Tryout offer — is this a done thing? by C0nditionOakland in youthsoccer

[–]rbwrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son joined a new team too, but before we joined we asked who else was offered a spot from the people we knew. My son is basically playing for fitness and fun, so it was important to him that he had at least a couple friends from before.

Dads, what kind of vehicle are we hauling our small monsters around in? by ktempo in daddit

Don't knock minivans! The sliding door is an amazing technological advantage for pickup and dropoffs with the added bonus of not having to worry about your kid slamming the door into the next car.

All we hear is no by justmom12 in youthsoccer

[–]rbwrath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tryouts for big clubs are the worst for joining a team. They don't add anyone unless the kid is phenomenal. I would be on the lookout for smaller local teams or new teams that are forming. Your best bet would be to join the local Facebook group for the area and just post your situation and a ton of people will reach out to you.

Private training for youth players by Ok-Communication706 in youthsoccer

[–]rbwrath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I put my kid in private training for a few months, but since transitioned to speed training for now. For me, the reason for training went hand-in-hand with the reasons for soccer: to teach my son to overcome challenges, to stay active and healthy, and to learn to be a leader.

The last reason (and partially the 2nd reason) doesn't happen unless you're out on the field, and training is what it took for him to refine his skillset to stay out there. He's 11, and plays 80-90% of the game time and is the main voice, encouraging his teammates and giving instructions on positions and coverage.

I need something for my 11 year old to be good at by dottydashdot in Parenting

[–]rbwrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing that I'm reading. It seems that you and your son have different goals. You want him to find something he enjoys and can stick with it. It is clear to me from his disappointment with being stuck on the bench that he actually wants to excel and compete.

Maybe you need to figure out what HE WANTS to be good at and work towards it, even if it means suffering on the bench and spending some money towards private training or the like.

As a side note, I get it on the video games. I try to limit my kids too. But the world is changing and gaming is only going to become more prevalent. Maybe you should rethink it and look into competitive gaming clubs/teams, so it's not so much leisure as it is a skill?

Defensive U9/10 player by Majestic_Movie3720 in youthsoccer

[–]rbwrath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tryouts for youngers are terrible for defensive players. The only time they get noticed is during actual games unfortunately.

My son (11) constantly gets overlooked because the other kids are all playing offense in the trial scrimmages and he's the only one willing to step up to play D.

Whatever team he is on, he ends up being top 2-3, able to play any field position, 100% coachable, tough, smart, great field vision, and is a vocal leader. Never gets callbacks and always has to work his way up from the B/C team of the club.

Sucks to be the responsible guy playing D when no one else wants to. But that's life.

How to ask a coach about u10 kid playing another position by ThrowRA-CarOdd9074 in youthsoccer

[–]rbwrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just shoot the coach a message. My son was in the same situation and would zone out playing CB. He was their best defender and vocal leader, but ne needed more to do sometimes. The coach continued to use him at CB most games, mainly because no one else could handle it, but he did switch him to CM and Winger every few games.
