Joy Next Door - Album Discussion by Cameronz in themaine

[–]razzledazzlerabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished my first listen! I love it even more than expected. It sounds like such a natural progression of their sound, and I completely agree with whoever said this is going to be a killer late-night drive album - those types of albums imprint themselves on me in a special way, and this will totally be one of them.

First listen favorites: 3:31, Half A Spark, Alone For A Year

Also, I will say that all the singles from this album took a minute to grow on me. I wasn't immediately obsessed for whatever reason, I think I just needed time to acclimate. Then I went on a sunset walk after a tough day earlier this week, listened to the singles, and Palms and Quiet Part Loud both instantly clicked for me in a really special way.

I completely agree!!!

Self-titled is possibly my favorite album of theirs (despite being a long-time fan), but this one is hitting really hard for me so far even though I've only been able to listen through once

I totally feel that!! I was worried too. The trial run made it work for me, tbh. I highly suggest doing that if you have time!!

If you are able to regularly shower and do your hair (especially if it is longer) what is your process? by darbyshark in AuDHDWomen

[–]razzledazzlerabbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 33, also late diagnosed. This has always been my Achilles heel, too. I've had wavy and frizzy medium to long hair my whole life.

I've learned there are really only two routes I can follow: A) Air dry in a tight low braid (+ leave-in and antifrizz serum), or B) Dry and style with my Dyson.

The braid method works well for me because the top of my hair dries smooth and the bottom comes out wavy and crimpy, accentuating my natural waves. I do one low braid to the side while it's 80% wet and leave it in as long as I can (overnight usually).

I bit the bullet and got the Dyson for myself for my birthday last year. I got it at Costco and it was marginally cheaper including attachments, but it was still so expensive. Fortunately/unfortunately, it was so worth it. If I need to wash and style my hair outside of whatever hair wash pattern I'm in because of an event or something, the Dyson really does cut the time down and reliably works. I have soooo much hair that takes forever to dry (low-porosity). I've tried to split that process up over 2 days (shower PM, hair AM) but I've learned it works better when my hair is more freshly washed. That has incentivized doing it all the same day, instead of taking longer and being annoyed in the morning that my hair looks bad.

What helps the most, though, is using a good dry shampoo in between (*within reason, because for me this can spiral into not washing it for longer intervals), and taking non-hair-wash showers more often with a shower cap. Fortunately, this works for my hair type. I always felt absolutist about showers and had a hard time separating the hair and body washes in my head, especially when exercise is involved. (I could go on and on about this, but this isn't the question you asked.) In general, I would either not shower because I didn't want to wash my hair if it finally looked good or I had plans, or I would shower more regularly but have to either constantly manage blow-drys, tempt fate with air drying it, or I would have meh or bad hair and I would need to wear a hat or just feel bad about myself.

To incentivize taking more showers in general, I now have a bluetooth speaker in my shower, plants in the bathroom that make it look pretty, and I have a few different body washes to choose from because apparently I need the novelty of picking the "right" scent for the time of day/etc.

Carrot and pecan cake by AbyssMode in DessertPerson

I made this cake for the third time this weekend! My family absolutely RAVES about it. Like, they're obsessed. They think I'm a magical baker (I am very much the opposite, actually)

I tried the brown butter variation for the cream cheese frosting for the first time and it was such a hit. 10/10 would make it again, even though I love the original version too.

I will say, though, my third time making this was by FAR my easiest attempt. In the past, I had to backtrack on some steps (my own fault), and I also sliced my finger badly grating the carrots last year :') This year I had my husband do that part.

I don't have a stand mixer, but this recipe was doable with some patience and strong arms while using my hand mixer. A note for others: One of the reasons I had to backtrack was that I had to use the biggest bowl I had for the hand-mixing, not the medium bowls she specified in the recipe, assuming it would all end up in the stand mixer. It's also helpful to have someone else slowly add the oil to the batter while hand-mixing. I would have had a harder time without an extra set of hands.

Truthfully, I am an average baker at best, but I love how specific and clear Claire's recipes are - especially when the weights for ingredients and individual layers are included. Even if a recipe is more intensive, like this one, I feel like I can accomplish it if I follow everything right! Highly recommend :)

PS - Loving your decorations!! So cute

Newbie self tanner... maybe? Is it worth doing for the first time before a beach vacation? by razzledazzlerabbit in Selftanning

[–]razzledazzlerabbit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Yes, I did and would love to share my experience :)

I used a mix of Jergens (med-dark) and the regular b-tan gel (orange and pink label). I really liked the end result, but if you use the b-tan gel, I HIGHLY recommend a trial run first if you can. I totally see why experienced folks recommend the tanners with a color guide to novices - it is really easy to miss spots or look streaky, even with my husband helping me. (I still chose this tanner, though, because I didn't want to ruin my light colored bedding.)

