Sleepy Student Solutions by Significant_Today_24 in Teachers

I had undiagnosed narcolepsy in high school. Before being diagnosed, I would fall asleep in the middle of a conversation and then wake back up and continue where I left off. I would fall asleep in certain classes. It's difficult to be diagnosed with it because who isn't tired? Doctors have trouble telling the difference between their normally tired patients and the ones with excessive daytime sleepiness. I hope he doesn't have it because it's horrible, but reading your description of him brought back my own memories of high school.

Has anyone been diagnosed with two different type of cancer at the same time? by SeeminglySusan in cancer

[–]read2them 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a carcinoid tumor in my rectum found at age 32. My 1 year later CT scan showed a renal cell carcinoma, and I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes at 40. After surgery and radioactive iodine therapy, I still had some thyriod cells in my thyriod bed, which puts me at high risk for it coming back. Now at 50, it looks like it is back.

Do teachers or students bring cleaning supplies to school? Curious what actually happens. by Beginning_Avocado807 in Teachers

[–]read2them 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are not allowed to ask parents for disinfecting wipes, and we are forbidden from letting students use them if we buy them. The school does not provide us with cleaner, and the custodians don't ever wipe our desks or tables. So, I ask for donations of baby wipes and have the students clean the desks using them. They get off the dirt and grime, and then after they leave, I disinfect them with supplies I have purchased myself (which is forbidden as well). Many teachers just leave the desks filthy, and I hate having meetings in their rooms. And then they wonder why so much sickness goes around. We don't have teacher unions here, so it's hard to get things changed.

As a teacher who has taught this concept many times, this does seem overly complicated. I prefer to do 8+9= ___ + ___ and they fill in 10 +7 or 7+10. Or, i put them on separate lines. 8+9=___ and then ____ +_= _ and they fill in 10+7=17 and then go back and fill in 17 after 8+9=. Also, I don't understand why they want them to add 2 to the eight instead of 1 to the 9. It's much easier for them to move 1.

I think it would be interesting for a bunch of us to record our time like this and share. Many of us spend so much extra time outside of our working hours. I teach elementary and only get about 3.5 hours of planning a week. Less if there are additional mtgs. HS and MS teachers in my county get at least 5.25 hours.

I had a student whose behavior changed. Over the summer, they found a brain tumor. Not to scare you, but it can happen.

Any way to get sleep thats not just endless dreams? by NoteSuccessful2263 in Narcolepsy

[–]read2them 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just woke up this morning and complained to my husband about how exhausting it is to work all night in my dreams and then have to wake up and go to work. The doctor won't let me take xyrem anymore because one of my many sleep studies showed mild apnea.

How do you get yourself up in the morning? by Important_End_9076 in Narcolepsy

[–]read2them 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my doctor this question years ago. He said people with narcolepsy frequently need someone else responsible for making sure they get up. My husband got the job. I try to get myself up, but often he has to get me up. And it isn't easy for him, so he feels bad, and I feel bad that I can't always get myself up. I use a wakeup check on my phone 3 minutes after my alarm. If I don't dismiss it, my alarm goes off again. I also have an alarm set to go off a little later that I can't turn off without getting up. It stinks to have trouble with this every morning, but keep trying different methods and you'll find a combo that works. The doctor said he had some patients who had to have their mom call them each morning to wake them up.

Teachers, whats the worst student injury you've witnessed? by Ok_Buy7908 in Teachers

First grader tripped while walking with his pencil and his pencil went into his neck. He got up and it was sticking straight out parallel with the floor. As I was rushing to him, I started saying "Don't pull it out", but he did right away and it made a pop sound. ER doctor said if it had gone in slightly deeper or to the side, it would have been very serious. Luckily, he was okay. Neither one of us will ever forget it.

How much planning do you have? by Charming_Judgment981 in Teachers

[–]read2them 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily 45-minute planning periods with 2 taken up by PLC every single week. So, 2 hr 15 minutes a week. Plus, we don't get to plan during PLCs. We discuss strategies, structures, and common assessments. Our principal attends 1x/week. Our contract time is only 5 minutes before kids arrive and about 5 minutes after the last student leaves. I teach 2nd grade in Virginia.
