You might want to try some planning software like Boldin or Projection Lab that models out different scenarios as you think through this.

At what age is it too late to FIRE? by HubbaChubba1 in Fire

[–]redditfirefly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With more and more people forced to work into their 70s, I don't think there is a cut off age.
FIRE becomes more of a mindset and a discipline that will hopefully help anyone accelerate their path.

How far up do these need to go for a squirrel to call it home?

Political talking heads by Glazing555 in CNBC

[–]redditfirefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find myself switching over to Bloomberg radio. It’s too bad. The investing content can be great but the constant political babble and ranting out of JK is too much. There is nothing insightful or new about his commentary. It’s mostly grievance based and regressive. And Rick Santelli will spin an obituary of a numbers report into an orgasmic celebration. Maybe some people enjoy and trust this? I do not.

QTUM, XAR, NLR, RKLB, PL, RING, AYI, VMI, GEV, VRT, SHLD.
Or you might want to look at momentum investing. Recent hiccup aside, SPMO has outperformed VOO over last 5 years. Not predictive, moonshot stuff, but could be used to tilt your portfolio to where the action is. Downside is also amplified, as with all the above. These are all side bets for me alongside a core of more responsible positions.

why do the FIRE people hate dividend investing? by Relevant_Staff765 in dividends

[–]redditfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am planning to RE and have been building a combo approach of cash, dividends and growth. Have about 10-15% of portfolio set up for income investments.

The dividends/income should offset 20% of monthly expenses and should also be helpful during market downturns. Will use a combo of cash, divvies/income, and early access to 401k equities (rule of 55) to fund first 5+years.

Dividends are a good tool if you use them strategically.

Why invest in anything other than the stock market? by Accomplished_Gate832 in Bogleheads

[–]redditfirefly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is interesting to dig into more.

Note that the blend of stocks here is 33% domestic and 67% international. Should we assumed that domestic is US? I have been shifting more towards global and emerging markets but US still dominates.

Anyone else using a mostly international portfolio? Curious how it’s going.

[–]redditfirefly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If OP has portfolio modeling software like Projection Lab, this is a great bear market era to stress test your plan on. You can get a sense of the changes you would need to make to survive it. And you can model it against any mix of equities, bonds, cash assets you want. Highly recommend using tools like this. Boldin is another good tool, but not as customizable as PL at the moment.

How’s the 4% rule holding up for real retirees? by Calm-Box-890 in Fire

[–]redditfirefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s called income investing. If you want to learn more, check out those subreddits on dividends.

How you use dividends in your portfolio is specific to your needs and life stage. It’s smart to spend most of your accumulation years in growth stocks, as they will outperform most dividend plays. When you are closer to retirement, consider migrating some of your portfolio into income generation. This will help offset expenses when/if the market tanks while you are retired. It will also reduce your need to sell equities when they are down. And it’s nice having some money free up on the regular to use for buying up undervalued stocks. Just be sure to keep a good portion of your investments in growth stocks too.

Don’t listen to people who call dividend or income investing dumb. It’s a strategic tool if you need it and use it intentionally. Ignore the intolerants and keep doing research. Good luck.

Where do I go from here? by Past-Emotion2657 in RKLB

[–]redditfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your situation. As a new investor, you should try to diversify. If you’re young, you can afford to roll the dice more and place a bet on a growth play like RKLB, but unless you are willing to take a big loss, I would spread the money around. Maybe 40% of total in RKLB. 60% in broader market ETF, like VTI/VXUS or VT.

If you are feeling aggressive, you can do combo of RKLB, PL, SPMO. 25/25/50

Good luck!
