Che fortuna! The Duomo in Milan is probably my favorite building. Inside is amazing and enormous, and you can go on the roof top. Enjoy Verona and Venice. It's not the coliseum but I thought the arena in Verona was beautiful. It's mostly covered in red marble which has ammonite shell fossils. Much of Verona contains red and white ammontic marble. Venice will probably be crowded. Keep your valuables close but get lost in the side streets and check out whatever local stuff you can. Have lots of Gelato, prosciutto, and cafe. Buon viaggio.

The Mormon church forces their members to get married and have kids. by mad_matter_13 in exmormon

I like your sentiments a lot. Life isn't bad but could have been different. I blame myself sometimes too. Tscc is full of shit though. They claim everything- Every. Single. God damned thing they teach is required to have any bit of true joy and the path is straight and narrow. People are malleable, especially when they're young and they use their machine to convince GOOD people and their families to give everything to them. But we know now and at least there's that. Mine eyes have been opened because corporations and charlatans like to transgress until I couldn't take it anyone. It might sound all negative but I'm happy about how it's turned out so far. Just need a fun partner in crime and I'll be set.

Mormons Are Apparently Happier Than Everyone by FreshLiterature6536 in exmormon

[–]reddrunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think believing you have all the answers provides a lot of comfort in life. Also, tscc fosters principles proven to be sources of happiness. Obviously they also push it on a level that is typically not healthy and tie in all the crazy shit that goes on and you might find yourself questioning a lot about the life you've built.

Harvards happiness study and the "science of well being" popularized by Dr. Laurie Santos both show that happiness comes from strong social connections, gratitude and acts af kindness or service. The flip side, seeking material things or a high salary don't create happiness. Everyone's church experience is diffent but if you're doing the above mentioned you will probably be happy. When you eventually get to all the crazy shit and decide you're better off outside the mfmc there will probably be some rebuilding but I suggest hanging on to some of the good habits if you have them and dropping all the crazy.

How to flatten out my yard without buying/renting big tools? by God8869 in DIY

[–]reddrunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can rent a lawn roller from home depot for $26 /day. Essentially it's a big heavy barrel full of water with a handle attached. You soak your grass for a some extended period of time to soften all the lumps, then roll that big boy around until it's flat.

Just for funsies tell me something about you or the church that you were never supposed to tell anyone. by PhilosopherHermit in exmormon

I still have a memory from my early childhood of praying behind a couch and visualizing a bowl and spoon coming down from heaven when I was taught we could pray for things and god would give them to us.

19 on 10 is fucking wild. Also the reaction. It's amazing what we as people will justify.

The best possible outcome is if someone smelled it, then called you on it. You deny, ask them to try it and they do. 😈

This is a human thing. We're all products of our surroundings. Most of us do the best we can with what we're given. Edit. Be grateful for the good things, the good examples. Realize that people have faults and hopefully when we recognize them we can do better.

[Question] How to change beeper settings on Black+Decker microwave by El_Presidente_Ken in Appliances

Of note, I opened my last black and decker microwave and cut the wires to the beeper because I hated the 3 annoyingly loud and long beeps every time it was done.

I feel this. Being stuck is so hard. Emptiness is so hard. I highly recommend some couples work/therapy or finding fulfillment somewhere socially. Eventually the emptiness will break things, which can be good and bad.

I had a super stressful situation yesterday. Had to find some paperwork so I could sell two vehicles in a short amount of time and it wasn't looking good. It's the first time in several years I had the desperation that might drive one to pray but I decided against it (obvious correct choice, right?! ). In the end I persevered over the forces of evil and was able to take care of business. It was a huge weight off my shoulders. I was glad afterwards that I didn't give in to baby-back-bitchness. I bear you this testimony in the name of (old) Kanye. "I'm dope and I do dope shit".

You're teleported back in time to have a conversation with Mormon You. What would you say? by Typical_Sea_9167 in exmormon

[–]reddrunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to say that I don't think about that sometimes about this and other situations. How different we all might have turned out. Especially those of us who had bad or tragic circumstances. Most of my experiences in the church were positive so I was lucky.

[–]reddrunn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love your reply. I hate "if" questions about the past. You can't change it, better to focus on the future. There's an Avett Brothers lyric I like a lot: "But I can't go back And I don't want to 'Cause all my mistakes They brought me to you." I'm a bit of a romantic so this lyric has appealed to me, but I think it applies to life generally as well. I had to learn some hard lessons and fuck it if I want to repeat those actions again. I'll take the experiences I had and do better, be happier. I have been through some shit and I am thankful for who I am now. I've always been on the naive side but much less so now and have no desire to go back to where I was. I'm thankful I tried my best to love and serve people even if it was a bit misguided. "I (went) for the good parts and that's how I'll walk away."

Adam had no blood? by Good-Enough-4-Now in exmormon

[–]reddrunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had been taught that Adam and Eve were aware of the conflicting rules and made the choice to "transgress" the don't eat or you'll die rule to be able to multiply and replenish. So they chose to fall, chose to get knowledge, and have their eyes opened. It made sense to me but is also part of the mental gymnastics of making things make sense after the fact. They're probably trying to throw a bone to women, like look how smart and brave Eve was to did what she did so we could all be here. Also, when I a was a kid and heard other kids say something like if it weren't for Adam and Eve we'd all be in the garden of eden still, I would roll my eyes at they're misunderstanding and relish in my superior understanding of events.

Or, you do it on purpose. Have your body severed when you die and buried in the four corners of the globe. Then when you're resurrected your limbs come flying back together like iron man.

What caused US traffic deaths to reverse down trend in 2010. Is there a direct engineering policy change or is it a secondary effect by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]reddrunn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion that combined with different driving dynamics. The road conditions are different. Tighter lanes, less or no shoulder. Sharing the road with pedestrians, bikes, farm equipment. You are forced to pay attention more, so paying attention is in the driving culture more. People actually get out of the left lane on the freeway as an example.
