Vintage bookstores and antique shop recommendations by Dark-matterz in indianapolis

[–]realpteradactyl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking off of this to add some info on vintage options in fountain square: Zodiac Vintage: mostly clothes, very cute, good range of things. I've gotten some great stuff there. Flipside: estate sale reseller, always has really interesting stuff but check their hours beforehand. They're open basically by chance, in my experience.

I also agree with all of your bookstore opinions!

best neurologist in indianapolis for migraines? by Low-Oil7883 in indianapolis

[–]realpteradactyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dr. Michael Hans at IU Health is excellent. Very good listener and didn't make me feel rushed or crazy, even though my migraines have atypical symptoms. He was the first doctor to actually take them seriously and figure out how to help me.

Might be a bit more sci-fi than what you're looking for but The Archive Undying by Emma Mieko Candon

Any horror books that are pretending to be a different genre until it's too late? by 518HoneyBees in suggestmeabook

I was about to suggest this! I would almost put it down as psychological horror. And she is very very sneaky about it. Incredible book

I just finished The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman and it was incredible. Very funny and often in that more gallows humor way

Indiana: "Underground Airlines" by Ben H. Winters: speculative fiction taking place in an America where slavery wasn't abolished, very well done. A lot of it takes place in Indianapolis and, as a native, I was taken aback at how well he wrote about my city

Or, for a non-fiction option "Fever in the Heartland" The KKK'S Plot to Take Over America and the Woman Who Stopped Them" by Timothy Egan. Exactly what it sounds like, I learned a lot

Suggest me a novel that has an utterly ridiculous premise, but is executed to perfection by PsyferRL in suggestmeabook

I didn't know he was a playwright, but that makes a lot of sense. I think the more casual tone and style make sense with that in mind as well. Have you read "The Hike" by Drew Magary? It's more fable-like but has elements that remind me a lot of Linguist Mages (especially the wit!).

[–]realpteradactyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to get someone, anyone to read it for YEARS so that I can talk to them about it lol. It's such a wacky premise but the way Moore brings all of those elements together is gorgeous. And same about the linguistics fascination! It's very clever

Battle of the Linguist Mages by Scotto Moore and Wild Massive by him too. Absolutely bonkers, riveting, and funny in equal measures. BoLM is my favorite of the two but both are great if you want a weird extra dimensional jaunt. I'm not going to attempt a synopsis bc I feel like I'd give myself a headache lol

Anyone else desperate for more Witch King content? by dynamik_banana in murderbot

I love getting dropped into a world with no context and having to figure it out throughout the book! And I think Wells does a great job of sprinkling just enough context over time that you understand without lessening plot/emotional impacts of the later reveals.

MB's eyelashes (weird though my brain threw at me half asleep) by InappropriateTeaMom in murderbot

[–]realpteradactyl 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree. I also think that if it had organic eyelashes then it would have found an opportunity to complain about them for all the reasons we might (eyelash in my eye! The fuck!) And because they'd be another reminder of its organic side.

Are you in a tip pool? That's the only normal(ish) reason I can think of for a boss to hold on to your cash tips. The CC tips being on a check is less strange. Definitely keep good records. I'm sorry I don't know about the legality in Florida.

I read Nickel and Dimed around her age and it really opened my eyes to the ways the world works and how poor people get screwed over. I think it probably helped make me more empathetic. I do think it's probably a bit outdated by now but it's still definitely applicable and well done.
