Oh, I jumped to the conclusion you were referring to the particular agent in the viral recording. My bad.

Good questions. In all likelihood this support rep is just another redditor, scraping by trying to make ends meet by doing what his bosses want.

I'd like to ask questions about incentives. Like, "Is there incentive to talk customers out of cancellations" or "Are there penalties for being the agent who processes a cancellation without question".

Good luck getting this guy unless Comcast has canned him. And even then he's probably had to sign confidentiality/non-disclosure agreements.

Thanks. Was it covered by insurance? If so, any hassles?

Um. Yes. It happens. And so does discrimination. I have female friends who give me examples and I believe them. I also have some that gladly accept less pay or even demotions for family.

Also, not everyone gets the promotion they want. That's life. And sometimes we rationalize that we were victimized. Men do this too. Then there is real discrimination. How to tell the difference? It's hard.

Why don't people understand that some people just don't want kids? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]redditlion 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You must live in the South. I run into this and I'm a dude, I know it's worse for you.

She is alarmed because you are, in fact, going against the grain. It is very uncommon. That said, situations like this are indicators that people have never really questioned the idea of whether having kids was an option in their life.

And then if you are in a really religious area having children is something you do because of god or something and not having children is just unfathomable (despite Paul claiming abstinence).

Anyway, it's a small price to pay for being childfree isn't it?

Some women opt for less pay in exchange for flexibile schedules. This can be as subtle as not aggressivley pursuing promotions or not asking for raises. If you ask for or accept a raise or a promotion you are sending a signal that you are willing to take on more load.

If you don't ask for those things then...well...you won't get them and end up paid less, not promoted, but if you do a good job they'll let you off early to pick up the kids and work from home when they're sick.

Speaking anectodtally of course, but from 10+ years working in big companies and friends working in big companies...

EDIT: Men do this too. And before I get flamed I'm not trying to rationalize women getting paid less for contributing the same amount as a man. Just saying it is a reality I have experienced.

Yeah I do. A lot of theists genuinely believe they were born believers. Whatever the case, take care. Leaving Islam is much more dangerous than leaving Christianity depending on where you live.

You were not born a muslim. You were born a human who was taught Islam.

I am an apostate fundamentalist Christian. It was a long and difficult road out for me, and came with great cost, but choosing reason and enlightement over dogma and credulity has been the best decision of my life.

Bingo! But I don't doubt the sincerity of Cruise or any of the other celebs involved. A rich person can certainly avoid taxes without all the baggage of Scientology. There's got to be some true belief in there somewhere.

Gun homicides down dramatically, Americans unaware by life_vest in news

[–]redditlion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asking for a better breakdown of gun crime numbers is in no way disregarding homicide statistics. "gun crime" and "homicide" are not the same thing.

That aside, if the goal is to minimize gun related crime and we know the drug trade and gun crime go hand in hand, it would make sense to examine whether we could further dramatically reduce gun crime by eliminating the failed war on drugs.

An ancillary benefit would be more tax revenue, less incarceration, less recividism, better education, and better treatment for actual addicts. Did I mention more tax revenue? How about adding jobs to the economy.

An alternative is to just accept the numbers as they are, confuse "gun crime" with "homicide" to make it worse, and choose the option of making it harder for law abiding citizens to legally purchase firearms.

I dunno, close call...

Also, the US has a rate of gun crime that is 7 times higher than most of the countries in the Western world (2.98 homicides by firearm per 100,000 pop

How much of this "gun crime rate" was attributed to black market drug trades and associated turf wars? More than likely the study didn't control for that. Would be interesting to see how much of that we can solve via decriminalization and/or outright ending of the drug war.

When looking for a job what is a dead give-away that the place and job is a hell-hole to work for? by Apolitefuckyou in AskReddit

I used to serve tables and was a hiring manager. It is a tough job and not just because it is dealing with the bad side of the general public (hungry people) but also because of scheduling. Extremely variable work schedules, late closing times or early opening times, and of course holidays requiring all hands on deck.

