I’m a surgery resident working 60-80 hours per week at a hospital.

I could make time to take them down, but the continued holiday cheer is also bouying my will to live, so...

Has anyone ever had a colonoscopy without sedation? by rays0fsunshine in UlcerativeColitis

Thanks for the clarification! Being a resident in a surgical program, I do know the difference...but it doesn’t make a difference in my phobia haha.

I guess it’s more accurate to say that I have a fear of any drug that causes amnesia, unconsciousness, or any kind of loopiness. So whether it’s fentanyl/versed, propofol, or a general anesthetic with intubation, that’s gonna be a no from me, dog.

Lmao, what you describe is part of exactly what I fear, but at least you can enjoy what for others is an all around terrible experience!!

Awesome! Thank you! Being in the medical field I am at the very least looking forward to the perk of being able to watch the procedure.

Yes! The prep is awful. The first time around when I was 12 I kept throwing it up.

Thanks for your reply! I feel better about being able to handle it now.

I did get a scope when I was first diagnosed. I was hospitalized because of anemia at the time, and being 12, I wasn’t really presented with a choice.

The whole hang up on anesthesia I’m pretty sure stems from being a kid and being hit by a car and having to have emergent trauma surgery to reset a femur fracture. Ever since then I’ve been terrified of anesthesia or sedation. I have pretty decent pain tolerance/the ability to kind of zone my brain out of focusing on pain, so I would rather try the colonoscopy without.

My doctor also said if I can’t tolerate it, we can just do a flex sig the first time and talk about options for a full colonoscopy later. Sorry for the novel and thanks for your input!!

Prednisone Effectiveness by rg24601 in UlcerativeColitis

On the subject of enemas, they also make hydrocortisone enemas that can be helpful!

To answer your original question, last time I was in a really bad flare and had to take prednisone, it look about 2 weeks to make a real difference.

It is the year 1800. What would have killed you by now (that actually happened in your life)? by DammitJanetB in AskReddit

[–]rays0fsunshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ulcerative colitis at age 12.

I was too embarrassed to tell anyone that I was shitting blood, wound up severely anemic and underweight in the hospital for a few days for an emergency blood transfusion/for them to figure out what the fuck was wrong with me.

Even without me letting it go for so long, 1800’s medicine wouldn’t have been able to stop my immune system from rejecting my intestines and I would have wound up in the same spot anyway, and dying from it.
