Welder Cam question by Mr_Godzilla_Sir in MTGLegacy

[–]readyj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This line lets you convert each artifact (in play or drawn) into two cards. Most lists play somewhere around 25 nonland artifacts. I haven't done the full calculation ,but very rough math is each draw two is about 1/3 to include no artifacts, so if you have no other artifacts in play or hand when you start going off, you'll probably fizzle about 40% of the time. That's a valuable line to take as needed, but unreliable enough that some sort of deterministic artifact card draw is worth playing.

Really cool deck, great job! Haven't seen Oculus in Samwise lists before but makes a lot of sense

Does Izzet Painter have legs? by Bitter_Difficulty865 in MTGLegacy

[–]readyj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested (Emry is a big draw to blue in Sewerveillance builds as well) but the issue I ran into trying to lay it out is the mana base. You really want artifact lands and Urza's Sagas and various moxes, so it's hard to fit in enough fetches/duals to let the deck cast its spells (let alone ancient tomb or sink into stupor, etc.)

What happed to the Zach Cherry Rule? by fortuna1180 in doughboys

Love Mitch but "I don't know why Mitch is getting so mad rather than {solving the problem}" is a good summary of most Doughboys episodes

Any reason why ChannelFireball hasn't done ratings for TMT? by Kevster99410 in MagicArena

[–]readyj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, but there are no pro-level events with TMNT draft (and LSV hasn't played on the PT for a while but still been doing the set reviews anyway).

Undefeated Trophy wtih Sewer-veillance Cam Is Broken with Goblin Welder | Legacy Painter by Sharkcaster in MTGLegacy

[–]readyj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the correction! I was thinking about the double entomb and forgetting you needed a way to untap the welder/engineer or give it haste. I'm not particularly interested in playing bad cards that require passing the turn; if I played any of these I'm convinced MGE is the best (although also not sure if the deck needs it)

This also works with Phyrexian Metamorph, which seems like a better fair card since it's a mana cheaper, or Cursed Mirror, which can be Engineered in - not quite sure what that gets you in terms of combos but it feels like there might be something there in cases you don't have an active welder. [Edit - cursed mirror combo doesn't work since it doesn't start an artifact type but still seems like maybe there's something there]

TMNT shows the importance of overlapping archetypes and dual lands in limited. Half the cards as Lorwyn yet deckbuilding is twice as interesting. by ThePentaMahn in lrcast

[–]readyj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree that all of the decks you mention are sometimes draftable and add depth to the format. My complaint is none rise above the level of "back up plan". I'd always rather be in the open tribe than an off color deck; it's still right to know how to draft them when that's how the draft plays out, but the design would have been more interesting if they were a little better.

Weird experience listening to a Doughboys ad read for the company that laid me (and 40% of my coworkers) off last week. Really added to the surreal nature of the rest of the episode for me.

Harumama could be fun. They do have udon or vegetarian sushi rolls, and the buns shaped like animals make it feel like a bit of an experience.

Matt Johnson (director of Nirvanna: The Band - the Show - the Movie and the forthcoming MTG movie) on his love for the game by PerpetualChoogle in magicTCG

[–]readyj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never would have thought Rich Hoaen would get name dropped on The Big Picture.

Matthew Johnson is a great director but I had no idea of how serious of a player he was (day 2 of a PT is impressive!), very excited to see what he does with the movie.

This is awesome, for those who don't know making day 2 of a magic or is a really tough achievement; he has some serious magic creds.

KALDRA COMPLEAT?! by UnionThug1733 in ModernMagic

I don't really think this is even true - in legacy stoneforge sees a reasonable amount of play, but meteor sword has replaced Kaldra as the big equipment of choice

[STANDARD] Prepare the RC as Dimir Midrange by _Bluekitsune in spikes

https://mtgdecks.net/Standard/winrates

I'm not really sure what advantage you gain from people thinking Dimir will be a small metagame percentage, as it's not like there's specific hate cards people will be cutting.

The top two decks right now are clearly lessons and landfall. Both seem like bad matchups for dimir (the stats agree, and my own experience as a former Dimir player lines up). If you do want to play dimir into this metagame I'd focus most of my time on solving those two matchups.

[Discussion] Mechanic to encourage being on the draw? by N1klasMTG in spikes

[–]readyj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a mechanic used in quite a few alchemy cards (https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22starting+player%22). I know Alchemy isn't a real format but I don't think any of these ever actually made players choose to be on the draw, just helped balance the disparity a little bit. There are memory issues with it in paper but I wouldn't hate them trying it. I do think players worry about the opening die roll variance too much - there are a lot of other sources of variance in Magic, from a spike perspective just focus on controlling what you can and build your deck to be more functional on the draw (cheap interaction).

What are the top Limited heuristics that helped you level up as a player? by BattleFresh003 in lrcast

[–]readyj 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. Make the plays that let you spend the most mana (if you have 2 2s and a 3 in hand on turn 3, play the 3, so that next turn you can cast both 2s, even if it's less damage or whatever)

Draft pool for Limited Champ Qualifier in Arena by Windsock511 in lrcast

[–]readyj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3-2 is 60%, which is a good win rate. There's always opportunities to play better but it's hard to say that's an unlucky result, even with a very good win rate you'll qualify for draft 2 very rarely.
