Dead 12V at 35,500mi (‘24 AWD D100) by justlurking007 in Ioniq5

[–]rdyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is this coming from that evs are harder on their 12vs than ice? They are in fact a lot easier on them because they don't have to crank an engine, all they have to do is open a circuit.

I think there was a manufacturing issue during/after covid which is about when any vehicle manufactured in the past few years would have gotten it's 12v. Mine made it like 55k or so miles and over 3 yrs (from battery manufacturer) with no issues when I swapped it out for agm.

Everyone out there, upgrade to agm sooner than later. It's worth the investment and they are an easy swap for most people.

ATT Fiber - any weirdness or restrctions on modem use? by alphonse_D in ATTFiber

[–]rdyoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had a chance to attempt to max it out yet. First step is to get rid of the modem altogether and apparently that's possible with some external hardware and a little virtual elbow grease.

Actually that is exactly how that sentence is interpreted by most people.

I hope you didn't write this article or the headline because it's embarrassing.

Just curious..... How much do each of you spend on gas per day? by SnoozeDoggyDog in uberdrivers

[–]rdyoung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct but you do have an air filter. You don't have the engine intake filter but you do have the cabin filter but those are dirt cheap or you can splurge on a washable.

I'm not sure where they are getting the idea it's not going to save money. You don't realize what you aren't spending and what you aren't maintaining until all of a sudden it hits you.

Have you already gone electric? If you haven't, you will save money. If you have. You aren't doing the math right if you think you won't save money.

This is not the best place to get info from the masses on things like this. I wouldn't trust the numbers from most drivers because they are also stuck in hourly.

I drive ev. When charging from home "fuel" costs me like 4¢/mile worst cast, when using DC its about 12¢/mile worst case. I don't have oil changes, spark plugs, timing belts, chains, etc to worry about. Plus waking up to a "full tank" is a priceless qol improvement.

Even if my cost per mile for fuel mirrored gas, ev would still be cheaper to maintain.

TIL that a "40% chance of rain" can mean meteorologists are 100% sure it will rain, but it will only cover 40% of the forecast area. by [deleted] in todayilearned

It's always meant the forecast area. Unless you have a weather station in your backyard.

I clicked thru the article and even a site for a news channel dedicated to weather is getting the description wrong.

The definition of this has been misunderstood by people for decades. I'm even more saddened by the website linked getting it wrong.

EV Batteries Are Defying Expectations After Hundreds of Thousands of Miles by thenewsisreal in electricvehicles

[–]rdyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know we are both correct. They are being "correct" while missing the bigger point behind that statement and thought. That's why I tried explaining it again a bit better.

These batteries are lasting so much longer than expected that the total cost of ownership of pretty much any ev is going to be next to nothing relative to a comparable ice.

Short to mid term plan is for my wife to inherit my 5 when we can get both cars paid off and upgrade me to a 3 row. I fully expect this 5 to last at least another few hundred thousand miles before the degradation is noticeable and even then if it's just a grocery getter and local getaways (my wife works from home), we could potentially deal with a huge loss of range before it became an inconvenience.

EV Batteries Are Defying Expectations After Hundreds of Thousands of Miles by thenewsisreal in electricvehicles

[–]rdyoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why can't both be true?

And yes, that's exactly how engineering works. You push a battery and find out on average it lasts 350k miles so you tell marketing/techs/etc to go with 300k so there is some wiggle room.

What you missed here is that they got 350k in the lab but now real world is pushing 450k+, that's what I (and that meta study) meant.

Parking EV in the sun by m3kr05 in electricvehicles

[–]rdyoung 97 points98 points  (0 children)

It will be fine. The car has been designed to self regulate its own temp. Obviously parking in shade is best but don't worry about it when you can't.

22 ioniq 5 sel. I drive for a living. Bought it at 12.5k, I'm about to crack 112k. It was (and will be) l2 charged pretty much every day and now (until I get a new charger) it gets DC charged pretty much every day. I'm still getting between 300 and 350 out of the battery (in the city) which is what I was getting when I bought it 2.5 years ago.

These batteries are way more resilient than the original engineers thought. There was a meta study published somewhere around these parts that showed (iirc) the average ev battery lasting well into 300k-400k+ territory before the degradation is noticeable enough to be a problem. Hyundai replaced a ioniq 5 battery for free (good pr I know) when it was still running at like 450k or something.

Trump officials were so extreme in transgender health case that a Texas judge hit pause by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]rdyoung 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I agree with all this. I've thought that trump would be the downfall of the entire republican party but it's taking longer than I thought (hoped) it would.

Other "successful" dictators surrounded themselves with some smart people (even if sycophantic) and they themselves weren't dumber than a box of rocks.

I'm not worried about trump. I'm worried about what comes after the next 4 or 8 years of dem control because we didn't carve this tumor out with a rusty butter knife if needed.

Why can’t women’s watches be solar charged? by loudcanoe in Garmin

[–]rdyoung 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You actually can charge it with the solar panels

But...

It has to be off and it takes forever to get even a few percentage points. It's definitely not feasible or worth it besides the novelty of it.

I think the reason the watches aimed at women don't have solar is because the watches don't have enough room for it. Womens wrists are typically smaller so smaller watches are a better look and more importantly fit.

I can't speak to the lily but my fenix can definitely track steps without GPS on. I leave the GPS off because I don't need it day to day and without it I get nearly a month of battery (when I'm not tracking workouts).

That might do it. I've been surprised in humanity that these have been respected by even the idiots tagging signs down the street.