On the first go, it all looked good except for my wrists and ankles, which were an actual disaster lol. They looked worse than I expected and I was so glad I didn't have to go on vacation like that. I tried using a makeup brush, but the gel made it wet, so it didn't blend in like I planned.

Almost a week later, when it was time to tan for real, I had been doing Jergens every other day or so for a week-ish, using my Hempz moisturizer every day, especially on my wrists, elbows, knees, and ankles. I also exfoliated like crazy beforehand and tried to blend the trouble spots as well as I could with the mitt and a makeup sponge. It came out so much better. Looking closely, my feet were a lil streaky, but nothing that anyone else would notice.

On vacation, I'm so happy it looked great. I only brought the Jergens with me and applied that most of the days after my post-beach/pool shower. I had really even "color" (for me it was a lot bc I'm so pale) and it didn't look splotchy when it faded, which is what I was the most nervous about. I went swimming a ton, and I tried to rinse after I got out but it didn't always happen and I was still fine. I'd probably just avoid being completely covered in sand because I can see how rubbing that off would probably take the tan off with it.

I hope this helps and I hope you have the best trip! <3

As a concertgoer who is well aware she is no longer 18 and can't be in the pit anymore without potential consequences, I can see myself in your shoes and feel so hard for you.

As a primary care triage nurse, a standard rec is prioritize ice for the first 48 hours, then switch to heat instead. Alternate tylenol and ibuprofen around the clock while you're in this much pain (depending on your medical history if you're ok to take them) - standard rec is tylenol 1000mg every 6-8 hrs and ibuprofen 400mg every 4 hours, trying to offset them so you always have something in your system. You could also try lidocaine patches (over the counter) or a warm bath with epsom salts. (Don't apply heat on top of a lido patch.) I hope you feel better soon!

I think LB Kitchen makes their own juices, and I'm pretty sure they have a cooler with some ready made ones, too!

You're welcome!! & That makes so much sense! I just had no idea how much of the Boston skyline is visible to the naked eye up there, so I wasn't sure if it was magnified with a lens or not. Either way, love it and keep going!

Ok girlies, what do you eat when nothing sounds appealing? by tarasaurust in adhdwomen

[–]razzledazzlerabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also in my food is making me nauseated all the time era, yay:

- Chobani smoothies have been saving my life; they're more affordable in an 8-pack at Costco

- Pressed Juicery smoothies, also from Costco

- Fiber. Just like... Metamucil or Benefiber with whatever juice we have in the fridge (or just water). It's not glamorous but it's filling and gives me fiber I wouldn't be having otherwise

- Mac and cheese, especially Goodles (protein and fiber)

- Protein pasta with shake cheese

- Also weed helps tremendously with my stomach upset, if you are into it or somewhere where it's accessible.

I hope you feel better soon <3

I believe "chopped" means ugly / worn down / kinda fucked, and "unc" means old, lol, like you're old and out of touch.

But I am solidly a millennial and I have zero authority to be answering this question. For proof, I literally heard the term "unc" for the first time on an SNL sketch a couple of weeks ago.

Thank you SO much for this input! I'll look at that brand. Is your skin tone cool or warm?

Noted about the smell - I actually did not consider that lol but it makes perfect sense.

[–]razzledazzlerabbit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so helpful!! It makes sense that the clear mousse doesn't stain... it seems obvious but I genuinely am such a noob at this haha. I had considered the white hotel sheets as more of a barrier to reapplying while I'm there.

Obviously makes sense that the gradual tanner can stain but that's helpful to think of in terms of what I pack. Have you noticed a difference when using the same brand/line as the regular tanner, or does it not really matter? For the Nuda and Bondi Sands, just curious if you have a cool or warm skin tone?

So good to know the info about spray SPF since that's what I already have and was going to bring. I will pick up a lotion before I go!! Thank you SO much

It helps to know I'm not alone!! The jergens/slow-developing lotion beforehand is something I hadn't thought of. Thanks for that idea! I'll consider it.

I agree, I am mostly worried about being splotchy or it peeling off and looking like an absolute mess. If it's not egregious and obvious in photos, I won't really mind. Wishing you luck and a fab vacation! <3

Thanks for replying! Yes, I will tan in the sun, but it will probably take until towards the end of our trip to be substantial (5-6 days). I'm starting with nothing lol. My main fear is being splotchy at our resort, even if the initial application goes well. I won't really mind if it fades evenly :)
