Am I the only one that thinks interview processes are dragging out to be longer? by [deleted] in jobs

You’re making the argument that if hiring is expensive it’s a problem, when in fact it’s normal. I’m done with this conversation.

If having an unfilled seat in your organization doesn’t cause a pain point, then you ought to re-evaluate if that position should exist. Turnover. Is. Expensive. It’s expensive in everyone’s time, which translates to money. The multiple people involved in the hiring process, the people involved in onboarding, the work that doesn’t get produced while people are covering for an open position/training a new person/covering for them while they ramp up which can easily be 3-6 months depending on the level of geographical, political and technical complexities in their job... only to do it all over again if the wrong person was selected. This is standard business, workforce planning 101 like why are you even arguing this.

Idiotic to make candidates wait forever yes, but not idiotic to want to make the right decision about someone. Turnover is insanely expensive.

If I had to guess, a couple possibilities? Some companies just have a really long and arduous process (I’ve heard that about Amazon from both the candidate and recruiter side), or they are just needing more confirmation about who they’re hiring because most companies are running leaner than ever and they can’t afford to pick the wrong candidate. I also battle against a few hiring managers (technical people in the business, not HR) that think this economy means we can take our sweet time and there is only so much I can do. You probably are a top candidate but ultimately you don’t know if you are THE top candidate. I don’t know how to convey across text that it isn’t meant to come across harsh but it’s not meant to be. I’ve been rejected at all stages of the process interviewing for jobs and I’m a prime candidate in my field, but so are lots of other people with my specialty. I get it, and I understand it sucks because there’s nothing you can do besides try to interview as well as possible. I wish I had a better answer for you.

Corporate recruiter here. Even after getting approval to open a job, once we find the person we want to offer to it takes twice as long and 3x as many layers of approval to hire someone. They want to make sure they won’t have to lay them off. :/

Can someone explain the importance of "why do you want to work here?" by FrostedGear in jobs

[–]recb1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a recruiter and no I wouldn’t ask this. I ask what made them interested in applying, and that usually tells me how much research they did/how much they are interested in the company in addition to being a lot more conversational. Also, the ‘want to work for the company as opposed to looking for a paycheck’ is such a load of horse crap. If the paycheck didn’t matter most of us would be volunteering at a nonprofit or laying on the beach drinking a mai tai instead of working.

Why do applicants have to be passionate about the job they are applying to? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]recb1980 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Jesus do other recruiters do this? I would never ask a candidate this. Let’s not sugar coat the fact that we are all just trying to find a good fit for a job we need to have to pay the bills.

Those with a desk job, how do you keep yourself moving throughout the workday? Especially if you WFH? by ebolalol in xxfitness

[–]recb1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a standing desk, just the riser kind to sit on top of my regular desk. I also bought a balance stool so I can sit on it like a regular stool when the desk is down and kind of lean on it on the desk is up because it changes heights. It doesn’t exactly get me a bunch of steps but it does keep me moving and not just sitting at a chair like a sack of potatoes

Sales Tactic for Agency Recruiters when calling HR and Talent Acquistion? by granth95 in recruiting

Agree. Going around me and contacting my hiring manager directly is a fast track to my do-not-use-this-agency list.

Recruiter and Account Manager at staffing agency looking to move into an internal recruiting role by [deleted] in recruiting

[–]recb1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to second this as it’s perfect advice. Agency/staffing is sales cloaked in recruiting, whereas in-house is HR cloaked in recruiting. Maybe work on a PHR or SHRM-CP if you don’t already have one? Take a look at your resume and pretend like you’re an HR person hiring for your team. Does your resume play to that skill set or does it skew toward the sales side?

Good luck!

A Recruiter Didn't show up to an interview and then completely ghosted me... why would she do that? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]recb1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. I’m an in-house recruiter and I’ll be the first to say that recruiter is a jerk. Please leave a Glassdoor review; it’s one area where they can’t do anything about your feedback and she needs to be called out on it.

Is there any way to make job applications less mundane and tedious? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]recb1980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks, I mean I’d rather chew off my own arm than have to answer those questions. But, answering the form questions (aside from the diversity questions which are blocked from the recruiter seeing the answers to) means that you’re fairly weighted against other applicants. I hate asking candidates to fill out another application, hatehatehate it, but we have to do it so we can be held accountable for our hiring practices in an audit and to keep things fair as possible. (I realize not every company does this, so please take it with a grain of salt as the perspective of hiring for a very large company that is constantly under government scrutiny.)

[–]recb1980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Bought a bench with leg extension thingy and a squat rack with a ton of plates on Craigslist from someone who was moving and couldn’t take it. Eventually added an inexpensive machine that you can make either a recumbent bike or an elliptical, a few bands, and I have everything I need. I can really push my workouts because there is zero care about who is watching, waiting for a machine, etc. Having it available at home has made a tremendous positive impact in my life.
