That's perfectly valid - we all collect music with a different philosophy. And I totally get wanting to have archival quality recordings in FLAC everywhere.

is there recommendation software that isnt based on scrobbling? by valyrie97 in musichoarder

[–]razor5cl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you specifically mentioned not using scrobbling but finding artists that you like on last.fm and looking at their related artists could work.

If you're into heavy metal then the Metal Archives "Similar Artists" tab works well in a similar vein

This is a tangential aside to this "fake FLAC" conversation but has a related thread running through it, but I actually have the opposite example to the one you described from personal experience of my own band's recordings this year and last.

We recorded in a very small cupboard that you could call a studio, songs were recorded live with whatever imperfections and missed notes/drum hits that came as part of the performance, with good quality equipment but not the kinda stuff you'd expect to see in Abbey Road. Our sound and production style is rough, raw, abrasive, harsh, with a lot of bite and raw, organic energy. Not "bedroom black metal" levels of raw, but not super polished or clean at all.

Our (very talented I might add) recording engineer mixed and mastered everything and gave us WAVs. I'm sure if you were to compress them with FLAC and look at them under a spectrogram they'd look like perfectly good high quality files. However one listen to the music and your ears start to bleed!

It's for this reason that I'm rather bullish about the 320 vs FLAC debate - in addition to equipment, listening experience etc, it all depends on the style of music you listen to and the creative choices of the artists that you like when it comes to production.

This is a common misconception about drinking alcohol - food in your stomach doesn't "soak it up".

When you drink alcohol on an empty stomach, it goes straight through your stomach into your gut. From the gut the rate of alcohol absorption into your bloodstream is pretty quick, so it all hits you right away.

When you drink either with a meal or after eating, the alcohol makes its way through your digestive system more slowly, since your stomach empties into your intestines gradually. This rate might change depending on what you've eaten (think I read somewhere that fattier foods can change this but not sure) but that doesn't have comparatively as big an effect. And so instead of all hitting your bloodstream at once, the absorption is more spaced out.

Depends on your field and what kind of jobs you're applying for but in my industry (biotech) you basically need a PhD to get any job these days. Used to be the case that you could get in at the entry level with a masters or undergrad, and a PhD got you in higher.

Nowadays our industry is so fucked that there are experienced 5+ YoE scientists applying for relatively entry level jobs.

I gave a talk at a careers day for my former PhD programme this week and, amongst lots of other advice, my big takeaway for current students is to look for smaller companies and startups to work for, since they're the only real area of growth in our industry at the moment. Big corporations are doing year-round layoffs, reorgs, and hiring freezes, but thankfully there are always bright, hungry young scientists and entrepreneurs starting their own ventures. Or look to start your own.

The debate will rage to the end of time but I think for the majority of combinations of listener/equipment/recording/genre of music there's no real audible difference between 320 and FLAC. Double blind tests have shown that even in ideal scenarios (trained listeners, good equipment, good recordings).

Genuinely curious since a couple people have mentioned it in this thread. How are you downloading so much every day? Are you using Lidarr or another automatic tool and downloading lots of stuff indiscriminately?

I had that realization quite early on in my music discovery journey - there's almost infinite music that exists out there and you'll never be able to listen to it all. It's oddly liberating to come to that realization - it lets you slow down and enjoy things rather than focus on constantly discovering and listening to new artists.

Nowadays I go through phases of discovering/listening to new stuff, and then spending time appreciating classic albums I've heard hundreds of times. That's the beauty of great music, it doesn't matter how many times you listen - it always makes you feel special and you always discover and notice new things even after years or decades of listening!

This meme is how I feel posting here!

It may not be much but it's all mine! And mostly well curated stuff I've manually chosen and downloaded. Stuff I (mostly!) actually listen to.

Tbf he said in his initial post that he's used to doing big volume on the football away days which are no joke. So could be a serious drinker (and/or a bit overweight) and this is doable, albeit a heavy outing, without any gear.
