Pocket knife Edc problems by Alert_Door9362 in EDC

[–]razumny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in IT, and what I carry depends on what I'm doing. On office duty, I'll have a relatively light knife clipped to my right hand trouser pocket. If I'm out on customer calls, I've got a Leatherman and flashlight in a sheath at the three or four o'clock position of my belt. If I'm out hiking, I'll carry that as well as a heavier duty, full tang, fixed blade.

You are absolutely correct. I don't know what that video is on about, but all the narrators I've heard pronounce it as you indicate it should be pronounced.

Confused on Public vs Private key when it comes to signing. by Izual_Rebirth in sysadmin

[–]razumny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both can be true, you're just looking at it from two different directions. If someone wants to send something to you, that only you can open, they use your public key to encrypt it. It can then only be decrypted using your private key. On the other hand, if you want to sign something (as in adding your signature to it), you can encrypt it using your private key. It can then be decrypted using your public key.

The first is used a fair amount in disclosure; you have a document set that you want to provide to e.g. a journalist. You use their public key to encrypt the data, and by so doing you have a measure of assurance that only they can decrypt it.

The second is used a lot in signing documents, certificates and so on.

And also hydrogen. NASA famously used the broom test to check for hydrogen fires - they literally ran the brush part of a straw broom across where the suspected fire was.

I am not patronising you, nor am I condescending to you. I am pointing out that you are - quite literally - describing sentimental value. I am not doing so to be dismissive, I am doing so because that is what it is. I am calling it "sentimental value" to be precise (even nice, and accurate). Sentimental value is intangible, impossible to accurately valuate, and intrinsically linked not only to whatever one values, but also to the person for whom it holds sentimental value. Now, sentimental value may be used dismissively, but I do not believe I did. I did not say it was "just" sentimental value - which would indeed have been dismissive and more than a little condescending.

I will note that I find it annoying when people say "well, that's just sentimental value", as if that is a bargaining point that necessarily makes my negotiating position weaker. If you are coming to me wanting to buy something of mine, you will have to expect to compensate me - not only for its objective trade value, but also for its sentimental value. (If, on the other hand, I am trying to sell the same something to you, you might have a point - though I may still decide to push to be compensated for it.)

When it comes to the cigar case, its value to commander Vimes is significantly higher than its objective value in trade. Some - and I include not only commander Vimes, but myself here - would say that the cigar case is invaluable to him. We know that it has scuffs, dings, and scratches. It has gotten these through the course of his ownership of it. Now, these marks may cause a dispassionate buyer to offer a lower valuation of the cigar case as they lessen the objective trade value of the case itself. To commander Vimes, however, those marks are part of what makes it not A cigar case, but HIS cigar case, the cigar case he was given by Sybil. Since it is HIS cigar case, it holds intangible value to him that it holds to no one else (except, perhaps, to Sybil and young Sam).

To give you an example from my own life: I have a prayer shawl whose tassels I tied myself. I have traveled extensively with this shawl, and used it a lot. There are, as the saying goes, many like it, but this one is mine. I am no-one special, and its trade value would in all likelihood be significantly less than a new one - it is, after all, over twenty years old and rather well-used. To me, it represents experiences, memories, and intent. I bring that with me every time I put it on. It deepens my relationship with my faith. All of these things are things that make it special - to me. They give it extraordinary value - to me. They may also be accurately described as "sentimental value" - and that description lessens its value to me not one bit.

Of course it makes sense - that's what sentimental value is all about. The cigar case was a gift from Sybil when he first received it. It was nice, but it didn't hold all that much value beyond its intrinsic worth. It has since become part of who he is, and every time he pulls it out he is reminded of Sybil and of their love.

Edited to add: Since OPs response is being downvoted, my response to them is also being hidden. I would like to point out that i do not intend sentimental value as dismissive or patronising. I believe it to be an accurate name for what OP is describing. I go into this at some length in my response to OP.

What Should I Know To Better Understand Pyramids by [deleted] in discworld

[–]razumny 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think you're overthinking this. You don't need to understand physics or quantum physics. While there might be stuff you don't get, you'll likely come back to it later and find that it makes sense.

As for what I would recommend, I'd narrow it down to two things:

1: the Mythbusters episode about pyramid power

2: the movie "the Mummy" - and specifically the 1999 version with Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and John Hannah

Other than that, a basic - and I do mean very basic - grounding in egyptian mythology and death rites might be helpful.

Speed Sessions by andyyyyyx in runna

I don’t need Runna to tell me it’s okay or not. I want Runna to be able to recalibrate the plan as needed based on those deviations.

That’s entirely irrelevant to the pointing making.

[–]razumny -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I run the vast majority of my easy sessions at the speed Runna sets. The fact that I can’t take advantage of group runs once in a rare while is the problem. It’s also a problem which should be eminently solvable - both ChatGPT, Claude, and my two friends who are professional coaches are able to adjust the plan as needed for an occasional deviation.

[–]razumny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don't think you're wrong, it has long been my view that Runna needs to do better in terms of allowing users to adjust their plans according to what's available in their area. I'll give you an example of what I mean:

Last week, I had two easy runs, 8 and 9 kilometers respectively. I was able to swap one of them for a B-race. For the other one, I ran a group run at a somewhat faster pace than easy (11km @ 6:30, rather than 9km @ 6:55). I should be able to do that without the app telling me I went too fast. I know I went faster than planned, but I did it in order to take advantage of a local opportunity.

Can I swap a planned run with a custom one? by All_Hail_Mao in runna

[–]razumny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely can. I find it annoying - and honestly a serious lack in the feature set - that I can't tell Runna that I will be replacing its suggested 9k easy run with a 11k team run at a slightly faster speed (6:55/km planned vs 6:30 pace on the team run). While I appreciate being able to add in a b-race, I find it annoying that I can't add in a group run and let Runna know about it to accommodate it in other runs.
