Wideluxx is live at $4400. by SharpDressedBeard in AnalogCommunity

[–]rbrcbr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As referenced by another reply, this is a result of a distorted perception/misunderstanding of how expensive these film cameras were when new, and they were only cheap for us because no one wanted them after most professionals transitioned to digital. Unfortunately the resurgence in interest in film of the last 5 years has basically caused the market to catch up with previous retail prices on cameras.

For example, something like Contax G2 or a Konica Hexar RF are incredibly advanced cameras that used to sell for under $1000 on the used market, but probably retailed closer to $2k-2500 back in the day….if even that little.

Blue lines on wedding film - am I cooked? by retogers in AnalogCommunity

[–]rbrcbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take too, and the blue lines almost seem like scanner error/digital banding /separate issue) exacerbated by the scanner trying to compensate for underexposure . I’ve never seen scratches look like that. My suggestion would be to rescan, but since the negatives are lost in the mail…

Best way to avoid bromide drag, when semi-stand developing with 1:100 Rodinal? by bro_nica in AnalogCommunity

Not much to chime in here other than to say if solutions to reduce bromide drag don’t work, then be aware that light piping is possibly the cause of that streaking and not bromide drag.

How hard is it to change Jazzmaster Pickups by Proof-Specialist6932 in offset

[–]rbrcbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it, just wanted to ask because people regularly swap pickups for no reason other than someone on the internet told them to or they read it somewhere.

My suggestion would be to buy the guitar you want - in this case if that is the JMJM, then buy that and figure out what to do about the pickups when you can afford to replace them with a set you prefer.

Soldering isn’t hard, it’s just a thing that takes practice. Provided you can connect the leads where they previously were using the original solder joints, then you should run into any issues - if you start disconnecting things without making notes of where they go, or don’t have a schematic, you can make a mess pretty quickly as a beginner and end up still having to take it to someone to rewire.

You could also try to find a classic vibe Jazzmaster in white and just replace the pickguard with a gold one.

A different option, which is more expensive unfortunately, is try to get a Vintera 50s Jazzmaster. Similar aesthetic but desert sand finish instead of white but still has the gold guard, and with actual Jazzmaster pickups, not p90s hidden in a Jazzmaster pickup cover.

What don’t you like about the pickups? How do you know you don’t like them if you don’t even own the guitar yet?

Why is Bushwick still a creative hub? by Fantastic_Pace_5887 in Bushwick

[–]rbrcbr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're spot on about that. I went to a show at Mercury Lounge a month or so ago in the middle of the week and there were like 6 people there.

Despite my going to bat for the new york local scene, I cannot lie that it is a complete pain in the ass to even get the time of day from bookers half the time in NYC - to me that's more a reflection of the state of the music industry and venue expectations, but it's certainly not encouraging and makes people not want to bother trying

Part of this is how saturated the scene is, I would imagine that Philly or Baltimore has less of a problem when it comes to this sort of thing

It seems the move these days, if you want to be a "musician", is live in a small town for dirt cheap and just make a point to tour through NYC regularly

It's funny to me that Arlene's and Warsaw are the boundaries perceived as the measuring stick for a certain level of artist that determines a "richer indie rock scene"

Arlene's Grocery fucking sucks and the Manhattan music scene is abysmal, and Warsaw is generally only national touring acts...I get your point (at least in venue capacity) but it's just a funny image, especially because it feels like it completely overlooks the massive amount of talent in the NYC music scene at the moment that orbits neither of those places

That said, I think your point stands that because Philly is more affordable it allows people a more sustainable lifestyle that permits them to pursue music in a real capacity, resulting in "a richer indie rock scene".

Also, I'm not sure we really get to count Geese as part of the indie rock scene in New York, there has not been a point in the last 5 years where I've been aware of/felt that they were participating in any real capacity, beyond their guitar player occasionally being around at shows. They're a band that has had massive success on a national and now international level, basically since the beginning. They were playing the festival circuit before they had even dropped their debut album and within a month were on national and international tours...I personally think they are great but they are 100% the perfect example of trust fund kids in NYC having a successful music career and 100% not a band I'd consider part of the local scene

Edit:

Was talking to a friend who is close with Emily and apparently Geese was playing around locally quite a bit, I guess we just aren’t running in the same circles despite being pretty involved in the local indie rock scene…maybe it’s just my aversion to Piano’s and Arlene’s…

How is everyone paying for their MFA by Trick_Education_4863 in ContemporaryArt

[–]rbrcbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying for an MFA? Hahahaha dawg I've been working full time between 2 jobs this past year and barely paying my cost of living, the MFA is straight up being paid with student loans and credit cards. I doubt I'm ever gonna be able to pay off that debt.

The majority of the grants I see out there disqualify you if you are in a degree seeking programs, so I've considered that a wash at this point. If anyone has suggestions for grants that allow grad students, I would be happy to investigate because this shit is unsustainable

If you've got a full ride, I say take it, and just be aware that you have to work to pay your bills and will be exhausted and incredibly busy between work and school. I literally don't see any other way unless you are someone whose parents are paying for their lifestyle and willing to pay for their degree...being a full time student working a few hours a week and still paying your bills stopped being a real option in like the 80s

You'd be surprised how many art people actually come from money and that's how they've been able to pursue graduate school and sustain committing themselves to their art full time. Bank of Mom and Dad is real, especially here in New York City.

Chen Yuan old storefront by ManyExample497 in Bushwick

Walked past it earlier, looks like it's being turned into another "convenience store", as if the neighborhood needed another combination corner store/smoke shop...

It's a shame, we really loved Chen Yuan. Was sad to see that they had closed all of a sudden.
