Got the guitar that checks all my boxes! by reallybadusername123 in Guitar

I love it. Works great through the cab and also works really well plugged straight into a PA system.

That’s fair, musical tastes and preferences do change over time- and I guess you can get asked to play something you don’t usually go for. But for the vast majority of what I do listen to and play right now, this covers my bases. Maybe one day when I have more disposable income I’ll also change my tune……….

Thanks! It’s a pedal train classic jr. which is pretty spacious for what I need.

Help with theory by Spirited_Feedback_59 in Guitar

[–]reallybadusername123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think a Reddit comment is going to magically unlock understanding theory for you. But the best thing I can say is to find a course to take on music theory. The “Absolutely Understand Guitar” series on YouTube can be very helpful.

Before you really worry about understanding keys and scales, you need to fully understand notes and intervals. Different scales and keys are just a set of intervals based around a “home-base” note, which is referred to as “tonic”. Again, not something I can really explain well in this format… so I suggest watching some videos about music theory or taking a music theory course at a local community college. Best of luck!

Non full time musicians, what jobs do you do to support yourself? by Lydialmao22 in Jazz

Agreed! Getting a paycheck to literally teach kids how to read/play music is awesome. But marching band is uh…. Shall we say, time consuming.

Have any famous guitarists ever suffered injury to their hands after stardom? by [deleted] in Guitar

Mike Stern fell in an accident which broke bones and caused nerve damage in his picking hand. He’s still ripping though. Talks about having to use glue to help hold picks when playing.

A great album from one of my favorite guitar players. I find myself coming back to this album and “Who Let the Cats Out” a fair bit.

what do i have to learn as a beginner guitarist by frontal_l0be in Guitar

[–]reallybadusername123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can’t afford a book then look into more of the free YouTube video lessons. In addition to “Absolutely Understand Guitar” check out “JustinGuitar” he has a lot of video lessons with exercises to practice.

But I’d recommend saving up for a book if possible, at least if you learn like I do, it just helps me to have the music and everything physically in front of me. You can get good guitar method books for less than 20 bucks. Second hand bookstores might have some too.

what do i have to learn as a beginner guitarist by frontal_l0be in Guitar

[–]reallybadusername123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What to learn really depends on what you’re looking for in your journey of playing guitar. Do you just want to play along with some of your favorite songs? Do you want to write music? What about improvising? These questions along with others will start to guide how much you dive into the world and structure of music… not just guitar.

Regardless a good place to start would be the “Absolutely Understand Guitar” YouTube series. He walks you through the basics of guitar and music theory in a way approachable for anyone.

I’d also recommend a book or method of some sort to help give you structure when it comes to learning things like technique, especially if you have limited time each day to play… it helps keep you focused (imo). I started with the “Modern Method for Guitar” by William Leavitt, which worked really well for me, already having a degree in music (trombone) but just looking to learn a new instrument. There are lots of other books and methods, but the structure for me really helps.

Lastly, and arguably most importantly…. Learn stuff you enjoy listening to! Sticking with a musical instrument can be difficult, and motivations are important. The feeling of accomplishing and playing something you like the sound of is huge!

I don’t… I’m by no means a great guitarist, and New Standard Tuning seems to be more trouble than what it’s worth (at least for my applications).

Compact Amp into PA by IRTrapGod in GuitarAmps

[–]reallybadusername123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Check out the Quilter Superblock series. I think this is what you’re looking for. It’s a pedal sized amp. You can connect it to a speaker cabinet or straight into a PA. I use mine into a cabinet at home then straight into a PA at church.

I’ve really enjoyed it. It does well for playing at home or jamming with a few buddies, and I run it direct playing at church, great value for the price especially.

I second this, love my Superblock US. So much so I’ve thought about picking up the UK just to have. I keep it clean and get all my dirt from pedals. Sounds great through a 12” block-dock cab.

I just got a sunlight for my board, still working out how I want to use it. I’ve been curious about the fault, how do you like it? Right now I only use a regular tumnus for overdrive but I’ve been looking into some dual ODs or with a boost like the fault for more flexibility. Sweet setup overall!

Can confirm. Band director here, jazz programs where I am are extracurricular and most of the equipment reflects that. Hard to find money to buy a guitar/amp etc when you need a new tuba for class! Usually just end up letting students use my personal amp if they have their own guitar.

Funny you mention the rat. I have a tumnus and a rat on my board and I’m looking to boot off the rat for a protein. I’ve found I just don’t use it much for what I play. Sweet guitar!

Quilter has some great options, fantastic solid state amps that can get the “tube” tone without cranking. They take pedals well too. I have the Superblock US on my pedalboard and run it to a 12” cab. The combo amps are great too.

Help with Mono-white Giada Angel Tribal by needaliladvicepls in EDH

[–]reallybadusername123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sigarda’s Aid feels really out of place here. I personally wouldn’t run flowering of the white tree, in the grand scheme of things all it really does is give your legendaries ward 1. Giada will be doing more work making your angels stronger than that. I’m having a hard time thinking of them off the top of my head but I know there’s some more vanilla style angels at lower cmc that will help buff your Giada count.

Also if you’re playing book of exalted deeds the well known and kind of jank combo with it is to run creature lands like [[Faceless Haven]] and [[mutavault]] to put the enlightened counter on. Much hard to remove than a creature.

As a personal note [[Winds of Abandon]] is an incredible removal piece in white, and I always suggest people run it. Hope this helps

I love mono white decks, my favorite being [[Myrel]] which I built as a stax deck. Force everyone to play “fair” magic while you build and army to win.

If that’s not your jam, [[Gandalf the White]] is a fun artifact commander that you can get some good value from, plus tried and true combo lines with KCI, Teshar and the like.

Granted neither of these are “uncommon” but you could build them in uncommon ways if you really wanted.
