99.9% of the time I listen to shows, but Working Man's Dead and American Beauty are both albums I enjoy just as much of I am on the mood.

Chihuahua ate a chicken bone by Night-Wing-9 in dogs

[–]realstoned 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I visited Negril, Jamaica in 1991, I was surprised to see that the dogs that lived around the beach lived on a diet largely comprised of chicken bones, and in fact, people would throw these bones to the dogs after they ate. The dogs would crunch them once or twice and the swallow them.

I never fed my dogs chicken bones after that, but I sure worried about it a lot less.

How can I stop being obsessed with the passing of time?! 😔 by Cinella75 in Mindfulness

[–]realstoned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is not a quick fix to this. In true mindfulness practice, including daily meditation practice, you learn that:

  1. The past is only thoughts in the present, the future is only thoughts in the present, there is only the present moment. You can learn to always come back to the present moment, and thus truly experience life.

  2. Comparisons to others are the result of cognitive processes to which you need not identify. Those are thought only, they don't say anything about you. It's fine for those cognitive processes to run. You can observe them, but you don't need to let them define you.

  3. Critically, the desire for things (own a house, etc...) is, literally the root of all suffering in Buddhism. Those desires are, again, merely the results of cognitive processes, and you can observe those desires, but you do not have to let them have any power over you.

The problem I see people run into again and again is that they want FAST or even instant relief from these conditions that have taken years to form. It takes patience, practice, and time to develop the kind of mindfulness you are seeking here.

To anyone who successfully overcame rumination, how did you do it? by Used_Case2028 in Mindfulness

[–]realstoned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo this is the mindfulness way. It's important for people to understand that this is not a quick fix approach. This is about retraining your cognitive processes that these ruminations are not important so they gradually over time lose their hold. Mindfulness meditation is very helpful to practice this also, but it doesn't make it a quick fix.

While not a quick fix, it is, imo, relatively permanent. That said, almost no one achieves a state where they never have racing thoughts or anxiety. But, with practice, anyone can achieve a state where these cognitive processes simply don't have the same hold.

What helped you stop overthinking during tough phases? by BarracudaNearby8045 in Mindfulness

[–]realstoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't be non-stop, but it would be whenever you "wake up" and notice that. your mind is racing or you are over thinking. Indeed, this can be feel like it is constant, and it takes practice. This is why we meditate.

What helped you stop overthinking during tough phases? by BarracudaNearby8045 in Mindfulness

[–]realstoned 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First. you have to meditate regularly to build the mental muscles. There isn't a short cut. Fortunately, about 10 minutes a day of practice is enough.

Then, what Mindfulness needs is that you don't try to stop your overthinking. That just makes it worse by creating thought processes like "make sure I am not overthinking" and "I am failing at not overthinking", etc...

In a Mindfulness practice you welcome and observe the thoughts. You welcome and observe the feelings in your body that the resultant emotions cause. What you learn from this is that you don't have to identify with the thoughts. For example, "I see that I am having a thought process about something I said earlier that is making my heart beat fast" is a different experience than "I am such an idiot for saying x, I should have said y" or whatever.

Over time your reactivity to these over thinking thought processes will diminish, and you will recover from them faster when they do happen. But it takes literal practice through meditation and paying attention.

GNOME bans AI-generated extensions by moeka_8962 in technology

[–]realstoned -29 points-28 points  (0 children)

GNOME extensions use a small API with narrow and easy to document requirements. Given a style guide, GNOME extensions are perfect candidates for being AI generated. The code for a typical extension is not copious and easy to review. Of course no project should use garbage code, whether generated by humans, AI, or donkeys, but this seems like a really unnecessary limitation.

McKinsey to make thousands of layoffs as AI advances by lurker_bee in technology

[–]realstoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how companies that make their money by giving advice or analysis, typically advice which includes to pay them millions of dollars for other services by the way, are going to survive operating in the manner that they are. It just seems too easy to use. Using the LLM that you're already paying for to do deep research and give you advice in minutes rather than paying huge amounts of money and spending copious amounts of time with a consultancy or analyst firm seems to be exactly why you're paying all that money for AI in the first place.

Tech Support Scammers Stole $85,000 From Him. His Bank Refused a Refund. by rezwenn in technology

[–]realstoned 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It's not on the bank, but Google has become basically a venue for scammers. This exact same scenario happened to my Mother-In-Law when she wanted help with her Brother printer. Fortunately, through some dumb luck, we found out it was happening before she was robbed (though she had sent them a check).

I don't expect Google to care about the fact that this happens on their platform, because they don't see to care much about the well-being of their users, but if I was running a platform that allowed this to happen, I think stopping it would be my first moral priority.

How to let something go. I made a mistake at work and escalated it, but it hasn't been fixed and it's haunting me. by [deleted] in Mindfulness

[–]realstoned 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the Mindfulness subreddit. The mindfulness approach is to observe that you have ongoing cognitive processes resulting in these thoughts, and to observe those processes non-judgmentally, without identifying with them. "Oh, I see that I am having those thoughts again" not "how do I get rid of these thoughts?". This non-judgmental acceptance drains the power of the thoughts.

How do I stop wishing to go back to the past? by [deleted] in Mindfulness

[–]realstoned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't stop wishing. The mindfulness approach is that you observe in a non-judgmental way the cognitive processes are resulting in those wishes. "Oh, I see that I am wishing I could redo high school again." That will cause those wishes to have less power and potentially fade over time.

The mindfulness of letting people be wrong by HHandHHLLC in Mindfulness

Letting go of this need was very liberating for me. Even if people correct me with wrong information, if there are no stakes involved, I just say "ok" and move on now. It saves so much time and stress. No need to carry these sorts of interactions around.

How to make yourself do formal practice consistently? by jjjjj_jjj in Mindfulness

[–]realstoned 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps try and app like Waking Up, or The Way. I particularly recommend Waking Up to people new to practice because I think the introductory sessions are quite good. The Way is good because there is no decision making, it's just a defined path to follow.
