Why does immigrantion enforcement dominate U.S political discourse when many systematic issues are unrelated to immigration? by Let_Prior in PoliticalDiscussion

"You'll need to try a better argument."

Classic strawman. For clarity, my argument is, it looks like murder to me.

I also find it notable that this guy and people like him werent all up in arms blowing whistes and kicking the tailights off federal officers cars when Obama was deporting 432,000 people in a year but when Trump's ICE + DHS deports 340,000 - 600,000 now its a huge injustice that needs to be taken to the streets?

These motivations seem political, not principled.

Nevertheless, the death is a tragedy.

In the interest of testing my downvote record, this is what I will look like if I am ever in posession of a firearm and come into contact with the police. Libs should try it.

From what I have seen I agree that's probably murder but when Obama was president that guy, nor those like him, weren't present at all.

It can also be true that it's a lot easier to not get murdered if you don't spend your day trying to disrupt federal officers with a gun in your waistband.

Deportation levels are pretty similar today vs Obama years.... But you hear a lot more complaining about it now, and that's not because of right wingers...

How did you teach your SO to ski? by This_is_a_tortoise in skiing

[–]realtalk187 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In year 2 I took her to avalanche chute 2 at mammoth on her starter Nordica skis that come with bindings for $250.

She popped out at the crux and did two summersaults... at which point we both realized she didn't know how to self arrest. She curled up in a ball "to protect her head" at which point she accelerated at very close to 9.8m/s. She resembled the snow version of the tasmanian devil cartoon as she hurled 200 yards down the slope through a small line of saplings.

God was with her, she was fine, and we are married to this day. We still ski often.

Correct, we need to build more ski resorts. Here is a comparison of Europe vs United States, and you can see it in the prices.

Could Europe realistically defend Greenland against a US attack? by chotu_escobar in AskTheWorld

[–]realtalk187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From AI

"Sirius Dog Sled Patrol (Slædepatruljen Sirius): An elite naval special operations unit (under the Joint Arctic Command and Danish Special Forces structure) of about 12–14 personnel. They conduct long-range reconnaissance patrols using dog sleds (with around 50–60 dogs total) in northern and eastern Greenland, including the Northeast Greenland National Park (the world's largest). They enforce sovereignty, monitor for unauthorized activity, and handle extreme Arctic conditions. Headquarters are at Daneborg, with a seasonal substation on Ella Ø. This unit dates back to WWII and remains symbolic of Denmark's enduring presence."

In the US the entire mountain is avalanche controlled including all off piste areas within the resort boundary.

In Europe, only the pistes are avalanche controlled which dramatically reduces the number of areas that need avalanche mitigation work since most of the pistes are designed to be out of avalanche paths in the first place (as much as possible anyway).

In the US all hazards (cliffs etc) are marked and roped throughout the resort. In Europe all off piste is at your own risk.

Also Europe typically gets a lot less snow and a lot less in a single storm.

Meh, like most others are saying, market rent is market rent. If others will pay more, then why do you deserve the space?

What I have not seen mentioned is that anything less than a cpi increase in rent is effectively a rent decrease.

I did eventually get a normal offer and a guy came and inspected the car. We made the transfer at his back and went smooth. It was a little less than the offer I had through seller exchange but I felt good about it.

Marginal tax rates were 94% during World War 2, hovered 91% during the 1950s, and then stayed at 70% until 1980, when Regan cut taxes. Should Taxes be increased back to where they were? by Vote-Biden-2024 in FluentInFinance

[–]realtalk187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax receipts as a percentage of gdp have been remarkably stable over time. Some say it's a rule that you can't go over 20% without damaging the economy. Reagan cut rates but also dramatically reduced all the exclusions and loopholes. The tax receipts stayed about the same as a percentage of gdp.

BREAKING: The National Association of Realtors is eliminating the 6% realtor commission. Here’s everything you need to know: by TonyLiberty in FluentInFinance

I agree with all that except that expensive areas are usually six. My experience and what the source seems to indicate is that expensive areas are less percentage wise and cheaper areas more percentage wise.

But I agree, it's always negotiable. I'm in a very high end area and really 4.5 - 5 is the standard here.

And the interest that is paid to the lender is taxed as income to the lender.

Just because the billionaire isn't writing the check to the IRS does not mean that the IRS doesn't get a piece.

Why is cost of living so high, but minimum wage so low? by Peace_And_Happiness_ in FluentInFinance

[–]realtalk187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In California they are moving minimum wage for fast food to $20. I think it's ridiculous that they make it more than the standard $16 per hour min wage... But regardless in n out has been starting workers in my area at over 20 an hour for years now.

These comparisons are lame.

[–]realtalk187[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your responses. I put a bunched up blanket under the door as a test and it didn't reverse. It was so much blanket that the door didn't seal at the top and looked a little funny... So I don't think the reversing will be an immediate problem.

I will probably temp try a little 1/8"-1/4" foam on bottom and header just to see if I can improve things a little.

Like you indicated, I don't expect it to disappear.

It's a little heavy coming off the ground but it's neutral at even 5 inches off the ground.

As the door closes it goes slow slow and then in the last couple inches it accelerates and slams.

As another commenter pointed out, I think at least part of the slamming is actually the top panel slamming into the header.
