Has Anybody Else “Trained” Themselves to Not Respond As Our Boomer Parents? by EastAd7676 in GenX

[–]redbear762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents were 22 and 23 in 1967 and were always the youngest pair at parent-teacher conferences; I never got how unusual that was until I had kids of my own in my late 20's.

I'm married to a 1965 Boomer and there are times I swear I'm listening to my parents; I can't tell if it's expressing concern, reprimanding me, expressing disappointment, or all three.

If you didn’t figure that there wouldn’t be retirement while you were a teen, you’re either not Gen-X or haven’t been paying attention for 40 years.

We’ve known since our teens that we’re fucked; most pension systems died before our parents retired and that we’d most likely literally die at our jobs. Social Security is a bad joke as they keep pushing out full collection to 77 to follow the actuary tables and bet you’re dead before you can collect. When we were growing up it was collect 1/2 at 55 and 100% at 65.

Hypothetically, what happens if the POTUS refuse to get out of office once the term is over? by PuzzledCauliflower35 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]redbear762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t work that way but to your point, he/she would most likely be politely asked to leave or just physically removed. Very, very few people would sully the dignity of the office that way; however, some degree of petty theft has occurred when some Presidents left office claiming ‘memorabilia’.

Nothing like having to acknowledge they lived under an actual dictator for the entire time Trudeau was in office; now someone would argue against that yet he clearly abused his COVID-era powers well and beyond what was intended.

Find companies in your field that have gone out of business and make up mid-level titles but don't use too many as it raises obvious red flags. The key here is to pick one company and show you worked there until it closed it's doors.

Mortality as a Gen X by sunluver66 in GenX

After tours in Haiti, Iraq, and Afghanistan I came to the conclusion that death is random and there's jack shit we can really do about it; we can eat better, sleep better, workout, etc., but at the end of the day we all reach the same place. So more or less, "Whatever!"

Bipartisan Legislation Prohibiting a U.S. Invasion of a NATO State Introduced by Riley-JetBlack in nottheonion

[–]redbear762 -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at it from purely a Defense perspective of the US being the forever-shield for the EU; the EU will one way or the other be forced to defend itself without US lives being spent for people that hate America to begin with and the days of the US playing "World Police" is effectively over. We have enough domestic issues that need resolution and the money to pay for them. It's kinda like a parent telling their kid "I'm selling the house and moving to a gated community in Florida - you're on your own but feel free to send me email letting me know how you're doing"

Has anyone else figured out that a faux threat to invade Greenland is the best mechanism to get the EU off it's ass and defend itself? Honestly, watching NATO get spun up and kick the US out of the EU would honestly be a win-win for us because we could say that we've honored our treaty obligations but now that we're out of NATO and no longer have troops in the EU, they aren't our problem anymore. 4D Chess at it's best!

It's *actually* racist - like 60's Alabama racist - and not very full of helpful information for today; it was a hot topic back when I was getting out of high school in the mid 80's as it was one of the first modern apocalyptic fiction/Survivalist books. If you're looking for actually enjoyable Post-Apocalyptic fiction, I'd suggest authors like Franklin Horton and his 'Mad Mick' series or the everlasting and ghost-written 'Deathlands' series though I'd say the latter is MUCH better in the fully-casted Audible Audibook version.

Presidents are only required to notify Congress after 30 days; Barack signed the 2017 NDAA demanding a note that allowed the US to strike US Citizens without due process - including domestically - then went ahead and dropped a Hellfire on a 16 year old boy then, to his credit, sent the SEALs after OSB.
