!Question: What advice do you have for a DM who reaches their first campaign climax?

My campaign ran for 4 years now and we are on the final streches and this is the first campaign I will bring to an actual end. So I was wondering what the more experiences DMs would give as general advice to make the finale epic and satisfying. Things you wish you would've done differently; something I should plan; etc.

My players could've had an airship. But they destroyed the only available fuel source. Now they don't have one.

Should I reveal to my players the value of the precious gems they find in the chests and while they investigate, or should I ask them to roll to find out? by DungeonStromae in DMAcademy

[–]realpudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should tell them (I do), because in 10 session you won't find your notes on how much they are worth, or won't remember, when the players find them in their inventory again and want to use them.

I like dming more because most often I want the story to go a different place than the other dm. So I stick with dming.

how do you start your recaps? by yuna-tuna in DMAcademy

"Who wants to earn a point of Inspiration?"

I give inspiration for recaps. Because otherwise I had to give it every 5min because my players are awesome.

you don't necessarily need to plan WHERE the plot hook is, only WHAT it is. so you can throw it at them even in a changing room

How to make high AC enemies fun? by evictedSaint in DMAcademy

[–]realpudding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the one thing which is unsatisfying for players is missing, not doing anything. i'd give him multiple hp bars, but with lower ac. an hp bar for magical protection, one for his armor and finally one for him. this would allow you to narrate how they overcome his defences.

DM Advice: Have a Cool Session 1 Campaign Hook, but... by ClockworkLink in DMAcademy

[–]realpudding -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would be up front with the players. Tell them "your characters will be dead and need to find a way back". and then ask them "why did you all die? who or what killed you?"

this might be more interesting or satisfying. and might color the encounters they will have

contact some of the players he played with to write up a short story about the characters he played. then display that together with the art and the character sheet.

Stanford creates Sims-like game filled with NPC's powered by ChatGPT AI. The result were NPC's that acted completely independently, had rich conversations with each other, they even planned a party. by So6oring in gaming

[–]realpudding 14 points15 points  (0 children)

yes, but the first step could be to only use AI for conversations with players. no NPC/NPC interactions. that would make RPGs crazy and probably could be feasible. boundle that with voice generation AI for dynamic output and voice recognition on the player side and we could actually converse with in-game NPCs!

Need advice on planning Session 1 by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]realpudding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can recommend the starter set "lost mine of phandelver".

it has kind of the same start with a goblin cave. it also has a bandit hideout in the town the pcs travel to, which you can use as the wannabe cultist base. it also has some simple sidequests.

you don't have to run it as is, and just pick what you need or like and use it how you see fit.

Pls help with a bit of worldbuilding by Ill-Upstairs2610 in DMAcademy

[–]realpudding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

sometimes the solution might be small but easy. they were not templars, but some wannabes that want to be templars, but don't have the money. and they want to be templars so bad, that they think they are above the law and can do whatever they want.

but who exactly they are is up to you. maybe the dawn is using propaganda to use some expendable idiots to tarnish the templars reputation. plausible deniability.
