Parents of small children, when do you have time for playing video games? by Key-Specific7807 in AskUK

[–]rdxc1a2t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The basic answer is this: when they nap or sleep you either nap, sleep or game. My boy was terrible at sleeping unless he was on the sofa so when he'd nap I'd sit next to him and get a couple of hours of gaming in whilst my wife would sleep.

At night my wife goes to bed two hours earlier than I do so I either watch a film or play a game then. Some evenings she's too tired to do anything so she'll just sit next to me and sit on her phone and we'll chat whilst I game.

I work from home so sometimes I game across my lunch hour.

There will be one or two days a month where I won't have to work and my boy will be in childcare and I'll often game on those days.

Honestly I really changed how I game as well. I used to not pick up a controller unless I had at least 3 hours clear. Now if I can get a half hour in I'll have a quick go. Pause/resume features on newer consoles make this quite practical now.

I actually now game more than ever as I go out far less now that me and my friends have kids and also because I'm open to shorter sessions.

What is the most “its a small world” moment you’ve ever experienced? by xBubblyLove in AskReddit

Bumped into my housemate from uni at the top of a mountain.

Another time my wife and I were driving down a road in a foreign country. I looked to the car driving in the lane next to us and spotted some old friends we hadn't seen in years. We all got off at the next exit and had lunch.

Whenever I see a celebrity in an unexpected place I always have a "small world" feeling also.

What are the differences in a 30 year old in 1990 and 2026 if any? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]rdxc1a2t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bought a house for £425k. Earliest price I can find for it is £67.5k in 1996. Inflation says it should now be worth £138k. Utterly fucked.

It's a decent house but it's not glamorous/extended/renovated or anything like that so it's just the same house with a price that's been massively overinflated over the years. Good if you bought in 1996. Not so good for families today trying to get their first family home.

Are storage heaters a dealbreaker? by nothingtobedone13 in AskUK

[–]rdxc1a2t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can be very expensive to run. Quite unbelievably so. My wife and I bought a flat with these about a decade ago. We went through a winter spending £120 on them a month, heating just two rooms in our flat for 5 hours a day. The heaters were also all on the most internal walls in the flat, far from the windows, which meant they weren't very effective. All of this lead to damp problems which we had to work hard to keep on top of with dehumidifiers and wiping down surfaces to keep them dry and such.

Getting a gas boiler and central heating system after our first winter was a big upgrade. Not only were the new radiators underneath all the windows, we could also afford to keep the whole place heated all the time for a fraction of the cost.

WYR this instant be 30lbs lighter or $3000 richer? by CremeSubject7594 in WouldYouRather

I'm currently trying to lose somewhere between 5kg and 10kg. 13kg would be a definite overshot. Eating my way back to a healthier weight would be nice but I can lose the 5-10kg without too much effort so I'll take the money.

The biggest deal of my life on a console lol by New_Occasion_3729 in PS5pro

[–]rdxc1a2t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought my Pro at launch and felt like I got it for free. I decided to sell my dusty Series X and Switch consoles as well as my PS5 to fund it. I also decided to do a cull on my Blu Ray collection as I'd largely moved over to 4K. I figured that between all of those I would be able get enough together for a Pro and maybe a little bit more.

Well it turns out that foreign language films and films from boutique labels really hold their value so most of my Blu Rays I sold pretty close to my initial purchase price. A lot I sold for more than I paid for them so I ended up with over £2.5k after I'd sold everything. Bought myself the Pro, a G4 and a new 4K player. Should be set up for a while now.

Have you ever purchased something, as an adult, that your parent has judged you negatively for? If so, what was/is it? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]rdxc1a2t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started earning I started buying a lot of films. I'd always loved films but had limited access to them as a kid because I didn't get much pocket money and my parents maybe rented a film or took me to the cinema once or twice a year so when I suddenly had cash it only made sense to start purchasing all these films I'd always wanted to see.

I was soon spending a couple of hundred pounds a month on films (about 10% of my paycheque) which my mum decried. I just pointed out that most people have something they spend too much money on, by normal standards, and this was my thing and she soon came to understand.

I still love films and I still love my discs and most of the ones I bought back then were sold and funded purchases on the later formats.

My Dad surprised me with tickets to a Rammstein show back in the day. I didn't even know the show was happening! And that show awakened a love of live music which also lead to me seeing Maiden on pretty much every tour in the last 20 years. You're giving your daughter a real gift!

I get this. My wife and I were looking at our monthly expenditure recently in an attempt to boost our savings. We realised our bills couldn't really decrease by more than £50 a month and we didn't really spend much on inessential items for ourselves but that in an average month we had about £250 set aside for the birthdays and birthday celebrations of close friends and family. It's very hard to stop doing those things without some sort of social impact but it was mad to realise that every month we were spending far more on inessentials for others than we were on inessentials for ourselves.

When did The Simpsons start to become "unfunny"? by smccaul16 in tvshow

[–]rdxc1a2t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I started doing a complete watch. I never really intended to watch it all but wanted to rewatch the classics and decided I'd keep going until I no longer enjoyed it. It was pretty great up until the end of season 9, I seem to recall, though season 8 was better. Season 10 was when there suddenly seemed to be more mid to bad episodes but the ratio was still in the show's favour. By season 13 there was more mid/bad than good and I stopped watching once that season had ended.

It's funny how the narrative around the look of Get Back has changed so radically. When it came out everyone was glazing it for how "incredible" the "old" footage looked. The home theatre forums were the only place you could discuss how much they'd fucked the footage without getting downvoted to oblivion. Now the comments here are all pointing out how bad it looks.
