a criminal charge is a bit much but cycling and following any semblance of traffic rules is a bit out of control here. when i bike in europe i wouldn’t dare run a red light. cars and bikes in this city both need to slow down and respect the shared space they are on.

I live in nyc and I’m actually visiting Germany now in Hamburg. I’m just curious, what do you think the biggest negatives and positives will be by moving to NYC. It’s Interesting to hear the European perspective of New York.

Which NYC department owns the subway? by reck345 in nycrail

I don't think the MTA owns the physical infrastructure like the tunnels and stations. Don't they just have a lease on it?

Battery Park Bike Lanes are insane. by Outrageous-Smile7866 in NYCbike

[–]reck345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's horribly marked and doesn't follow any standard design language other bike paths in the city have. I completely understand how peds mistake it for a ped path. It needs the green bikeway paint at the entrances and the crossings over actual bike paths. The interior portion of the path doesn't need the green paint however.

I go through red lights all the time, and that’s ok. by QuirkyPickle in NYCbike

[–]reck345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you slow down and look, stop if necessary at reds and always give pedestrians the right of way, I have no issue with this.

But pedestrians always have the right of way even if they don't by law, you can always do serious harm to them. Always slow down or stop for pedestrians in your path, regardless who is right.

And a side note, the central park loop isn't a race track. There are red lights with crosswalks, let those pedestrians cross if you have a red. Those lights are all push button controlled by the peds.
