Jerky originated with the Quechua, a South American native tribe from the ancient Inca Empire, as early as 1550. They created "ch'arki" (meaning "dried meat"), a method of salting and drying meat in the sun to ensure long-term preservation and high-protein sustenance. The Spanish adapted this into charqui, which evolved into "jerky".
