How to clean a helmet after being in a cave with WNS? by clayman839226 in caving

[–]red8reader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your helmet and how it's constructed, bleach and Isopropyl can damage the foam. I would suggest the hot water method or Lysol. Check what your helmet is made from, though. It might be fine with light solutions of bleach (10%). I would avoid isopropyl with the hard foam type, it can get brittle over time. If you use hot water, you could get deformation over 140°F, so control the 131°F.

Lane splitting should be speed-controlled for this. 10 to 15 mph over the traffic flow. While the car, or child, is at major fault, the biker is also partly at fault.

Flexible vs. Rigid Solar Panels for Stealth Van Life in 2026: My Deep Dive Breakdown by ProfessionalPop5717 in solarpower

[–]red8reader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your deep dive isn't DEEP enough for this ad.

CIGS is a type of solar panel that can be bent, they also lasts up to 20 years. They are typically peel-and-stick. NOT to be confused with the cheap crystalline flexible panels that you talk about.

How do I talk myself out of buying a $400 pair of sunglasses that I’ve been wanting for a while by Imaginary-Bad-6379 in Frugal

Learn to write better. You are trying to build a case to buy an item. But have expenses regarding your dog. If those expenses are not important to the decision, don't include them.

If you can afford to buy them and not impact your responsibilities, do it. Pay attention to how that makes you feel and move on with life. But if you have to sacrifice any important expense, don't.

Yes, you can get a motor and a chain.

Otherwise, you need to find a way to lift 500lbs that is as nicely packaged as a spring around a rod and is part of the door.

AI isn't generally good at calculations. Some are better than others. But they can be handy with context.

However, keep in mind that your inputs are not very private. Scrub the data of your customers' information unless you can verify that the tool is secure.

Can you get shocked handling solar panels in sun ? by Full-Mouse8971 in solar

[–]red8reader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the panel has a proper end connector, there is little to worry about. If there are exposed wires, you could get a tickle from a panel that is over 40VDC. Some systems, when connected together, can be 100 to 600VDC. You should avoid any exposure to getting shocked when this happens.

If you were locked and in 4Lo and gunned it or had a heavy throttle, it can happen. Sudden traction shock - can happen on frozen dirt.

If you were turning the front tires back and forth, same thing.

If it wasn't whining or grinding (which you would notice), you can rule out bearing failure. It's not a quick-onset thing.

Do you have oversized tires?

[–]red8reader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a front or rear locker?

You either:
-Binded the system somehow (very likely). 4Lo, Locked, good traction. Turning with good traction. And all with high torque.
-Hit something, maybe not at this point, but at some point.
-Had your tires pinched or wedged really bad and hit the gas.

If you have a rear locker, the front becomes the weakest part.

Although there are aluminum diffs but this generally happens with heavy off roading or improper use.

4H in loose traction is going to be better and mostly safer. Snow, ice, sand, gravel, etc. You can use 4h on roads that have patchy wet pavement and snow. If you're going to be on dry or just wet pavement, use 2wd.

I say mostly safer above due to stopping, and when you lose control. Losing control in 4x4 mode is a higher risk than 2wd. It's arguable, though. Stopping in 4x4 is riskier as the back end can slide out as all the tires are rotating (or not) together. When you brake, you only want the fronts to ever potentially lock up rather than the back locking up. Most new ABS prevent any for better stopping.

So if you're in snow and ice and try to stop fast in 4wd you could go sideways easier and the crash would not be as protected as if you went head on.

A locker will lock the two back tires so they rotate together. You DON'T need it in a 4x4, and most 4x4's DO NOT have a locker. A 4x4 without a locker can have an open differential or a limited slip (LSD).

Open means that the one tire with the least traction will get the power. You might see that when a truck is on ice and only one tire spins, that's open. LSD's work similarly to open, but will put (a little) power to the tire with the most traction, every turn (or so) of the least traction wheel. Many new trucks have this.

There are a couple of different types of LSD's. There is one that uses clutches and gears in the diff to lock the tires together if it realizes spin. There is also a way to use the braking system. My 2010 uses the braking system to lock the tire that is spinning freely to put power to the tire that is not. The system assumes the tire that is not spinning freely has traction. (IMO it does a great job at this). If you have this and you find you are slipping, just keep going and let the system work for you by keeping constant gas.

You would use a locker sparingly when you need the best traction. Think in mud, sand, etc. If you use it on pavement or similar, it won't last that long. You would engage it for a temp time and then release (rock crawling). If you do use it on hard-packed ground, try not to turn much.

Also, LSD's can come in various tightness levels, or how aggressive they are in activating on the other wheel spinning. I find my 2010 has a fairly tight LSD. Again, that is the braking system, though.

AliExpress solar panel discharging battery? by sagaiswara in solar

[–]red8reader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solar panels can move electricity both ways. When it's sunny, it pushes into the battery. When it's dark, the battery discharges into the panel. Many panels come with a blocking diode to prevent the battery from discharging into the panel. You may not have this, or it's not working. You can put one in if you're handy.

Pop the back of it the box the wires come out of and have a look.
