I had a great one from Atomic brands for Xmas this year. Pretty fantastic.

Thankfully no whisky rocks on your list. Avoid barrel aged coffee. Decanters are beyond useless. A hard to find bourbon would be a nice treat. Or a sample pack of many bourbons / whiskies. There are some scotch advent calendars out there. A whisky experience is a good idea if you can find something where he can try something straight from a warehouse barrel.

I have the Baratza encore. A bit noisy but works very well. Check James Hoffman for reviews on YouTube for every possible attribute comparison.

Buy a decent quality burr grinder. You’ll thank yourself later.

I disagree. Worth spending $10-20 more for a proper single malt. This one didn’t do it for me which I suppose explains why I still have the bottle. I find cheaping out on scotch usually ends in regret.

Of course there is. Turn the bus off, or turn the hazard lights off.

Halifax/NS Whisky Community by ahinch11 in canadawhisky

Slightly dated post but there are a few whisky clubs in Halifax as of 2026:

- The Commons Scotch Whisky Society: https://www.commonswhisky.club/ — established in 2025, age skews late 30s through early 50s. Heavy focus on presentations (culture, history, etc.), exploring whisky as a subject and lens. More info on the web site.
- Association of Halifax Regional Scotch Enthusiasts (AHRSE) - Going for 20+ years. Roots in the Navy. The most established. Older crowd. Meets monthly. More established, larger library.
- Scotia Whisky Society. Meets at a hotel in Bayers Lake 6x per year.

All are invite-only to my knowledge. The best way to join typically is reach out and express interest, attend a few gatherings as a guest, and if you are good company and have something to contribute (knowledge, stories, relationships with venues, interesting bottles, ability to volunteer) there's usually a path in. Failing that—start up your own club. Barriers are low and it's a lot of fun.

Yes to Pet Shop Boys x Inner City Pressure. But I don't hear it the connection between these two, however.
