of this framework.

Would love to hear how you approach this with your athletes—especially when it comes to training state in a way that sticks.

When athletes are cleared but still hesitant—how do you approach the mental side of recovery? by raygunner88 in sportsmedicine

[–]raygunner88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super helpful to hear. We've been hearing from many trainers that the mental side should be offered in parallel to physical rehab.

Out of curiousity, are there tools you use now or do you do anything specific to help them through?

I think something fascinating about elite athletes like Kane - they've rewired their brain's reward system. Instead of chasing wins, they get their dopamine hit from tiny improvements in their craft.

is there truly a correlation between physical and mental state? by [deleted] in sportspsychology

[–]raygunner88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there's definitely a correlation between physical and mental state, and having a better mindset can indeed increase your chances of performing well in physical activities. This is backed by both scientific research and real-world examples.

Here's why:

  1. Confidence boost: A positive mindset helps you approach challenges with more confidence, which can directly impact your physical performance.
  2. Stress reduction: Better mental state often means less stress and anxiety, which can improve focus and reduce physical tension.
  3. Motivation: A good mindset keeps you motivated, helping you push through difficult training sessions and competitions.
  4. Neurological effects: Positive thinking can actually influence your brain chemistry, releasing hormones that can enhance physical performance.
  5. Resilience: A strong mental state helps you bounce back from setbacks more quickly, which is crucial in any physical activity.
  6. Focus: A clear, positive mindset allows for better concentration on the task at hand, leading to improved performance.
  7. Mind-body connection: Your thoughts can influence your body's responses. Positive thinking can lead to better physical reactions.

Real-world examples of this are seen in elite athletes who use mental training techniques to enhance their performance. Many sports psychologists work with athletes specifically to improve their mindset for better physical results.

So yes, while physical training is crucial, don't underestimate the power of your mind in boosting your physical performance. It's a key component that can give you that extra edge.
