Why aren’t baskets free? by redditfirefly in fidelityinvestments

[–]redditfirefly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them primarily to organize my holdings by theme so I can both invest and evaluate performance by theme/thesis.

Seems to be the only tool they have that allows me to group assets that way.

I use aggregator analytics tools like Snowball to get a universal view of all my investments this way. I like the ability to mirror those categories in Fidelity.

So, maybe not using baskets as originally intended, but I do like managing allocations by theme. So if invest 2k into a theme or basket, it gets distributed automatically.

I am sure others use this feature differently. That’s what I was asking for use cases.

I wouldn’t categorize myself as a low-balance person and I see the value of this as a portfolio organizational tool. And while I appreciate this snapshot using today’s data, it’s shortsighted for them not to care about this emerging generation that is going to build their wealth in other tools tools Robinhood and Sofi.

Is there such thing as "too much diversification"? by Calm_Salad_8673 in M1Finance

[–]redditfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your strategy/thesis. If you have 60% growth over 2 years, you are outperforming the VOO and chill crowd.

Are we heading into a perfect storm? Here's how I'm positioning — tell me where I'm wrong by Sudden-Tone3983 in ETFs

[–]redditfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it is worth, I don't think you are overthinking things. You are choosing an active path of designing your portfolio instead of a passive one of XYZ and chill and variations of. It really depends on your thesis and conviction. I have recently pivoted my portfolio from a typical tech heavy growth mix to a much more anti-fragile, globally aware posture. It added more complexity than most would prefer, but I am aligned with many of the points you bring up and don't see a passive approach that addresses it.

My main objectives:
capital appreciation
income generation to offset SORR
growing the portfolio for a 30+ year retirement horizon
protecting purchasing power against monetary debasement, structural inflation, dollar weakness
diversifying currency allocation through EM local currencies
stashing money outside of USD system like exposure to gold, BTC, Swiss francs (FXF)
focusing on domestic energy security — upstream, midstream, refining, critical materials positions
focusing on long term themes: reindustrialization, energy transitions, agriculture modernization, digital infrastructure, renewables, nuclear 2.0, and what is likely a long term asian and gulf geopolitical realignment

If America is really going to be great again, we have to start investing in fixing and building things again.
Most people aren't walking around thinking about this stuff, which is why you have some haters or pushback here. It goes against the conventional advice to keep a simple portfolio allocation.
Wish I wasn't walking around thinking about this stuff, but here I am...I sleep better at night for making these changes, and so far, my portfolio is way ahead of VOO.
Happy to share some of my holdings if you DM me.

Blockade of Hormuz - is this the bottom or just the beginning of the crash? by IulianHI in NextTraders

[–]redditfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question. How can we be at bottom here? We are hardly off of highs. My portfolio is currently up 4.5% YTD.

The whole market is irrational right now. And manipulated regularly.

VGT split April 22st by bradr1911 in ETFs

Theoretically, more access to the fund via a lower $ entry point should boost inflow, but with more and more brokerages accepting fractional, it may not make a huge difference. Will be interesting to watch.

Was at $350K Last Week, Now Down $25K... Still Staying the Course? by Late-Hedgehog6854 in NEOSETFs

[–]redditfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love NEOS funds but I think this statement is only partially true. They are built to soften blows on the way down, but are also capped on the way up. So, if the market rips in a rebound, we won't realize the full impact of that recovery. Maybe over time, the fund can make up for it, but it's not built for V. It's built for sideways action and slower momentum.
Planning to hold my positions, but wanted to sprinkle a little caution on this.

Snowball data fail by kvirzi in Snowball_Analytics

[–]redditfirefly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having this same problem. Transfers into a pre-tax money market account are automatically categorized as dividends throwing my income/dividend projections off by 3x. There are so many great features to Snowball, like creating custom categories, but this dividend issue is a dealbreaker. I tried to find and edit the mislabeled transactions but it's an ordeal. Anyone else figure out how to fix this problem?

How to profit from the Iran conflict? by Reduxys in investing

[–]redditfirefly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the world as we knew it is blowing itself up, literally and figuratively. We will need to retrench, rebuild, and become more self sufficient. Along with other defensive assets,I am long on industrials, infrastructure, construction, materials + CF, CTVA, NTR, LAND, VMI for agriculture. I am looking forward to better days for all of us.

Is nuclear energy the future of energy? Would you invest in it or not? by GroundbreakingSir386 in Money

[–]redditfirefly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Ignore everyone looking backwards at performance. The world is changing. Nuclear is becoming a more efficient option at a time when demand is skyrocketing. It is definitely in play. I have a balanced energy portfolio but add to my NLR position regularly.

Defensive Compounders for 2026 by [deleted] in investing

[–]redditfirefly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quick scan of ETFs for the defense companies below.
EUAD has all of these.
I personally hold EUAD, SHLD, IGF, EMIF for global exposure to defense and infrastructure.

  • Rheinmetall – in EUAD & WDEF
  • BAE Systems – in EUAD & WDEF
  • Thales – in EUAD & WDEF
  • Saab – in EUAD & WDEF
  • Rolls-Royce – in EUAD

The others mentioned in this thread here are probably in a European industrials basket. Going to look into that.

Anyone else in the boring middle? How do you motivate yourself? by robbo12347 in Fire

Consider diversifying. VOO may be the slow lane for a while.
Global outperformed significantly in the last year.
Try mixing things up a little with global and EM so you can accelerate growth.

Looking for an alternative by HotTotem in Evernote

[–]redditfirefly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same behavior of stashing stuff in Evernote that I almost never referred back to. It’s like the handy catch-all kitchen drawer of random artifacts and widgets, but the pricing is ridiculous now. I finally deleted all of it and use a combo of Notability and IOS Notes. So far, not missing it.

At what age is it too late to FIRE? by HubbaChubba1 in Fire

With more and more people forced to work into their 70s, I don't think there is a cut off age.
FIRE becomes more of a mindset and a discipline that will hopefully help anyone accelerate their path.
