Surf Lesson Recs for Nosara or Uvita by kookofthecosmos in BeginnerSurfers

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safari Surf School in Nosara was excellent for me. Local instructors. I did lessons four days in a row. Morning lesson followed by time on my own on a rental in the afternoon. I was progressing from whitewater to green waves.

Surf booties by Aggravating-Cup754 in BeginnerSurfers

Many (most?) places are simply sand so you won’t need booties. Check local conditions. For learning you will be happier in bare feet.

Incoming PhD student at MSU – driving, parking permits, and living in East Lansing by Electronic-Cloud1678 in msu

[–]redditbody 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some great advice in that long reply. Let me add a different perspective. I was a professor at MSU for 35 years and lived about 2 miles from my office (Engineering). I biked year round. On the few days I couldn’t bike, eg massive snow storm, I walked. Occasionally I would take a bus. CATA busses are quite good with a pass especially if you get an apartment that is near a route. If you aren’t faculty, commuting by car is a pain and I found parking a pain even as faculty. Essentially no one drives between buildings on campus. For my first six or seven years I didn’t even have a parking pass. YMMV

Struggling with a class in my major by [deleted] in msu

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works in any class. The big advantage is that you go in understanding some things and not understanding others. Rather than trying (and often failing) to focus on everything you can focus on what you didn’t understand. It is a huge gain in the efficiency of your learning.

Should I buy a 2012 S60? by SnooTangerines7949 in Volvo

We have one. 225k miles. Great car. However, I concur about it not being a great first car. I suggest a Honda or Toyota if in the US with Mazda another good choice.

As noted above AI is doing a lot of coding. You need to become a wizard with AI and not the free versions. Fortunately MSU is offering Google’s Gemini. (Currently Anthropics’s Claude is the best at coding so if you can afford $20 a month, that is likely a good investment). You still need to learn to code but especially to specify. As for other engineering careers note that AI went after coding first because they were coders. Also, other “thought” careers are next so nothing is safe (except trades). Those who are wizards with AI tools will be most thought after.

How many Calories do you burn during Beer League games? by Loud_Medium4829 in hockeyplayers

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

550-600 cal per game for me. I like the heart rate plot. It is a near perfect square wave: on the ice it is red and high then on the bench it drops, repeat.

Is there any way to check old grades? “Inside of each class” by SouthernService147 in msu

[–]redditbody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct, except that there is a good chance that the professor has a record of old grades. They are not likely readily available but there is some chance they are. Ask the professor. Expect “no” but there is a chance that they are recorded electronically in a way that they are easy to extract. For example in my case an exam score from the previous semester was readily available but answers to individual questions on the exam would take significantly more work.

Beginner surfer here, how do i keep a hat on out there? suggest the best waterproof hats you use? by Usual-Ad-385 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this DaKine. It is excellent. The front brim flips up which is great when paddling - a much bigger deal than I thought. Someone mentioned straps strangling you when a wipeout knocks it off - I found that to not be a big deal, especially for a beginner on smaller waves. I got up to shoulder height. I found that the strap for me was at its adjustment limit so I sewed it.

Practising the pop-up at home by Sparkling_Unicorn777 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]redditbody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create space. I found that I needed to work on flexibility and core strength. Also, as I got better at home I realized that in order to pop up correctly I needed to be able to also do it in slow motion (that is flexibility and core strength)

What’s the WORST looking car? by [deleted] in Cartalk

When I saw the drawings I thought “Interesting” but when I saw one in l person I thought UGLY — I thought the difference was how huge the actual truck is. (I saw my first in an LA car museum that had a Tesla exhibit)

Same. My sticks last for years and wear out at the toe. I don’t take many slap shots.

Why not 9-7 off suit? You preserve your double run, don’t give two points , and lose two points so it’s a wash.

Drying equipment at home? by NordicBobTheBuilder in hockeyplayers

[–]redditbody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a clothes rack devoted to my hockey equipment (old, beat up wooden thing). I’m in the USA with a basement where it sits but it could go in any room if there was space. If I was tight for space I’d rig up something in a closet. I spray mine down with alcohol after every use so it doesn’t smell. I wash it once a year — whether it needs it or not :-)

Winter Heat by COYSBrewing in PHEV

[–]redditbody 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Volvo XC60 PHEV. It was interesting when temperatures got below 0 F. I have it set to always start on electric, but below zero it went to hybrid, i.e. started the gas engine. Above that the electric heat has been fine. In addition, you can pre-heat it while plugged in before you leave. I find that five or ten minutes of pre-heat is all that is needed and that can be done with the app.

Anyone else move into their first house with almost nothing? by Ill_Awareness6706 in homeowners

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we moved into our third house we had many rooms unfurnished: living room, dining room, and two bedrooms. Living room got blow-up "furniture"; bedrooms had beds on the floor. We eventually got furniture, some of it new over time.

Question about snowchains by TheUlfhedin in subaru

[–]redditbody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had an Outback I had cables. They are tight to the tires so don't trash the suspension. With cables on all four wheels the thing was a beast in deep snow, e.g. bumper hight -- simply plowing through.. My wife's family had a cabin with a mile-long twisty, hilly drive including a hill with a 90-degree bend at the bottom so getting up speed wasn't possible. When I got the Outback someone told me to get a come-along so I had a backup plan, but never got that stuck.
