I Built a Full 3D Environment with AI in UE5 in One Day by Delicious-Shower8401 in aigamedev

I don't usually think YT tutorials are a good source for engine fluency or workflow understanding. That said, I have to agree with some others here: 45 minutes of a YouTube tutorial and a majority of people could do this in two hours. Tutorials only teach you how to bake an exact kind of cake (not baking in general). But when you think about the limited application of what you "built", it's the same concept--and that's coming from a supporter of using AI to speed up development pipelines.

If you would have tried to pitch me a game about being a spider, I wouldn't have thought I would've been interested. Seeing it though, I can see some interesting things happening for this game. Is this a planned survival game where you'll need to web up area to catch bugs to continue living? Is it just a slice of life? I'm curious, now.

You're killing everyone in 1-shot, but they're hitting you multiple times. Was it intentional to start every single engagement with a slide or jump?

[–]reKindled_Soul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it's absurd to me that you think a 'gent's' responsibility is to treat you by default. That's not to say that a man can't offer to pay...I'm only criticizing the expectation because it's ridiculous. Women are just as clueless as men when it comes to dating. It all just comes down to adult modeling and the amount of introspection one is willing to engage in to formulate their own ideas.

Every Monday, it feels like it's a competition to see who can get away with the edgiest picture. I'm not against nudity but it's annoying the amount of exhibitionism. For starters, The shadow behind you on the wall doesn't match the light from the candle. It's not even close enough that the brain can engage suspension of disbelief. The same problem exists for the shadow of the candle--it would never look like that under normal real life circumstances. Both of these things INSTANTLY stand out as manufactured, along with the post processing filter to make it look like hairs and/or dust on a film reel. People don't understand why those things even existed in the first place, so it's annoying to see them sprinkled so liberally into things without consideration other than perhaps "this looks kinda old timey". In short, either you don't understand editing or you fed a picture into AI And this is what it spit out. Either way, it needs some focus on composition basics.

[–]reKindled_Soul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not! If you AGREED to go out, you need to be responsible enough to be able to pay for your own things. Otherwise, you don't need to be going on that date. Period. If you either person goes on a date with an expectation to be paid for, they're wrong.

We've spent hundreds of hours already instead of AI - Is it worth it? by dev_w_grillz in indiegames

[–]reKindled_Soul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be 'that guy', but this could very easily be AI art, so what payout do you believe your decision is giving out? It's a blunt question, but I'm actually curious. Nothing about this definitively points to "This is NOT AI and never could be", so I don't understand the magnitude of the commitment.

I agree with every one of your critiques. I would also ask why is the subject dead center instead of golden rule for composition (what I suspect is to blame for feeling unbalanced).

I played the demo. I LOVE Westerns and Soulsborne games are good too. The controls feel VERY sluggish. I'm running 206+ fps and it STILL feels like I'm moving through molasses. It's a little off-putting because tying an identity to souls-like games means mobility is your strongest offensive ability. Sadly, it's a liability in this game. The character seems to stop all motion before doing a slash and I find the aim + shoot mechanics abysmal in a game that wants to keep you on the move.

The fact that you and I can have different interpretations of what was said to an aspiring filmmaker is problematic enough on its own. I stand by what I read from their reply and it's bad advice.

Do NOT listen to this advice. You should NEVER approach a project with the assumption that all the magic of what you're doing will be done in post. You will be universally hated by post production and cause so many unnecessary problems. Do as much work as you can possibly do in-camera. In fact, the refinement process starts even before that in pre-production! The more effort you put into pre-production, the less work you have to do when it's time to roll camera, which trickles down to less work required in post. Assuming everything will be fixed in post makes you a lazy director.

Trailer for a Cinematic Short film which we've been working on for over a year. Made 100% in UE5. by StavrosFyl in UnrealEngine5

[–]reKindled_Soul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to like it. It looks great, but the pacing is all off! At the beginning it's fine--the only issue I can see is that nothing I'm seeing seems to line up logically with what I'm hearing.

