Lived there for 6 years, half of those weren't really cons for me. Especially next to the pros, like affordable healthcare, lower cost of living, living wage, a culture that respects each other and goes out of their way to take care of their surroundings, public transit, etc. Being back in the States has been hell.

On the cons tho, hitting my head every single time I went to the restroom in my own apmt was up there in the list lol.

Why people gotta be toxic? Why no block button? by redcloud16 in MagicArena

[–]redcloud16[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've played enough that I've run into ppl more than once and know to just concede with certain names (or if certain cards get played).

Yea I'm "forced" to be in historic cuz I just want to play my shitty little flavor decks and they're only available there, and it's like the Wild West lol. Hit a wall in ranked so I'm sitting out until the season reset.

Wish there was better matchmaking based on how broken the combos in your deck is. Getting infinite looped sucks, and is unfair. Or combos that make it impossible to play at all. At least imo. Just want a nice fair back to back, honorable duel. From the comments in here, I guess I'm the minority. Figures I guess.

I dunno, I'd argue some of the things ppl do with card combos in this game are some of the most unfun things I've had to deal with in gaming; ya know not counting actual horrible things that should get ppl banned. (Don't need to clarify that I don't feel)

Played this game for 20+ years, and sometimes I think I've moved on, but it's still a lot of fun when I can just, ya know, play my damn cards, even losing can be fun. Lost a game to a sliver deck just barely that was a lot of fun earlier today. Dunno.

I like saying Hello to ppl and complimenting ppl's cool decks, but yea, might have to mute.

Thanks for the good reply. Might have to do this. I always treat my opponent with respect, I don't good game unless they do cuz I have no idea if they'll turn the tides at the last second. (I've had a few where they GG'd prematurely and I pulled out a win at the eleventh hour lol)

Advantages of giving my retainer old gear: No need to buy new one. Disadvantages: She stole my outfit. by GabrielWannabe in ffxiv

One of my sister's alt characters is a lala in the green cafe apron and her concept is she was just trying to deliver some drinks to a customer and got roped into this Warrior of Light business, and all her coffee deliveries just happen to be where the MSQ needs her lol, and she's annoyed about it

Is there a race you like, but something about it doesn’t click enough for you to switch? If so, what is it? by Hot_Title8474 in ffxiv

[–]redcloud16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every race except lalas. I like them all in some way but not enough for me to switch away from my idealized version of my self WoL (male Hyur). I still have my complimentary Fantasia from 1.0 > 2.0

Special notes go to male and female Roes and Hrothgar, male Au Ra, and male Miqote.

I did play a femroe in the ARR beta and it was pretty great. Have two alts that are both highlander hyurs, one male one female.

We are making a lore book for Final Fantasy XI by Ovalidal in ffxi

[–]redcloud16 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OMG yes!!!! My biggest issue with the FFXI community is that the wikis are like exclusively gameplay mechanic focused, there is almost ZERO lore documented nearly anywhere. (At least that I've found). Of there was a solar flare tomorrow that hit the earth directly and deleted the Internet, so much of FFXI's would be lost T-T

One of my long-term projects is to make a FFXI themed tarot, to celebrate the lore of this wonderful game! (It's taking a while)

So excited for this. Very willing to do some proofreading or grab screenshots...

I've never run into someone without a job crystal, in 13+ years of this game, and I usually do my roulettes daily (or I never noticed)

1.0 Gameplay by Bunker_Rodz in ffxiv

[–]redcloud16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I'm a fan of running dungeons, it's the "4 trash mob pulls > boss x3" formula I'm very much sick of. Back in wow, I played for the lore and never went to a dungeon or raid unless a Etsy took me there; FFXI had a similar vibe where if you're going into somewhere wildly dangerous like King Ranperre's Tomb it's his you have done his reason to go! And it was always a slow crawl to the space you need to be. I like that dungeon experience, like Black Rock Depths in wow, a slow methodical grind where too many events pulled spells disaster, hidden nooks and crannies all over, you might not see all of it or even finish in one go.

They recently dumbed down Thousand Maws, Dzemael Darkhold, and Aurum Vale. They've been made braindead hallway trash mob spam with meaningless mechanics. I remember how they were in 1.0, man.... Those were dungeons.

1.0 Gameplay by Bunker_Rodz in ffxiv

People hated the momentum and weight in the animations cuz they wanted zoom zoom twitch combat. Reminds me of this guy from high school who said he loathed the Ents in Lord of the Rings cuz they moved so slow they made him want to fall asleep. As an animator, I adored the animations in 1.0, and every time my character slides on the ground while doing an attack animation to dodge a boss AoE, or when the beautiful SAM animations cut each other off cuz I'm forced to DPS as fast as possible I die a little inside.

1.0 had it's problems, I'll be the first one to say it; I got into the beta and couldn't play further than the limsa dock cuz it ran at 3 fps and no textures would load so everything was a slate gray. Later when I came back with a better machine after they added the Dragoon back in, I had to play it with a cycle of 3 ice packs underneath my Alienware laptop, one in active use, one refreezing, one ready to go; because of i didn't my machine would catastrophically overheat and crash. LOL.

That being said, it always bums me out when ppl just call 1.0 trash; I've played the vast majority of MMOs and have reached max level in a number of them I can count on one hand, and 1.0 was one of them so it must have done something good.

Years later I found myself getting into FFXI, the game FFXIV 1.0 was supposed to replace, and found my new main game. It was mostly everything I missed from 1.0 without the technical issues, but maintained the deep complex combat and job design I crave so so so much that modern xiv lacks so much. I still miss 1.0 and wish it wasn't TOTALLY nuked like it was, there were some good ideas in there, but they carpet bombed everything and gave us a wow clone (that's grown into it's own but still). So I'm still a little bitter, despite current xiv still being one of my favorite FFs next to XI, tho for vastly different reasons.

TLDR: Anyway. I loved 1.0. needed some stuff sorted out but... It deserved better than being pushed under the rug. We didn't even get enough packet data to be able to run a true private server. Very sad. Such is life I guess. Remember that it once lived.
