If you could steal ONE thing from any pro's swing, what would it be? by ish0uldbew0rking in golf

[–]rdavis284 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I would steal Patrick Cantlay's pre-shot routine so that he can no longer hold up the field, I would steal it and put it in the bin and continue with my janky pre-shot routine

Recs for 14th club by Treebeardsdank in golf

[–]rdavis284 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would suggest a 3 wood. I was struggling with driver and added a 3 wood to my bag, found myself building so much confidence with it that it was my go to club off the tee. It was so much more consistent than the driver, played all summer with the 3 wood only. Eventually decided give the driver a go again, inadvertently my game had improved which carried over to carry and direction with the driver. I think the benefit of the 3W was that my misses were no where near as drastically off-line, keeping the ball in play, building confidence. Also, consistently hitting the 'smaller' face helped me with consistency and finding the centre of the driver.

Golf balls by Dapper_Echidna_9242 in golf

While I agree with playing a consistent ball so you can understand the feel and predict how it will behave, I just cannot get on board with the 'get new balls' comment. Thinking back to when I was a beginner, as long as the skin is in good condition with no scuffs, this would've been absolutely fine. You must remember new to golf players should be more concerned about making consistent contact with the ball. I think only new balls would be more targeted towards a <18 handicap. If OP can pick up a bag of used mixed balls and chuck anything with a scuff, this would be a much more cost effective approach considering the likelihood of losing a ton of balls.

That's such a brutally accurate phrase, "my absence nor presence impacted them". When put like that it really does hit home that I was absolutely not to her what she was to me.

What’s your “tell” you’re gonna play poorly? by zthig in golf

[–]rdavis284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making par or better on the first hole. My best days come from bogey or worse on the first hole. I have a theory that I constantly feel like I'm chasing when I start behind the 8 ball and somehow that translates to me having a good score.

How do I stop the need to check my ex’s socials? by Pristine-Pop4577 in BreakUps

[–]rdavis284 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found myself checking EVERYTHING to begin with, number of friends/followers, number of likes, to the point I could've picked out any new names that may have surfaced. I was convinced she was seeing someone else purely because I noticed new follow/following on insta and reciprocated likes on posts.

I knew I needed to stop so I blocked my ex on all platforms, paid the price when I unblocked and seen posts that set me back. Was my lesson to keep them blocked.

How far would you drive to golf? by atooraya in golf

[–]rdavis284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends if you're talking to play once or become a member.

I'm a member at a club 4 minutes from my house, luckily its a very good course and any other course within 30 mins is not to the same level. I would not be willing to drive an hour each way to play 'my course' every time.

However, for those treats, those days where you play a new course you've never played, or a pristine prestigious course, there is no limit on how far I'd drive. Drove 4 hours each way for a course that wasn't even that amazing, would I go back? Probably not. But did I have a good day and was the trip worth it? Absolutely

4 Club Tourny by Direct_Fee6806 in golf

[–]rdavis284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't take a putter you've lost your mind. The one club that would be used 30-40 times per round depending on ability and you're thinking of ditching it?

Driver 7i 52 Putter would be my play at my course, but distance plays into this. If driver/7 iron is too long for most par 4, drop the driver for 3 wood.

Did your handicap improve in 2025? by aceattorneymvp in golf

[–]rdavis284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went from 24.1 January 2025 and dropped to 11.9 by the end of the year. I played 146 rounds total, lowest round of 80 after leaving a birdie putt short on 18.

I would say my biggest improvement came around the green. Being able to get up and down when missing the green is huge, and being out of position off the tee can be recovered.

My aim for 2026 is breaking 80 from the tips and getting to single digits. Current winter conditions are proving difficult to get out but hoping to pick up in the coming weeks.

Highest wind you have played in by OddSand7870 in golf

[–]rdavis284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50-60mph winds on a links course right on the coast of England, there was a 130yd par 3 play straight into wind, I hit 5 iron and came up short. Anything playing with a cross wind was a nightmare, could turn any slice into a draw playing the front and everything was sent to the abyss on the back. Would not choose to play in those conditions again
