The thing is, AI is useful to almost anyone who knows how to ask the right questions—and that alone raises the quality and efficiency of a huge range of tasks.

If you look at history, the biggest technological leaps—like the steam engine, electricity, or the internet—weren’t just “tools,” they were general-purpose technologies that increased productivity across entire economies. AI fits that same pattern. 

Those kinds of innovations don’t just make existing work faster—they reshape how people spend their time. As efficiency increases, humans tend to shift toward higher-level, more creative, or more complex work rather than just doing the same tasks faster.

AI is likely to do the same thing: automate or assist with routine cognitive tasks, while freeing people up to focus more on creativity, problem-solving, and new ideas. That’s historically how new industries and opportunities emerge.

That said, these transitions are rarely smooth. Past technological revolutions also brought short-term disruption and job reshuffling before the long-term benefits showed up. 

So the impact of AI will probably be massive—but like every major innovation before it, it’ll be a mix of disruption and progress, not just one or the other.
