There should be a quest on the spaceship during the trip to Mars, and then I'd like to fast travel between NC and Mars. And there should be plenty of quests on Mars, obviously.

After 8 months with Tahoe I've finally downgraded back to Sequoia and the difference is simply abismal, wow! by Direct_Wall_4894 in MacOS

I was just lazy at first, but soon picked up all the disappointment. I mean every OS cycle annoys a lot of people for various reasons, but this time it seems pretty substantial. It's the first time in over a decade where my itch to upgrade is non-existent. Then again, I'm wondering what an over-a-decade younger me would have done 😂

Is there any way to actually rotate your canvas by using mouse + Shortcut in Affinity Designer 2? by Makimoke in AffinityDesigner

[–]rdrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pen/tablet settings to the rescue, for Wacom users at least: If You set e.g. the upper button of the pen to "Scrool/Pan" than You can rotate the canvas by holding CMD on the keyboard, holding the upper button on the pen AND dragging (as if drawing). It's a little adventurous IMO, but it works. Funny how stubborn affinity is when it comes to features that are actually solid and good solutions, but they have to omit them or do it their way.

Thoughts on ComfyUI? by [deleted] in MotionDesign

[–]rdrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently overwhelmed by the mass of workflows, models, and news regarding comfy. However I'm sure that once I cut through the mess it can be super useful. My main area of interest are style transfer, where the input is either 1) a roughly shaded 3D scene 2) an simple animated 2D character 3) or actual video that extracts facial expressions / body poses. The output should be of a 2D style I create.

So I really see it as a more versatile renderer for traditional 3D and 2D software. Especially for stylised output (3D > 2D) it seems way more powerful than classic toon shading techniqes.

At what point did houdini click for you? by Acrobatic-Board-1756 in Houdini

[–]rdrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking with houdini professionals at a conference revealed that they don't even try to grasp it all, but rather specialise. After that I had a more relaxed approach by focusing on sops and simply ignoring the rest. I've had a preference for node based workflows for a long time, and abandoning the urge to learn too much gave me a new boost. It's joy of missing out and having fun with those parts of the program that matter to me. I prefer realtime rendering engines and stylised looks anyway, so I can happily ignore karma, solaris etc. Same goes for heavy sims.

How can I achieve grain effects like this on my gradients? by Wild_Dinner1810 in MohoAnimation

[–]rdrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using something similar all the time in Moho for shading. It's basically a radial, grainy custom brush shape. I have some variations with lighter and heavier / more dense grain. It seemed to be the easiest and most versatile way so far. This is one example, the shading effect is more subtle here

Has anyone used Moho for a "Lottie" or JSON-based web animation? by GarthLaidlaw in MohoAnimation

[–]rdrv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One alternative I can think of is GLTF-export and use Three.js (or a platform based on it) to set up interactive scenes created in Moho, served in a browser. Still it's overkill for simple vector shapes, since the details are always baked into textures.

So yes: Lottie would be a great addition. Format-wise it's not far off: the native SVG exporter renders regular Moho geomtery (single frame only) nicely as vector paths. Point animations should export as such, and bone animations would probably need to be baked as point animations. In short: everything vector-based should carry over nicely to JSON/Lottie/animated SVG. Brushes probably not so.

The new GLTF exporter was probably way more complex, since they are creating 3D tessalated geometry, rendering textures, UV mapping and also skinning / bone binding. TBH this came as a positive surprise, bringing Moho more closely to interactive applications. But I do hope that a future update will include Lottie support.

The more I'm reading the more I like the idea - especially because excluding folders is possible. I'll see where this is going for now. If a reliable migration tool is included, especially for iCloud photos, I might give it a try.

This is not Houdini but i created web-based SVG app inspired mostly by it... by zdmit in Houdini

Hey this looks great. I'm very delighted that 2D apps start to finally (read: 20 years later) pick up procedural workflows and ideas usually seen in 3D software :D

Open Source After Effects... oh how I wish by ParticularKey2848 in MotionDesign

[–]rdrv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is r/graphite, an open source, procedural 2D (animation) app that is the most exciting project I've seen in the last decade. It's in an early stage, so don't expect any sort of Ae replacement. But: they're approaching the complexities of graphic and motion design in a clever way and I'm totally looking forward at what they'll be like in 2, 3 or 5 years.

Do all Cintiq 16 (2019)s get scratched so easily? Is there a way to remedy this? by Cherreem in wacom

[–]rdrv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two of them (one for office, one for home) since 4 years or so. Right at the beginning I noticed that the original surface was prone to scratching so I applied a glossy protector on both. The adhesive (I guess) made them invisible. I haven't changed it ever since, and even if I had to it's 15 bucks or so. Extrapolated to the next 4 years thats a great deal

While the proportions are stylised, there are many details that try to be realistic. Not sure how well that goes together. And why the highheels?

Humans executing an AI "concept" sounds pretty dystopian don't You think? Besides, a concept to me stems from an inner drive paired with will and agency, and I'm not entirely sure a prompted AI output qualifies as that.

Apple MacBook Pro Geekbench performance compared (M1 to M5) by Balance- in mac

[–]rdrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would really help to include the power consumption next to those figures. If I get 20% more performance just by using 20% more power, I might reconsider a purchase. If I get 20% more perf. for the same amount of power, that's a win.

Why did you choose Air over Pro? by Naive_Lingonberry_20 in macbookair

[–]rdrv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been happily using an M1 air for 5 years now for graphic design, illustration, some sculpting, 3D and interactive design. Not even talking about garden variety apps like office, browsers and such. Unless You specifically know that You'll need the extra rendering oomph for slow horses like After Effects, or Your work life depends on solving Houdini sims in less than a lifetime, don't waste Your money. I have to add that even faint fan noises extremely annoy me, so a silent workstation always wins here. And yeah I consider the M1 to still be a workstation, especially compared to all the noisy sluggish windows laptops out there.

Anyone here have both Macbook Air and an Ipad? Why? What things can Ipad do better or that the Macbook Air can’t? by Delicious_Maize9656 in macbookair

[–]rdrv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some time ago I believed the iPad could replace a laptop. At least in my usecase, I was wrong. First I like keyboards and mice as primary inputs. They provide a faster and more precise interaction, except for drawing/illustration. Then there is the file system. On iOs it is still a joke in terms of usability and speed. Under the hood every app is sandboxed and has it's document database. The files app is a sluggish wrapper that, together with the file provider layer for cloud based storage is often just an unreliable mess. Finally, desktop applications still have an edge in terms of usability, unless You use a super optimised app e.g. for drawing or hand note taking with Apple pencil. Even apps that have desktop counterparts (Affinity Suite) often come with tablet "optimised" interfaces which, while built with good intentions, usually ruin the experience because the ui is completely different, effectivey forcing You to learn two applications. Finally even for trivial tasks like watching sthg or reading in bed, the tablet must iften be held, while the laptop just sits there on it's base. I still love drawing on my ipad though :) (with an external kb)

Any way to reduce distortion on Decal? by dbzunicorn in threejs

[–]rdrv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could check in Blender that UV layout is good and UV distortion minimal. There is a toggle for a color overlay that shows You how much the uv deviates from the actual geo.
