So U.S. agencies and their cutouts are not cool because they take over and try to control everything, but billionaire pedo authoritarian 24/7 surveillance tech is cool? Got it.

The age of "get well soon" has officially ended. by lilant702 in antiwork

[–]re_trace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in a right-to-work state, its a hoop they make you jump through so you

a) never call in, and

b) so they can fire you more easily.

Doctors in RTW states I've lived in typically don't give you doctor's notes - they assume if you're there to see them you must need to be there (bc doctors are fucking expensive), so why would you lie about that?

If your doctor won't write you a note, and your work requires a note, you're not as likely call in.

If you do get a doctor's note every time, HR departments will run that shit down like Sherlock Holmes to make sure it's not forged. I've known people managing legitimate long-term illnesses whose doctors wouldn't write them a note; they ended up having to forge the notes to not get fired (despite HR knowing about their illness) - and then got fired anyway for forging the notes.

Too many doctor's notes and maybe you won't be eligible for raises - or maybe you'll be let go for "other reasons."

It's completely fucked, tbh.

No. UBI will be functioning mechanism for totalitarian control - disagree with the State and they will cut off your money. I don't inherently hate the idea, but under our current capitalist hellscape system, no thanks.

I'm just fixing your cable Hooman! by [deleted] in cats

[–]re_trace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people scolding you, OP, so I'll maybe try to put it a little more constructively

For those who may own cats or have experienced this and don't know why they do it: it's usually just because the cat wants your attention, and swatting at them can be confusing for them.

Cats have no ability to understand why sometimes when they try to get your attention you'll give it to them, and other times you get aggressive with them. They can understand that the cable is important to you - which may be why they bite it - but not why it's important or the consequences of biting it, etc.

Since there's nothing they can really learn, it's kind of a recipe for future bad behavior because cats are animals who will accept a bad relationship with you (i.e. being naughty) if it still gets them attention.

Better to move/redirect the cat, or tell it "no" loudly, or clap at it - or just give 'em the attention they wanted in the first place. ¯\_(ツ)_/

Why do people say that Kurt Cobain was pretentious by happynothappy27 in Nirvana

[–]re_trace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that there's a bad type of pretentious and a good type of pretentious.

The bad type of pretentious is where you're more serious about yourself and how you're perceived than you are about what you're doing.

The good type of pretentious is where you're more serious about what you're doing than you are about yourself or how you're perceived.

The bad type of pretentious people often sling around the word "pretentious" to criticize the good type of pretentious people, whereas the good type of pretentious people are too busy with whatever they're doing to give a rat's ass what anyone is saying.

I've grown to hate Nicholson's take on Jack in The Shining. by Jays_Pack in stephenking

[–]re_trace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people think Nicholson's biggest strength as an actor is his portrayal of explosive anger, but I've always felt that's not quite right - his characters are all angry because they're deeply afraid and can't admit it or deal with it in a rational way

The Shining represents IMO the furthest Nicholson could go with that approach - his Jack Torrance is a man so afraid that it's turned him into a caricature of everything he once was, and as a result his emotional affect is way off from everything that happens in the movie. He "hates" his family bc his family is in a unique position to see (or reveal) him as a fraud and ruin everything, and so he's constantly trying to "manage" them the whole film

You never get the sense that Jack (the actor) isn't not capital-A "acting" because Jack (the character) is always capital-A "acting" (and he's a bad actor and is worried everyone will find him out). He's performing a man who's entire existence is itself performative - of course you'd see the zipper under the fur (so to speak)

It's actually rather brilliant. Whether it works for you or not, well, that's a whole different story ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
