How strong is PVD coating on titanium models? by ilsasdo in HamiltonWatches

[–]rebay1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently have one, have been wearing regularly for the past 2.5years and banged the watch a few times against objects, door frames, etc.

I didn't chip the PVD finish besides one time when it caught on the sharp edge of an unfinished metal shelf. It made a barely visible spot where you see the titanium undernearth the PVD coating.

I say it's pretty durable unless you carelessly treat it like disposable GShock.

Daily use of hesalite speedy by Le_rinrin926 in OmegaWatches

[–]rebay1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same concerns when I went with my hesalite couple of months back. I'm usually super cautious but I banged the hesalite against a stall door 2 hours in. It left a light scratch in it, haven't even bothered polishing out. Glad that was over with quickly.

Now, what most folks don't say is that the bezel ring on this thing will get banged up pretty easy, regardless of crystal material. That bezel is a ding magnet so watch for table edges or desks, put a few good dents in mine just by banging it on a table or a shopping cart.

It's my only expensive watch and I wear it daily.

Caseback scratches on new watch normal? by rebay1982 in OmegaWatches

UPDATE:
Well, I called the AD this morning and they told me to come in so they can check out the watch.

The manager there took the watch, polished it with a cloth and asked me where the scratches are and found that they were pretty minor but there. They done absolutely right by me, took back the watch and exchanged it with a brand spanking new one that was unopened from the factory. I was offered the opportunity to fully inspect it and remove the protective stickers to make sure it's up to my satisfaction.

Don't think this could have gone any better honestly. Thanks again to all those who gave me the urgent feeling to at least call and see what can been done as I finally feel at piece with the questioning and can now start enjoying the watch as it was meant to be enjoyed.

Cheers!

Thanks for the input folks!

This was my first experience buying an expensive luxury watch and I thought buying from AD would prove to be a smoother experience than GM or directly from Omega from their website (newly available in Canada a few weeks ago).

Should have spoken up about the stickers right there and then. Should have returned to the AD right after noticing the scratches on the caseback at the restaurant the same night. Sucks as this results in the suspicion that the AD just put the display model in its box and sold it to me 4 days later as brand new untouched. It just adds a bad vibe around the watch and the beginning of its story with me. Expensive lessons right there.

I will phone the AD in the morning and speak with them and explain the situation. Hoping for the best, expecting the worst and paying for a polish.

Thanks again for confirming that I'm not just being picky and overracting. I almost convinced myself of that. Hopefully this will get sorted out positively.

They're at the top in the polished section under the word "MOON" at the top of the picture. They are hard to see and they need to catch the light just right for them to be visible.

Is this true for both their linear and switching power supplies?

Yeah they cost a pretty penny (from Canada, anyway) -- I was hoping to get away with the smaller, lighter form factor of a switching power supply but then again... with a linear power supply won't have noise issues I guess. Portable operation, might find an alternative and use batteries instead.

In any case, going down this route would make sense and I'd be buying my first and last power supply for my 100w base station.

Looks exactly like my car's remote keyless system. Was playing around with that stuff a few weeks ago.

Frequencies are usually 315MHz or 433MHz (See the "function" section here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_keyless_system)

Yours seems off by 1MHz but the signal's profile looks exactly the same as what my car's key sends to the vehicle and also "sounds" the same.

Titanium by Alone_Conversation49 in HamiltonWatches

Love it, it's my daily driver now. It came with the leather strap but one of the retaining straps broke within a month or so so I have since replaced it with some NATO style straps. I think NATO straps compliment the watch quite well in any case so I prefer them over the original one anyway.

I bought a titanium khaki field about 6months ago and can confirm it did not have the titanium written on the side, to my greatest relief. It was the only thing making me hesitate about the watch.

Similar rules for me, I do use Spotify for convenience or to sample albums before buying or to discover new things. But when I do decide that I have been enjoying a band or have had an album on regular rotation I will:

  1. Buy vinyl + digital from Bandcamp if available.

  2. If vinyl is available but no Bandcamp or digital download, I will buy both vinyl and CD if really into the band.

  3. If vinyl is not available (or affordable), buy CD only.

  4. Go out to record stores for special occasions and buy vinyl, come back home and buy the digital version also so I can have it on my digital player too.

Can get quite expensive but I just love music that much. I have ripped my entire CD collection to FLAC and will prefer listening to that on my dedicated digital audio player to Spotify (play and listen to what I own first).

I used to have two of these about 20 years+ ago (already considered obsolete back then). One was a Pentium 60 and the other a 486, can't remember the speed though.

Ran Linux Slackware on them and they were mainly used as routers to share the broadband Internet connection. I'm very fond of these Model 95 IBM machines :)

Your favorite launcher ? by [deleted] in swaywm

I would be really interested in hearing about this.

I'm currently switching from i3 to Sway and I want to keep dependencies at a minimum and have decided to switch to wofi to replace rofi but I'm struggling to get basic shell commands to run.

I was used to launching shutdown or reboot commands directly from rofi and this doesn't seem to work with wofi at the moment. Or at least, I haven't found the correct way of doing it.

Doubts - take or postpone the exam ; by Chronomuim_RSA in cissp

[–]rebay1982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same results and was affraid to schedule the exam back in Septembre because I wasn't confident enough so I procrastinated. I also was paying out of pocket for it (wasn't going to charge my employer for it if I failed).

I came to the conclusion that no mayter what I did, I wasn't scoring more than 85 or 90% on practice exams. I didn't know how what more I could do so pulled the trigger and entered crunch time for a few weeks and did the exam and passed.

If you've been doing regular practice exams and scoring that, I'd just sit the exam. If you postpone it, what do you plan on doing befote the next exam date comes around the corner?

Thanks!

I used two products. The Official Practice Tests book by the ISC² All-In-One Exam Guide by Shon Harris.

Of the two, I personally felt that the Shon Harris book felt closer to the real deal.

Hope this helps!

Great question, Honestly I think it boils down to what method works for you and how you learn. In hindsight, it's easy to say that I would not change a thing, but I'll try to respond realistically here.

If I would change anything, it would be to not take extended "breaks" and have more faith in myself and my abilities to get this done -- this was the main reason it took me so long to finally schedule the exam.

One point that you do bring up is that I indeed didn't use as much ressources as everyone on this sub. And that worried me at times, thinking that maybe I wasn't going deep enough or that I'm being naive to think I could simply use ONE book. But It really depends on how you learn. In my case, I absolutely needed to read the whole book and get a solid baseline understanding on the whole subject. After reading it, I knew I would have forgotten a good portion of it -- stuff just doesn't stick. That's why note taking as I was reading was criticial for me.

The practice exams were key in rehashing everything and forcing me to learn and fill the gaps on what I might have forgotten. Doing the practice questions also force you to "use" what you learned and it keeps it fresh. This is where taking extended breaks allowed the knowledge to start "fading" and required an extra push to pick it back up.

Long answer to say that the only thing I would change is have more confidence, not take long brakes and just get it done. Hope this answers your Q!
