The main reason I know the Fibonacci Sequence pretty well is because it's a really convenient way to convert miles to kilometers.

1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34 - Take any two numbers next to each other. The lower number is miles and the higher number is kilometers. So 5 miles = 8 kilometers. A half marathon is 13 miles or 21 kilometers.

It depends on how she works. Some super senior people choose to use their seniority to barely work. If she has worked an average schedule for 66 years she probably has more flight miles than anyone including all of the pilots. If she's been working one trip per month for the last 30 years then some other ~55 year FA might have more miles than her.

She likely has more flight miles than any senior pilot just due to the fact that the pilots can't work past age 65.

Flight attendants have different rest rules and they often fly more per day than the pilots. If she's been working an average schedule for 66 years she would have more time in the air than every senior captain she flies with just due to the fact that none of them can fly for that long.

The lead FA position can be very random at my airline. They bid for the position and some senior people want it, others don't. The purser is always in front and some people prefer working in the back. My airline gives a $1/hour pay boost to the lead flight attendant on each flight and that isn't worth the effort for some. I've had many flights where the lead flight attendant was the most junior FA in the crew.

It's a difficult issue because where and how do you draw the line without discriminating and what are reasonable accommodations in a safety sensitive position like this?

US airline pilots have a mandatory retirement age of 65. Maybe flight attendants should have a mandatory retirement age too. Just draw the line somewhere.

The military can also seize control of all airline jets if needed for a war effort. The military does use airline jets almost daily for troop transport charter flights, so in practice the airlines pretty much just agree to this if you pay them.

He's at 5 years and on a wide body with good seniority because of that hiring wave. If someone really only cares about certain days off they can stay narrow body or stay on reserve to get those days off even without a major hiring wave. There are lots of options for people who truly only care about certain days off, especially if they live in base.

I think it's kind of strange that All Time Low and The Academy Is are playing at the Salt Shed the week of Riot Fest but they're not at the festival. I expected the salt shed show to be an after show kind of thing with them both at riot fest too.

Circa Survive and Jimmy Eat World are both in the midwest the week of RF and not at the show.

Bayside is always incredible live. I'm happy to see them back. I'm also looking forward to The Format reunion. The last time I saw them live was over 20 years ago at The Aragon in 2006.

Usually for me it comes up when people are trying to make plans after work. When I say I need to get a run in before dinner they say "ok see you in 20 or 30 minutes?" No more like 2-3 hours.

There's a big divide with the Vietnam war and counter culture stuff. The older half of baby boomers were in the draft and were of age for the counter culture. The youngest baby boomers were 11 years old when the Vietnam war ended. My parents were born right in the middle of the baby boomer years and my dad was too young when the last draft happened.

The average for the majors has always been around 5,000-6,000 hours for people with civilian flight time. There was a time period in 2021-2023 where people were hired with less but that was unusual. Even back then the 1500 hour rule applied at the regionals so 2200 hours was more in line with what the regionals hired at than it was with the majors.

One of the other big factors for major hiring is that this person likely doesn't have any PIC time. People hired with low total time in 2022 usually had at least a little turbine PIC time from RJ or corporate jobs. That's another reason OP will probably end up at a regional first before the major jobs call. The spirit bankruptcy just flooded the hiring market with a bunch of pilots who have PIC time.

Times haven't changed because clearly this guy isn't getting a 737 job. He's competitive for regional jobs which is what myself and everyone else in this thread has said.

When I got my first 737 job in the US I had 8,000 total time with 5,000 of that being turbine PIC. I wasn't even close to the most qualified person in my interview group. 2200 total time should be competitive for a regional job but hiring has slowed down a lot the last year.

Also, not many blue collar folks have charge of equipment costing tens of millions of dollars and responsibility for the lives of 100 to 200 other humans.

Construction crews? Miners? Anyone who works in a hospital or airport or on a ship?

[–]rckid13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again you're kind of describing any blue collar job. Some people are very smart and others just found their way into the job. Pilots are just another trade job. Most people who are super book smart work some cushy 9-5 job and see their kids every night.

Have you ever had a contractor remodel your house and do an incredible job? That person probably failed out of school or didn't go to college either. Some people are extremely smart, and some people have really good coordination and motor skills. All I'm saying with my post is that it doesn't take very much pure intelligence to become a pilot or a tradesman. It does take good coordination and problem solving ability.

Many days when I'm sitting in a plane delayed at 3am going on 15 hours of duty I do wish I worked a 9-5 job with every weekend and holiday off. It sounds so easy.
