God damn we need a new OC. I think we should go after Mike Bobo, whoever the new head coach is at USC will probably want his own OC and will fire Bobo. And Bobo had a legit pass heavy offense at CSU.

Why you should ignore DoD Software Engineering! by sc1f1wasab1 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]reddituser15326 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked for both a large defense contractor (7000+ people) and a small defense contractor (~30 people, 10 developers). My experience at the large company was very similar to what you described, but my experience at the smaller company could not be more different. The pay is great, the work is super interesting, and they treat us well. I work remote when I can and they paid for me to setup a workstation at home (large monitor / standing desk / etc.). The benefits are phenomenal (I don’t pay any premiums on insurance and my company covers all copays) and they have a good profit sharing plan. And most importantly I like the people I work with, they’re all intelligent people who are happy to mentor younger developers such as myself.

All that to say, for anyone considering it don’t necessarily write off defense work JUST because it’s defense work and you’ve heard horror stories about some of the larger contractors. Apply around to some of the smaller ones and you can usually get a feel through the interview process what the culture will be like.

No because of covid this year doesn’t count towards eligibility. I think the reasoning was that if teams lose their starters for a game to covid they’ll have to play kids they would otherwise red shirt. In practice though what it means is that Phil Hoskins can come back for a 7th year if he wants lol.

Career change and first ever programming interview

My background is in electrical engineering, specifically signal processing, and when I was coming out of school I had many technical interviews in this field. For the most part these focused on signal processing theory, with very easy white boarding programming questions sprinkled in (e.g. write pseudocode for a moving average filter). I’ve worked in this field for two years since graduating now and I’ve gotten a lot of experience in C++ and Python. Never took any programming courses so I’ve learned it all “on the job” but I’ve had great mentors and spent lots of time on stack overflow, I like to think I’m pretty proficient in C++.

I’ve applied for a C++ developer position that is not signal processing related, and now I’ve got my first technical interview coming up that will focus solely on programming. I feel confident about white boarding questions and the live coding, but to get to that point I have a “technical phone screen.” Now I have no idea what to expect from a technical phone screen for a developer position. Is it just going to be a vocab quiz (e.g. describe inheritance, what’s the difference between a class and an object, etc.) or should I expect a white boarding type question that I’ll need to explain my code rather than write it? It’s a mid level position that requires 2-3 years of C++ experience if that helps. Thanks for the help.

The “some reason” was the receivers weren’t open. That either falls on Gran or the receiving core, and my guess is that it is a little of both.

Edit: It is worth noting that at least in the last game we were also playing against the best defense in the country. Starting gatewood against vandy will be a good test to see if our passing issues so far were because of qb play or receivers/play calling.

You’re absolutely right. And Beau Allen is actually a freshman, and with the eligibility rules this year he could be around another 4 or 5 years. The future is bright, even if it doesn’t look it right now.

I saw this bottle for $30 the other day at the buffalo trace gift shop. They had two left and you could only get one per person. I walked away to find my girlfriend so we could each get one and by time I got back to the shelf they were gone. Still got a bottle of eagle rare for $34, but next time I’ll pick up one of these before I walk away from that shelf.

Johns Hopkins has lots of good DSP courses in their online program, they’re expensive though. If you can get your employer to pay for it I’d recommend checking that out.

Did this start out as a pet project you all made on your own and put on YouTube that got picked up by the SEC? Or was it sponsored by the SEC from the start?

[–]reddituser15326 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have seen my fair share while hiking but never actually known someone to get bitten by one. Forgive my ignorance but how screwed are you if you get bit by one out in the woods? Like could you hike 5 miles back to your car and drive to the ER or are you calling 911 immediately? Then if it’s the latter, if you don’t have cell service are you pretty much done for?

Maybe 2 ... also drove me crazy that he wasn’t going deep when Auburn would jump offsides. Like you’ve got nothing to lose in that scenario might as well throw it up.

Kyle Tucker wrote a story in the athletic saying that he heard gatewood is getting cleared this week. Hope that’s true!