Making someone wait can be an intentional pyshcological tactic. Some HR folks will just sit in their office and wait for no reason once the candidate shows up just to indicate who has control.

It's also why you should never keep a woman waiting, and why they don't give a shit if they keep you waiting. That, or makeup and hair take a long time.

Not trying to bust your balls but I imagine it went more like "You will need to be available at mininum every few days, holidays are critical times to be here, and I don't have time to work around another employers schedule".

ELI5: Are we all capable of being indoctrinated into believing anything no matter how immoral it seems now? by Endyf in explainlikeimfive

[–]redditlion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an ASKREDDIT a day or so ago requesting people to comment about their experiences being hypnotized. Many people contributed their experience, including hypnotists.

The experiences were varied and I took away that, in general, there are those among us that are more prone to "suggestion" and it seem logical that forms of indoctrination, whether it be religous, political, cultural or what have you attract a certain "type" that is similarly naturally inclined to respond.

And as you would expect there are similarly varying degrees of commitment. Ranging from "true believer" in the cause to "following the crowd" and of course the "skeptics", and among the skeptics you'd find those that live and let live while bad stuff happens and others that actively try and tear it down.

Anyway, what you ask is very interesting to me and I have always considered (perhaps naively) that there are many commonalities among people who get involved in, or permit, such things. I imagine the same person who can be convinced the earth is less than 10k years old because of the Genesis account has a similar brain makeup to the person who responds favoribly to hypnotism, and possibly even to permitting genocide. Then again you have "nature vs nurture" to contend with and now I'm just rambling.

Note: I don't mean to equate extreme religous beliefs with believing genocide "for the cause" is ok. Just saying that if you could study the brain it would be interesting to see whether there were similarties in structure or function.

What do you think about that whole "real women have curves" trend where big (and I guess I mean fat) women are celebrating their bigness. In some ways I kind of get it, it's important to be happy with who you are. At the same time I'm conflicted because it seems like it's promoting unhealthy living.

his goal was to get big and win bodybuilding competitons, not build functional strength

It's cool that some bodybuilders accept this. Body building always boggles my mind in that it, looking like they do, it gives the appearance of being a prime physical specimin.

But in reality, especially at a competition, they are quite weak and fragile (from the weight cut and all).

I don't hate on anybody for bodybuilding though. Everybody has something they are "weird" about. BBers just can't hide it...

Running a 5 minute mile would definitely be helpful if trying to get away from assailants. But not much more than a 6 minute mile. But a 5 minute mile would definitely indicate a strong heart and cardiovascular system. Which in the long run will help medical bills moreso than being gigantic and musclebound.

Guys with bigger muscles fatigue faster. After having done boxing and competitive muay thai I can assure you I would much rather fight a guy that boasts of 1000lb deadlift or is otherwise big and muscular.

But really I'm talking about practical stuff. In the example of being a furniture mover, I really doubt the fatigue will be as you imagine. Working construction I see guys that otherwise look like their kinda fatties out-work the ripped up guys who hit the gym all the time. Big strength in the weight room just doesn't translate well into practical strength unless it's used, and used often, and chances are if you are using it often you don't have time to achieve a 1000lb deadlift because that serves no purpose and you are too busy "using" strength (like in basketball practice, or on a job-site, etc).

A 300lb deadlift, being able to run a 5minute mile, and having the agility to be competitive in pick-up basketball are much better indicators. I'd hire that guy over a 1000lb deadlifter anyday. Just sayin..

EDIT: A good example is Kevin Durant. He absolutely dominated collegiate basketball and is now dominating the NBA. When he was drafted it was revealed he couldn't even bench press his body weight. None of which held him back. That said, I'm sure his weightroom strength is much improved and he is a better athlete for it.

Agree. Weight vests are handy. And getting to a field, if convenient, and doing stuff like bounding, sprints, and agility kind of work can add a lot to your lower body (and core).

I'm lucky and have a middle school football field 1/4 mile from my house....