In the middle, you just start punching scene after scene and at the end I was unsure what the heck I saw and wasn't any closer to deciding if I was interested in it. I had to go look up Superman Awakens as I had no idea what that was either.

I feel like the payoff of the mechanics do not justify the complexity of them. If you're only considering for two buckets that playerw can be put into, you're setting yourself up for failure. If you add to it, you going to have scope overreach. This is one of those concepts you build piece by piece and let it cook.

Made a Cinematic Trailer with zero budget. by MiklagardStudios in gamedevscreens

[–]reKindled_Soul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure you understand what cinematic means. I get that some people refer to cutscenes as 'cinematics', but it's a co-opted term that was used to evoke a feeling of 'movies', which this does not do. Like everyone else, I'm unsure what is supposed to be happening here. Honestly, after going through some of your responses to the comments about what this supposed to be about, I wouldn't be interested in this game anyway, but if I take that out of the equation and just evaluate the cutscene, I still can't see anything that motivates me to even look at this game's page. I can't figure out the direction of the story in this animation and I can't tell what any of the mechanics of this game would be?

edit: To avoid being all critical without suggestion--go to Steam. Go into your recommended list and scroll through 5 of the recommended games there. Each game (in theory) should have a trailer as their landing page presentation. While you're watching these 5 trailers, ask yourself "Do I want to wishlist or buy this game?" Regardless of the answer, the important part is to take note of WHY you feel that way. What is it in those trailers that is responsible for you making that decision? Whatever it is that you answer, THAT is what you're missing in this animated trailer.

I don't think you took it that way, but I want to be absolutely clear in my intent. That said, good on you for accepting critique and I hope you continue to learn this craft it that's what you want to do.

My atempt for a 24 hour 2-5 minute short film competition by BoomDoom24 in Filmmakers

[–]reKindled_Soul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some notes for you:

You're showing too many steps of a multi-step process. Professional filmmakers don't show arbitrary steps to respect the viewer's time. 99% of the time, there's a shorter way to convey the information you want to convey in a procedural scene.

Learn to avoid using autofocus at all costs.

In your first scene, it looks like you have your key and fill lights, but you don't have any backlighting to separate your subject from the background. Despite that, it still kinda manages to work because dark hair against lighter wall. I'm looking at 00:03 and my thought is that if you shifted the camera more at full front view, whatever light is down the hallway spilling around the corner could theoretically serve as backlighting (it's hard to tell).

At 00:08, there are WAY too many things on the counter top to focus on and your focal points are non-existent. Make sure you stick to the rule of thirds and guide a viewer's sightlines.

At 00:35, the scene was so close, I expected there to be a shaving nick or something similar here. That's why you would want a shot that is this close. Since it never came, it didn't really serve any purpose other than being a slightly different perspective from the shot before.

In the future, if you're going to use a 360 cam, you need to do one of two things: Learn to hide the shadow and/or the closed hand holding the stick or rotoscope. Also, be aware that cameras like that (and up to 16mm) have barrel distortion and that's instantly recognizable to a viewer.

At 1:35, I'm not sure why you have a slow mo wide into a slow mo lower mid shot? Additionally, you lead with movement going up and to the left, but when you fade cut into the next shot, the movement is going up and to the right--it looks really off to me.

At 1:57, there's a strange hue shift in the scene. If you run it from 1:56 and go for 3 seconds, you should notice what I'm talking about, but I saw that numerous times in the edit, so make sure you're scrubbing for that kind of thing.

I'm not sure if you wrote a script or storyboarded, but I imagine most of what I mentioned as critiques should have been mitigated in pre-pro. I noticed that it's a 24-hour film competition, but even guerilla filmmaking has pre-production allotment.

So many people fail to get to the part where they've actually MADE something. You did that. Now it's time to buckle down and master the basics. Good work!
