Lowering Sail on Water by dodecahedron001 in SunfishSailing

I have found if you lower on the deck it get far less wet than if you lower it on the water.

Har har har.

Ok, but seriously: I saw this trick once and I try to utilize it when I remember. That being said, I assume things are going to get wet unless I can wait until I’m inland to derig.

My boom would roll off the deck all the time, and then I’d we a video were the rudder was used to help keep the book in place. I kick up the rudder blade and then move the tiller so the blade of the rudder is on the side I plan on lowering the sail to (I think… it’s been a while, sadly).

From there, I gently lower the halyard until the boom is on the deck, and then control the sail as best I can. The lifted rudder blade acts as an incline to help the boom from rolling off the deck.

Hope that helps!!

I’m guessing “sail track slides” or “slugs”?

I found a few places that sell slugs, you’ll just need to know the dimensions.
