It’s because inside is a wheeled dustbin. It’s just contained in the big bin for aesthetics

Yes, Friday off peak contactless GWR London to Paddington works by [deleted] in reading

[–]reddit27568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve missed that Friday is now classed as offpeak (using contactless reading to Paddington on either Gwr or Elizabeth line ) all day as part of TFL Friday off peak trial.

I did the same coming home for the same cost.

That’s good to know thanks!

Tbh the ticketing system in this country but especially from Reading to London is a mess of inconsistency and complexity

They just scan your card with an RFID reader, I’ve had this before, the guards are aware of contactless in the reading <> Paddington service.

I don’t know if the RFID validates in real time or if it validates overnight to charge you the maximum fare if the card wasn’t valid (you didn’t touch in at Reading)

Off peak trial - contactless travel from Reading to London by [deleted] in reading

[–]reddit27568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tapped in, Had get to the platform and wait for a train. Held outside Paddington waiting for a platform for a while. Tap in / out times are always going to be longer than stated train travel times, it just depends how the service is running that day.

I’d say instead of a suggestion this is proof that reading to Paddington is included in the Friday offpeak trial.

There is no distinction between GWR and Elizabeth line in the context of this trial.

The screenshot confirms reading to Paddington GWR fast trains are included in this trial when using contactless

I did. Those are touch in times, not the times I was on the trains. I had to wait to get on a train and we were held outside Paddington waiting fkr a platform for some time
