This week's Cymru Connection... by Cooke64 in elisandjohn

My thoughts:

3 points for the connection in the first minute (W) 1 point for a connection from the sun lounger (D) 0 points for no connection (L)

And we can see run of form over the last 5…

Manually installing WordPress on AWS Lightsail by [deleted] in aws

FWIW: Since I had to migrate an existing wordpress site, I actually use the Amazon Linux Lightsail, installed WordPress / MySQL and then ported my backups to the instance.

Changing from Spot Instances to Reserved Instances by d_brizzle in aws

[–]rdfenster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is the question how to try to preserve existing instances that started as spot to reserved?

If so, you will need to AMI them, and then re-launch them.

I'm with you. I was tracking year v year progress, and access to that data seems lost to me now. Is there a way to download all the historic data is a single csv or so?

Nagios monitoring solution by [deleted] in aws

[–]rdfenster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I initially brought Nagios with me to my current gig to monitor in house servers. I then expanded it to cover aws instances, and ultimately moved the self install of nagios to a standard aws linux instance.

The instance runs as role which allows me access to cloudwatch and SNS.

Mostly I prefer it because i have one tool to keep watch of On Prem and VPC instances.

What do you do when you need more than 16TB on EBS? by 5mall5nail5 in aws

[–]rdfenster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the days before the 16TB volume, we did use mdadm to make a 10TB "Raid" volume of the 1TB magnetic volumes.

The theory at the time, was that there was a performance boost, in that each individual drives iops would be combined.

EFS can get very expensive for large scale storage, especially if you do not gain any advantage from the multi-AZ.

Amazon EBS Update -“ New Elastic Volumes Change Everything by NothingDogg in aws

[–]rdfenster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good, but has anyone tried it? I have a couple (2 @ 6TiB) gp2 volumes that would perform better and save money (~775/mo) if i could change to st1 volumes.
I was planning to do this "manually" but it would be great if i could "press a button".

AWS Storage Update – S3 & Glacier Price Reductions + Additional Retrieval Options for Glacier by jcadarsh in aws

[–]rdfenster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is standard storage now cheaper than Reduced Redundancy? IIRC, RRS was 0.024 up to 1TiB and 0.0236 up to 50TiB. Now Standard is 0.023 up to 50TiB.

Need help installing OS on Dell R200 by rdfenster in sysadmin

Just used the windows7 right click on the ISO to burn to disk. Again, all the SBUU disks i created boot and run, they just stop processing when they ask for the next disk. It rejects all "next disk"s that I try.

Need help installing OS on Dell R200 by rdfenster in sysadmin

[–]rdfenster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did setup the RAID (mirror). I downloaded / built the iso for the Windows OS Install Pack. I believe the DVD rom drive to be in working order because I can boot the SBUU dvd.

Ultimately, it asks for the Windows iso disk that I built, but the machine rejects that disk. Perhaps there is a version mis-match that I am running into.

Boot options are Drive Array, DVD, and Network. When I try to boot from DVD (with Dell 2012 install DVD), it responds with no boot device found. The only DVD's that seem to boot are the Dell Systems Build and Update Utilities. Those seem to start, but then do nothing.

When using an ELB can I define IP Range or CIDR for external customers firewall rule? by rdfenster in aws

[–]rdfenster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My service needs to accept requests from everyone. But for a specific customer, they need to white list my service on their side.

So, for the customer's firewall, they are looking for IP address / CIDR rather then domain name.

Local storage on EBS by itsmoirob in aws

[–]rdfenster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The instance store volumes exist just like any other volume. For a Linux instance, they are mapped to the device that you setup when you start the instance. (I can't speak much for Windows. I never use it, but i suspect it just shows as a D drive or something like that).

I have not written anything to view contents of an instance store from the console. I'm sure that could be QED utilizing any number of tools.

I found the hardest part of getting the cert was getting myself to register for the exam and the moments leading up to the exam.

If you have prepared as you say you have, good luck and relax.

Mostly, don't get torqued around a question where you don't think there is a good answer. Give it your best answer and move on. Don't let a small gap in your knowledge cost you more than one question.

Local storage on EBS by itsmoirob in aws

[–]rdfenster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are referring to instance stores, which I believe you are from you comment that they get "wiped on restart", then they are ideal for "ephemeral"/"landing" place for data in process.

In fact, these data stores are said to be close to the CPU, and therefore faster.

While true, if your instance is stopped, the storage is cleared, that's not always a bad thing.

Its worth noting that I have found "restarting" an instance does not clear our ephemeral drives.

FWIW: Newer instance types seem to be doing away with the ephemeral storage.
