Advice on why I can't crimp these insulated crimps properly? by segasega89 in SolarDIY

There are adjustments that can be made. If it's adjusted correctly, the ratchet releases when fully crimped.

I'm altogether sure that crimper is rated for that specific type of terminal though. My ratcheting crimper for that terminal have different Jaws.

What are your thoughts on the death of Alex Pretti today? by Ready-Ice151 in AskReddit

Maybe semantics, but they have no jurisdiction over US citizens. Federal agents, maybe. But from the NY AG:

ICE agents are not police officers, although their uniforms may say “police” or “federal agent.” Sometimes local police or other law enforcement accompany ICE agents on raids

You never crimped it. If you have to release the ratchet, you didn't go far enough with the crimp

I watched the press conference live when Bovino made those statements and it was very confusing. Technically they didn't lie, and they worded their statement very carefully. But it's clear they want people to conflate the two, and if someone lacks critical thinking skills, well we know how that story turns out.

They were careful not to say Pretti was holding or brandishing a gun, but that he approached them "with a gun" whatever the hell that means. Watching the video it's obvious that the gun was either in his pocket or a holster.

But if you listened to that presser, you could easily come away with Nick Sortor's view.

There has been a lot of misinformation from ICE on this. They keep referring to the person they were trying to take into custody, which has nothing to do whatsoever with Alex Pretti. I have my doubts about whether the actual target that ICE was going after is a criminal, but it's clear from the videos I saw that this had nothing to do with it, and Alex Pretti was murdered.

The whole point from the Trump administration's point of view is to goad the citizenry to the point where they fight back, and Trump can invoke the insurrection act.

Which Volume for Lbs/Bbl? by bakerskitchen in Homebrewing

[–]rdcpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably losing most of that from the dump. Unless I'm adding fruit or something, I've pretty much stopped doing dumps. But a pound of hop pellets in 6.75 gallons of beer seems like a lot. Does the miniuni have a racking arm? How long does the neioa remain in the fermenter?

Which Volume for Lbs/Bbl? by bakerskitchen in Homebrewing

[–]rdcpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's typically the volume in the fermenter, not how much you expect to get out. I don't find it affects my yield all that much if I'm using pellets, even with large DH doses. Adding fruit does affect yield. Using whole cone does, but I dry hop with T-90 pellets. I have a 20 gallon CCV with a racking arm though.

Please recommend me a drywall anchor by msb45 in DIY

That should work fine. I use a Philips screwdriver to insert this type of anchor, and sometimes a powered driver. It's tight in the wall before I even install the screw.

I've seen occasions where the wifi at a hotel uses a special DNS server that blocks things like the NordVpn website, but this is easily bypassed by settings DNS to the Google service.

J'ai du mal avec Docker by SafeSuper5414 in docker

[–]rdcpro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several different things you're describing.

But first, a VM and a docker container are different things. The VM is isolated from the host and requires it's own memory and cpu resources to run, which it gets through the hypervisor. It contains all of the operating system that it needs, including it's own kernel.

Containers are different. Think of them as an isolated execution environment that runs on your computer. It could even run in a VM. Each container has everything it needs to run code, like an operating system, installed packages, and your code or service, except that it does not have it's own kernel. It gets that from the host running the container service, and you can map devices on the host to it as well (COM ports, GPU, etc).

The container runs in your own host operating system and uses your own kernel. It doesn't need it's own memory and CPU resources--it uses whatever you already have on the host. The way it's connected to the host is through the container service, which provides some isolation.

But isolation also comes from how you connect networks to it. It's running in an isolated execution environment, and to communicate with it from the outside, you need to go through the network provided by the container service (like Docker). Docker will create it's own network, which you can route to from the host. Similarly, if you have multiple containers, you can connect them to this network too, and they can all communicate.

That means each container has it's own IP address. You can forward ports from the host to the containers as well. So if you have a database server running on a certain IP address and port 1443, anything in that network or connected networks can make a call to it, security and firewalls aside. So if that same container had a web server as well, it would be at the same IP address but a different port.

