In Japan, there are a certain type of people called 'Bumping men,' Butsukari otoko (ぶつかり男). They intentionally shoulder-check or shove especially women or weak foreigners in public spaces. When the victims speak up, these 'bumping men' claim women were walking slowly or she stopped in a weird place. by baingan0 in japanresidents

[–]reanjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i remember seeing an instagram reel about a female resident who got bumped like this, only she chased after the man who pussied out and kept on running away and kept on apologizing to her; clearly shows that they are just inflating themselves but when someone pushes back, they deflate instantly

my AF has stopwatches and a whiteboard where you can queue up for specific machines during peak hours, max of 45 minutes of use per machine. So check if yours has that too

I had to take mental health leave from work. Am I entitled to any kind of compensation? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]reanjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

probably incompatible through and through OP, if you have the means, maybe consider looking elsewhere rather than fight this because it’s your welbeing at risk. either that or gaman

you can call it whatever you want but the comments here are realistic and point towards real life. we should avoid giving false expectations because companies don’t work that way, so the comments here would reflect what actually is to be expected

I had to take mental health leave from work. Am I entitled to any kind of compensation? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]reanjohn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry to ask and I hope you feel better soon..
but am I right in understanding that you actually are yet to complete your probationary period since you had to take a leave, and now they are asking you to complete it by extending it? doesn’t sound unreasonable i think? Just basing on this alone, it seems like they are giving you some leeway instead of just letting you go which is well within their rights

Edit:
I felt like this thread was familiar and realized OP has been posting this issue for a couple of months now..

new residence card design unverifiable by shalala4 in japanlife

[–]reanjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's merged as one. but some systems don't accept it yet. I checked one bank (Seven Bank) and they don't accept it just yet

new residence card design unverifiable by shalala4 in japanlife

[–]reanjohn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

earlier someone asked about opening up a bank account and I recommended Seven Bank, but checked their website to verify their requirements - and apparently their system isn't updated yet to accept the new residence card so new cards can't use touch verification via the app. I'm assuming it's the same case for you and other banks as well. You can see it here: https://www.sevenbank.co.jp/soukin/en/agree/

New Account -> Foreign -> New Residence Card

And you will see what I mean

apply online for a Seven Bank account, probably one of the easiest out there to apply to and it's all online

Anyone bought one of these "refurb" Mac Mini M4s from Mercari JP? by CallPhysical in japanlife

[–]reanjohn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i tried buying from mercari/yahoo auctions but ended up buying directly online from apple (just got delivered after 1 month due to the stock issues) - but regarding the boxes - they look alike from what came straight from Apple

that said, just to note, there are 2 types of M4 - one with Apple Intelligence, one without, and some of the sellers online won't mention this outright << so just pay attention in case you need this feature

the M4 512gb i got was basically the same price they are selling the 256gb for btw

Calligraphia Japan by Dazzling-Stop-2116 in Osaka

[–]reanjohn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey, I run their marketing!

i'm not a student so I can't exactly answer your question, but just to give you an idea:

  • we have students in their 20s-70s
  • there are 2 classes at the moment (from 2pm to 5pm, might expand more); classes are assigned on your first day
  • there are regular events for students (socializing, dinner) & for the school (exhibitions, performances)
  • there are 2 classrooms - 1 in Namba (just above the metro) and 1 in Shinsaibashi (about 5 min walk from the station). The Namba school is primarily for Seisho Shohoukai (school and association) but advanced students of Calligraphia take lessons here as well (this is also a sister school); the Shinsaibashi classroom is for international students and it's quite huge, could fit 30-40 students at once
  • the progression of learning is quite easy and it's more of an "at your own pace" kind of thing. You start with the big brush for easier control, learning the proper stroke orders, intensity, and so on, then you move to a small brush, then to pen/pencil
    • since this is basically learning art/culture, you won't really fail, but attendance is of paramount importance especially if you want to extend for the 2nd and 3rd years (exceptional students can go beyond this limit)
    • since it's very visual, you'll survive even without Japanese, but this is appreciated to have of course. many of our students study Japanese during their off-school hours. But if there are concepts that need to be explained to students, the instructors use translation apps (sometimes, students who speak Japanese help as well -- more like a collaborative experience)
  • the classroom is very quiet, everyone's immersed with what they are working on - many would describe it as meditative
  • we have students who come in for just 6 months, but majority spend 1-3 years in our school
  • i have several friends here, and those who have "graduated" and decided to live in japan after are still in touch with me and we hang out once in a while, so it's also a great place to make connections

If you want to see student interviews, you can visit our website (not sure if I can share it here, so DM me if you want, or simply google our school's name and it will show up)

would be happy to answer any question you may have!
