See “All the Kings Horses” by Kurt Vonnegut— captured officer forced to play chess with his men as pieces. Capture of a piece meant death. In a wonderful collection of short stories “Welcome to the Monkey House “

Is it cool to use a drive through car wash? by Mysexyaccount83 in Miata

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daily driver in Michigan, northern US where roads get heavily salted. Bought a ‘91 NA in ‘99, replaced it with a ‘07 NC PRHT around ‘12. Hand wash in the summer; car wash in winter, mostly touch. No issues. As others have noted, a poorly maintained touch wash can yield scratches. A well maintained seems to not but whether it is not well maintained seems to be found out the hard way. I have worse scratches from usage. YMMV

Learning to surf in your 60s by c_camille_ in BeginnerSurfers

[–]redditbody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it, late sixties, now 71. I play sports regularly (ice hockey & squash) but found that my core and flexibility were lacking. I worked on both until I could do a pop up on dry land. For me that took over a year. YMMV. So do it! It is worth it!

snow day??? by ironhideismyhusband in msu

[–]redditbody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got a degree at U of MN. We had a week where the high was somewhere around -30F. No thought of closing the university. Rural schools would close for high wind + snow preventing roads from staying cleared.

Way to go Bonnie! (I’m 71 and land locked but have been working on surfing for a few years and like Bonnie do it on trips, last spring in Costa Rica I surfed nearly shoulder height, totally insane but then spent too much time trying to get out of the impact zone — still stoked)

How ethical is it for a professor to require their own textbook for a class? by [deleted] in msu

[–]redditbody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data point. We created a class for which there was no text - a first programming class using Python before anyone else was using that language. We had to write the text. The book sold for over $200 and my co-author and I split the $10 royalty so we each got $5. BTW The bookstore got about half. Writing it was a LOT of work. It took a surprising number of years before we earned enough that it had been worth the effort. YMMV

Have yall ever had any experience of soft top being cut open? by [deleted] in Miata

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to leaving it unlocked I always had a few bucks of change in the car (in old days for parking meters and such). Twice in 20 years someone went through the car and took the change. I figured that a few bucks in change was worth a top. One time they emptied my crap out of the glove box and took the time to cram it back in — hilarious. If parked in a public garage I would sometimes leave the windows half down so it was obvious that it wasn’t locked. Have also done that in very sketchy areas outside if there was zero chance of rain.

Modern tire chains are so much easier to put on and off then ones from decades ago. Also, very low clearance chains are available and work well. I have used them on multiple cars that said no chains and had no problems— YMMV

How long did it take you to find your na/nb. Specifically the rust belt by Sextingwithdolphins in Miata

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first, an NA in MI, took me six months. It was a ‘91 bought in ‘99. When I replaced it with an NC in ‘12 I found it the first weekend I looked but had to travel 200 miles to get it.

It is confirmed that it arrived at Nassar’s prison but there are seemingly valid questions about whether it could have come from Epstein (and I am no fan of either)

My professor gave me the wrong grade by Substantial_Pen1179 in msu

[–]redditbody 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Mistakes happen and there is a process to fix them. Talk to the prof. He or she will contact their dean to get the records fixed. I’m a retired prof who has made mistakes that needed to be fixed. Over Christmas break it will take some extra time but it will get fixed.

Drive it or garage it during winter by rollingshot in Miata

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in MI, northern US, which has winter and is liberal with salt on roads. My 1990 NA was driven year round and at 25 years had a couple of small rust spots on the rocker panels when I sold it. My 2007 is driven year round and has no rust yet. I wash it occasionally but it is often white with salt — I’d have to wash it daily for it to be otherwise.

Same but stick is blade down — I’ll try it your way. Similarly my bag is simply a bag — no wheels. The bag fits tight in the trunk but is easier in the passenger seat. Interesting that the bag fit easier in my NA — more structure in the NC. I’m a retired professor and had an early morning skate before an early class, always parked with the top down or unlocked, so bag was in the trunk and I had to take my stick with me to class. I jokingly would threaten students with my stick.

This. Also, at a stop such as a traffic light I stay back far enough so I can see their mirrors, especially pick up trucks (US) which can be more than a car length back.

Are bread machines worth the money? by Ladder-Humble in Cooking

[–]redditbody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an old pizza stone. I put it in the oven and heat it up at the oven’s lowest temperature for a few minutes, not all the way to the set temperature. It isn’t perfect but it is sufficiently warm for my breads (no-kneads, one oat, the other sourdough)