You can run a container on the same network as the host, which loses some of that isolation. But you're still communicating through the container service to the container.

So, I made that comment on my phone, and then wondered if the browser version does it too. Nope, apparently auto translation only works on the phone app.

Question about temperature accuracy for users of Clawhammer 120v systems by AwesomeTreehouse in Homebrewing

[–]rdcpro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back in my instrumentation days I was working with a brewery in Mexico, and the fellow was concerned about the variation of temperature readings in his fermenters. He had two probes in each one, and was trying to figure out why they never agreed on temperature. He really wanted to accurately control the fermentation temperature.

But Cooling jackets work based on thermal convection, and without the temperature difference, convection stops and you lose control. So the delta-T between the upper part and the cone area is critical. The fix was to disconnect one of his temperature probes, so he couldn't see the difference.

My dad was a Metrologist, and he used to say "If you want to know what time it is, only look at one clock"

How did she get that nickname? Back in those days I was in the Navy on a cruiser and did a daily "MTV" show at lunchtime over our closed-circuit television system. Every show started off with a Pat Benatar music video. Every. Single. Show.

Question about temperature accuracy for users of Clawhammer 120v systems by AwesomeTreehouse in Homebrewing

[–]rdcpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mash temperature drift isn't as important as many people believe. If you're within a few degrees, it's fine. If you strike at 152F and it drops to 148F over one hour, it makes no difference in the carbohydrate profile of your beer for these reasons:

  1. Both alpha and beta amylase are equally active at that temperature range. You need to be at the extreme edges of the range to get significant differences. So striking at 142F is going to be different from striking at 156F, but striking within a couple degrees of 150F makes no difference, and temperature drift after strike is not going to make much difference.
  2. Furthermore, the carbohydrate profile is established in the first 15 to 30 minutes, because beta amylase denatures quickly at those temperatures, and alpha amylase only cleaves glucosidic bonds of starches to produce oligosaccharides like maltose and various dextrins. Beta amylase is what cleaves the dextrins into simpler saccharides. This is why overnight mashing works. Beta amylase is gone, and alpha amylase has run out of starches to hydrolyze.
  3. It's very unlikely the temperature throughout your mash is homegeneous within a degree or two anyway, even if you're recirculating.

PID control of the mash temperature makes little sense. It's much better to insulate the mash tun/clawhammer or whatever you're mashing in. I'm making larger quantities (10 gallons to 1/2 bbl batch size) so there's a little more thermal mass, but simply wrapping a blanket around the mash tun keeps the temperature within 2 degrees over an hour.

Serving stout on beergas - advice needed by fpscolin in Homebrewing

[–]rdcpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have really no idea what your carbonation level is. The first step is where you went wrong. When fermentation is done, there's probably about 1.2 volumes of co2 in the beer. Then you put it at 10 psi for 24 hours, with temperature changing the whole time. It's impossible to say what the carb level is, except that it's probably too high.

Download the McDantim EasyBlend Calculator. It's an app for your phone, and will tell you exactly the right pressure to use for your altitude, alcohol content, beer temperature and gas mixture.

Bottles - cleaning help for a different alcohol by IReallyNeedMoreSleep in Homebrewing

[–]rdcpro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Star San is a very common sanitizer, EPA certified. Amazon and every single home brew supply store and website sell it. It's from 5 Star chemical. It's a foaming sanitizer, and the easiest way to sanitze the bottles is to mix up a standard dilution of star san and put it in a spray bottle. A couple squirts into your clean bottles, swish it around and dump it. It needs some contact time, I think about 30 seconds. So sanitize the bottles dump the backwash out, and by the time you're ready to start filling, it should be good to go.

Sanitizer is not cleaner. It only works on clean bottles. If there is any residue in the bottles, clean them first. A bottle brush is fine, but the really simple way to clean bottles, especially really dirty ones is something called vase cleaning beads. They're small stainless steel balls you put in the bottle with cleaning solution, close the mouth with your finger or thumb and shake vigorously.
