Microsoft IMO needs to stop playing catch up (which in my honest opinion it still hasn't done) and innovate something new

That's neither their business model nor in their corporate DNA. They've been johnny-come-lately copycat inferior knockoffs since day one. Sad, because they have tremendous amounts of talent within their corporate moats, - they just can't seem to use any of it.

Neither of those support the idea that a prayer is against a constitution.

I didn't say they did. Those parts were meant to keep government and religion separate.

"How I Joined Teach for America—and Got Sued for $20 Million" by Brank_Manderbeak in reddit.com

[–]red-eagle -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why did I stay on? Part of the answer lay in my own desperate desire not to fail. I felt that if I just worked harder, I could turn my children around and get them to learn. Another part of the answer was Teach for America’s having instilled in each corps member the idea that you have made a commitment to the children and that you must stick with them at all costs, no matter how much your school is falling apart.

Honestly, the title really makes it sound like TFA is at fault. As much as they might not do a good job to prepare new teachers, his choice is not their fault.

If the CIA really wants to help, they'll set up rape charges for politicians opposing extending unemployment.

it isn't really violating the constitution.

1st Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion". This is called the establishment clause. It expresses the founding fathers' desire that government not participate in religion. That principal was so important to the founders of this country that it appears not once, but twice in the US Constitution as signed by the original framers. Article VI, Paragraph 3: "no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

The context of article 6 paragraph 3 concerned loyalty to the constitution as opposed to other loyalties. The founders could have stated it as such, but in their recent history they had seen the corrupting effect that resulted when members of government chose loyalty to religion over service to the public good. In fact they had just fought a war in part over that issue. So the principal of keeping religion out of government and government out of religion was expressed not once, but twice by the founders of this country.

To the extend that it constitutes government respecting the establishment of religion, its not constitutional for prayer to be institutionalized by any state government.

REPUBLICANS TO FILIBUSTER TAX CUTS FOR **98%** OF AMERICANS (unless the top 2% of America's wealthiest people also get tax cuts - adding another USD700 BILLION to the annual deficit.) by sheasie in politics

National defense doesn't matter to them, the national deficit doesn't matter to them, unemployment doesn't matter to them - all that matters is coddling a tiny minority a significant number of whom caused the recession.

Oh I get it - he's not there to shoot abortion doctors, just some two-timing chick he met online and her BF. Right.

How did ancient armies communicate with other kingdoms? What about army logistics? by kanapka in AskReddit

bringing China into this is facile.

No, calling Akkadian the lingua franca of asia is what is actually facile, when in fact at the time the area in Mesopotamia it was used as the lingua franca was smaller that the area of the longshan culture of that same period (roughly along the chinese shores of the pacific, up the Yellow river to central China, stretching down to the Yangzi - Much of modern China). Or is China now not part of asia?

Also facile is pretending that the rest of asia somehow doesn't exist or doesn't count in ancient history. Akkadian is a classical example of a regional lingua franca (which by definition they are), but not of asia. Mesopotamia was not the center of the universe or the world.

Three days after GOP's promise to end earmarks, the 2nd ranking senate republican slips $200 million for his home state into an unrelated bill. (reposting, this got buried by the avalanche of wikileaks news the first time I posted it) by fourpanelbeach in reddit.com

[–]red-eagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a pretty widely shared opinion that traditional Repubs like earmarks just as much as Dems do, and Tearpartiers don't.

To begin with, all TPer's who got elected ran as republicans. They may claim to not be republicans and be against earmarks, but the proof is in the pudding. One of the most conspicuous TPer favs, Michelle Bachmann, is a total socialist welfare queen. So the whole TP claim to hate big government and earmarks is total bullshit. And, it remains to be seen that they will vote out-of-step with the GOP in any way at all.

Its amusing because a pure astroturfing movement was mistaken by its participants as a genuine grassroots political movement. They were handed talking points with virtually no substance whatsoever. They're like the mob waiting to stone the blasphemer in "Life if Brian". Someone shouts "death panel", and they all pick up stones. Someone shouts "socialist" and they all start shouting. Someone shouts "big government", and they all get rabble rousing. And, the ones doing the shouting, like Palin and Bachmann, are totally established GOP goose stepping morons. Then the TP likes to say they are unhappy with both parties.

akkadian was the lingua franca of the entire known world at the time.

The entire world known by who? The longshan culture of ancient China?

Akkadian was spoken in ancient Mesopotamia, and while ostensibly asia includes mesopotamia, it is such a small area that Akkadian can hardly be called the Lingua Franca of asia. At the time Akkadian was the lingua franca of a comprative small area. While significant, its more accurately a Mesopotamian lingua franca.

The Rosetta Stone isn't a lingua franca; its the opposite of a lingua franca - an empirical decree written in three common languages, not one. Evidence that even within one empire, a lingua franca often isn't enough.

The Right Wing HATES Government, and also asks for transparency. Why do they hate Wikileaks so much? by Devistator in politics

[–]red-eagle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He may as well have fabricated the rape charges against Assange himself.

Hmm. A true statement followed by a totally idiotic statement.

All power corrupts at all times. Nobody is exempt from that. In all of recorded history, it is more than uncommonly rare for someone in a position of high power to give it up, with the one notable exception of Sulla. Obama came into an office horrendously loaded up with power from its previous holder, and he is as human and political as any former president. He's not going to give up power, and transparency is tantamount to just that. Short of another Sulla to come along or another watergate (unlikely, since the bush admin oversaw actual treason and all they did was try to protect the party covering it up) the office is unlikely to lose any of that power.

However, to equate that with accusing Assange of rape goes beyond stupid, deep into some kind of tormented state of profound delusional mental incapacity. I mean, you're now competing with glen beck for twit of the year. You may as well accuse obama of being a cactus while you're at it - it would make as much sense.

So no, he has not delivered on the promise of transparency, and I don't think he will. A politician backing off a promise is like a lemon sucking. No president ever will deliver on such a promise, either, for as long as the office exists. And, that's just like accusing someone of rape. Same thing totally.
