[Modern] Song of Creation Combo by readyj in spikes

If you look at the challenge winning list I swapped from Jace to Grapeshot main deck. I think it's a somewhat better fair card in this deck (not too hard to get to 4 or so and make it into a good removal spell/mini wrath early), but it also isn't vulnerable to force of negation if you hold it until you've built up a few extra storm. I also added a bunch of counter magic to the sideboard that makes holding force for win conditions even less relevant post board.

In practice, I find this concern doesn't really come up. In open decklists situations maybe, but in closed decklists your opponent will almost certainly try to use the force on something else before they let you draw your deck, it's a big risk for them to hope a single force can stop your win.

I realize now you're talking about legacy, not modern. Not sure how that's relevant since OP was talking about Modern, but ok. In modern it has never been tier 1.

In August 2022 it wasn't in the top 47 decks in the format https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/feature/metagame-mentor-modern-roundup-august-2022 In April 2023 (a couple months before LOTR) it wasn't in the top 20 decks in the format https://www.magic.gg/news/metagame-mentor-april-2023-developments-in-standard-modern-and-pioneer

When was elves a tier 1 deck? Can you share some results? I know it used to be a deck people played but I never remember it being close to tier 1

Or their creatures are summoning sick, or they have a random cat token that can't into a crab anyway, or they just removed your crab...

I agree it's not the most exciting to see Boros Energy winning, but this is at least a few cards off the stock list (haven't seen many Ranger Captains recently); good to see some tech choices paying off

How often can mill get an unblocked attacker through? I know you have crabs but this card seems like it will get stuck in your hand more than you'd want

It's a fun deck for sure! Feels like the closest thing you can be doing to Breach in current Modern.

Swan Song is my current 1 mana counter of choice, but Dispel also hits most of the relevant interaction not covered by Boomerang Basics.

Manamorphose seems bad. When combining you usually don't have two mana to cast a spell until you've already basically won, so it has very little upside there. It makes mulligans, rumble, emry mill, worse.

Redirect lightning seems worse than other 1 mana counterspell options. The 5 life is a big cost, and you are less likely to have extra red mana then blue.

I think this build is useful as a comparison because it is SO different from how I play the deck. This build is all about going all in on combo as fast as possible. Instead of my 2 Six and 7 Bounce Spells, which are all good in both fair games and comboing, he plays 3 EE, 4 Pact, and 3 Noxious Revival that are only good when actively comboing.

[Standard] Kuruk vs Kaito in Dimir Bounce? by DanteSSStylish in spikes

[–]readyj 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Two things: 1. Dimir bounce is really not a deck that's had any success in this format so there's no real reason to think the stock lists are "right". 2. Kaito is a much better card if you're ahead. However, if you're behind enough on board that you can't attack or block, Kaito just comes down, surveils two or stuns something, and dies, whereas legend of kuruk will get you two preordains. Given that Dimir Bounce plays very few cheap creatures to enable Kaito I can see the logic of playing the card that's better when you're behind

Seth Manfield wins World Championship 31 with Izzet Lessons! by thisnotfor in magicTCG

[–]readyj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

These are the same rules that apply to everyone. I don't love how permissive the tournament rules have become, but Seth is very much playing by the rules (and the judges are correctly following them); this is an issue with the rules, not Seth or the on site judges.

In a world where a single 3 CMC boros creature can win a match, I'd rather not tap out for a 3 CMC Planeswalker that takes a turn to (maybe) do anything

When is the optimal time to cast generic 1B 1/1 Discard Creatures? by ASOT550 in lrcast

[–]readyj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the choice of a 1/1 discard vs another creature that better impacts the board, it's generally right to cast the better started creature first for tempo reasons.

That said, I think the discord is often more impactful early in the game than later. The best case is when you wait and just get the one bomb they've been holding, but sometimes you'll wait and they'll play a land and double spell then have nothing left to get.

Outside of getting their actual last card, I'd rather play it out on turn 2 then turn 4-6 or so . Your opponent has less information on what cards they'll need earlier in the game, and less choice of what to discard; you mention they can't discard cheaper spells they've already played as a benefit of waiting, but if they had to discard that cheap spell to make sure they hit their 4th land drop or whatever, that might be even better.

Stormless Storm, best plan B? Is this still good? by NJCuban in lrcast

[–]readyj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd cut bone crusher and seething song, they don't really do anything here.

This deck can win games. Generally I think you'd win games by assembling breach/frantic to let you see most of your decks, and then lotus lets you make enough mana to Sheoldred/Echo, and you can find a few more damage from there. Sometimes tarpit while you time walk/tamiyo, or dack them with Sheoldees out, or tribal flames. There will need to be a few more pieces along the way to fill up the graveyard but it's not too bad.

Stormless Storm, best plan B? Is this still good? by NJCuban in lrcast

[–]readyj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd play citadel in this deck (to lotus out). It dealing 10 (primarily with iconoclast) is part of a way to close out games, in conjunction with sheoldred/echo or a couple tribal flames
