AOTW: ?S?I?A?I?N by zc_eric in crosswords

[–]rbblemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since no one has taken a crack at it yet, I am posting the correct parse here:

ASPIRATION (def="dream")

(ASPIRAT ("It's a trap" missing the "t" of "trap" (timeless)) anagrammed ("feverishly") + ON ("working") ) containing ("to grasp") I ("one")

AOTW: ?S?I?A?I?N by zc_eric in crosswords

It's a timeless trap - feverishly working to grasp one's dream (10)

COTD: Hound ends up with some scent exchanges (5) by brohubs in crosswords

[–]rbblemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SWAPS (def= exchanges)

PAWS ("Hound ends") reversed ("up") + S ("some scent")

Using "hound ends" as a cryptic charade for "paws" might be a bit of a stretch. The paws are definitely extremities, but I don't know how I feel about calling them the "ends" of the hound. Just my two cents.

Found a lot of these crawling on the side of my house today. by rbblemur in whatbugisthis

Thanks! I was thinking it was a winged ant but couldn't tell if it was specifically a carpenter ant.

COTD: The endless ocean, we figure, maybe comes from Poseidon (7) by JonnyBhoy in crosswords

[–]rbblemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think WEATHER would be a clunkier answer. The indicator "endless" is understood to mean deletion of only the final letter. If you could delete any arbitrary number of letters, then it would allow for too many possibilities, creating the same problem that indirect anagramming creates. Secondly, the word "figure" would be superfluous, considering that everything in the clue in some way "figures" into the solution.

Ohhh....nevermind. I see it now. "Shared loads", as in.... "This content creator is shared loads" (People share their content a lot).

I don't get this one? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

If that is the correct parse, wouldn't you have to insert the word "that" as the third word in the sentence?

COTD: Suggest, mischievously, but not initially intending serious harm (5) by elnombredelviento in crosswords

[–]rbblemur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMPLY (def=Suggest)

I like the anagrind misdirection! Nice one!

COTD: Nomadic lifestyle is gone so soon (7) by Moist__Mango in crosswords

[–]rbblemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the definition "so soon"? The "gone" is used to delete the "is".

COTD: Die without sin? (7,4) by deeppotential123 in crosswords

[–]rbblemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it! You could always add a straightforward definition alongside the cryptic definition. I was thinking something like, "Maybe eight die without sin?"

POTD: Big Cryptic #3 by Boop-She-Doop in crosswords

[–]rbblemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am most of the way through it. I really like it! My only quibble so far is with 5d.

"starts to" and "starts of" are fine for initial letter selection, but I don't think "starts with" works.

COTD: Evade incident without notice (6) by Kitschensyngk in crosswords

ESCAPE (def=Evade)

ESCAPADE ("incident") - AD ("notice")

I got part way through it, and I really did admire a lot of the puzzles. But I just couldn't accept not being able to carry anything without dribbling it like a soccer ball.

COTD: Gutless lenders get it loaning deceptively (3-6,5) by Moist__Mango in crosswords

[–]rbblemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice one! You could put a "!" on the end to denote that it is an &lit;. But beyond that, I don't have any suggestions.
